Hiiiiii Barry. I reinstalled avg....I have it on another pc and had no problem with it and to tell the truth I kept forgetting how to take scans on avast. There are so many things I have to do to clean up the pc that the easier it is for me the happier I am. Sometimes the only way to remove an errant program is with the special tool provided by the vendor ( if they make such a thing, not many do ) and that would have been my next suggestion but you've beaten me to it so well done <lol> FWIW I think the new version of Avast is a big improvement over the old one so if you found it OK you could always try that out.
