Java is part of how web sites are displayed and without it you'd not get the web site to work correctly. So yes you do need Java but the user only needs part of it - there's no need to install the whole of Java which allows you to create Java sites. So what the end user gets is the Java Runtime Environment which is just enough to allow web pages to work but leaves out all the bits related to creating Java fancy bits. It's probably the Java update manager that's requesting permission to go check for updates and/or install them. Updates are needed as they fix security issues ( in the same way that Windows Updates do ) and also add new functionality. R> Do I need changes to our computer that frequently, once or twice R> daily? Do I need Java? It will keep nagging until you let it do its job so let it through and you'll not be bugged by it until the next update is released. These vary in frequency so you might get a couple in a week then nothing for a couple of months. BTW - the same applies to Flash. It's part of web sites and without it you don't get the whole web site working as it was designed to work. -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected] MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 10.04 'Lucid' 64bit

Barry, as usual, you have come to our rescue with instructions/explanations and terminology that we can understand. We are grateful and appreciative of your time and help.
