    1. Re: [SR-NEWBIE] Questions about laptops
    2. Hi! Are you sure you don't have a wireless router? How do you think you connect to the internet? I believe I got a similar message when my wireless router was turned off by accident by a visitor in my home and I didn't know it. All I had to do was turn it back on. With each move backwards, we let the computer be idleand after about three or four hours, attempted to use it. Each movebackwards causes the computer to behave much worse than in present conditionin that not even the IE page will come up. Our System Restore only went backto some date in May, but this problem was not occurring in May.This morning, the laptop error message tells a network cable is unplugged. If that is the case, we don't know where to begin looking for an unpluggednetwork cable as we have never used one. In addition, a network named Flynnpopped up and the message told we are now connected to Flynn so to accessthe internet click on connect. Well! the places that click took us were intothe depths of the computer that we never knew existed! So, we closed thecomputer and are now writing to you.One interesting thing to us: when we sign off _shut down_, a message appearsthat the computer updates will be added and afterwords the computer willclose automatically. That does happen every single time we close the laptop. Also, avast tells us it has been updated. How can that be without internetaccess? Is there any hope/likelihood this computer can be "saved"? The localcomputer shop charges eighty five dollars to put the laptop "on the bench",then seventy five dollars per hour while it runs through its tests. There isthen a charge for the repair. We are wondering if purchase of a new computermight be more prudent?Thank you very much for your time and your help.Rana>>> *********> Visit the threaded archives of this list:> http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/SENIOR-NEWBIE> *********>> -------------------------------> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to> [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the> quotes in the subject and the body of the message> *********Visit the threaded archives of this list: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/SENIOR-NEWBIE*********-------------------------------To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Were it not for this list and these amazingly knowledgeable folks who are willing to share that knowledge, we would still be using typewriters. I have no idea how to determine whether our router is wireless nor how to turn it on/off. Our son-in-law set up the computer and said enjoy! A friend gave us his used laptop and said now go surf the web rather than watch TV!! Thank you for writing and taking your time to offer suggestions for help.
