Hello Joe, Tuesday, November 16, 2010, 8:47:57 AM, you wrote: JT> When I hover over it it says 'Safely remove Hardware' and when I JT> left click on it I get a box that says 'Safely remove Mass Storage JT> Device - Drive (F:)' I do have an external F drive ......... why JT> would I have this icon? Whenever a removable drive is plugged into Windows ( or any other OS for that matter ) it's important to be sure that the computer has finished writing to the drive before it's unplugged. The reason for that 'Safely Remove' icon is for the system to check before you unplug that it really is safe to remove. If you never unplug the F: drive then just ignore the icon, but if you do have to unplug then use this icon to shut down the F: drive before it's unplugged. BTW - you'll hear people say they never bother with all that fuss and just unplug anyway ... 99 times out of 100 they'll get away with it, but that 1 time they don't it can scramble the data on their external drive so next time it's plugged in they'll find that the contents cannot be read any more. For the sake of an extra mouse click or two it's not worth the risk IMHO <lol> -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected] MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 10.04 'Lucid' 64bit
Thanks Barry ......... I am so glad you told me that as it has had me mystified for a long time. I cant remember being told what it was about when I installed the F Drive .... I suppose some info was provided but the interest in setting up an external drive over rode all else ........ so not only *read* the instructions but *remember* them as well. Thanks again ........ I shall ignore the icon.
