Rana, It appears that Courtney has nailed the problem. It seems you have downloaded Gmail's thumbnail of the letter image, rather than downloaded the actual file. I experimented and did a "save" on the thumbnail and wound up with a little 6KB file, rather than the actual 254KB file. Courtney provides the correct download procedure. Rana, An indication of how much resolution is in the picture is the file size. If the sent image is below 20K, no amount of upsizing the image will produce a legible picture. It will just upsize a blocky looking image. If the image is around 70K in file size, there is some hope for using the file. It appears to me that the sender has reduced the file size to the point of unusability. The sender needs to send the file at its largest practical size (200K to 3 megs) and let your printer do the work of reducing to fit the sheet of paper. Sorry, I should have sent the link. Yes, it's a very nice little free program. http://www.irfanview.com/ ----- Original Message ----- Thanks for taking time to reply. I don't know anything about the irfanview program. Is it a free-type download? I will see if I can find it on google. I appreciate the help/suggestion. Rana
Right click on the file, and choose "Open With" Pick Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" from the list Once it is open in there, you can roll your mouse wheel, or use the magnifying glass at the bottom to make it bigger But if it's really that small, it will probably blur so much it won't be readable. So either she sent it small, or you need to go to gmail again and open the message, then click to download it again. Maybe this has already come up, but I haven't seen it. You know how sometimes the URL is so long, it is hard to copy and paste it to a new webpage? There are probably other sites to do it at, but someone sent me this one, which let's you put in a long URL and get a tiny one back, which takes you to the site: http://tinyurl.com/create.php Here's a sample -- http://tinyurl.com/dj9a2z is the same as this Avery one below: http://www.avery.com/avery/en_us/Search/_/?dimsearch=false&N=0&Ntk=SoftwareAndTemplate&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=0&Nr=AND%28SITESCHANNELS%3AAvery.com%2COR%28ContentType%3AAVERY-SOFTWARE%2CAND%28ContentType%3AAVERY-TEMPLATE%29%29%29&Ns=Rank%7C0&Ntt=5351&x=17&y=9 If anyone knows if this is not a good thing to do (Allow Access) please tell us! Someone wrote me to ask a couple of questions, so I am putting it out here for all in case others "Labels for Dummies" like me! are wondering. The Avery website is: http://www.avery.com/avery/en_us/ (and if you don't know a website, the first thing I do is just put the name and then "dot com"; so for this one, I put www.avery.com, and it brings it up and changes it to the above one. If that doesn't work, just go to www.google.com and type in the name + site; so for this one, Avery + site will also bring it up as the first choice in the search results.) Once at the Avery site, choose the blue tab that says "Templates and Software" and click on Templates when the choices drop down. At the lefthand side is a box under Quick Links (yellow) that says "product# or Keyword". I used this because I already had a box of Avery labels, 5351, and had the product number on the box, so I put that number in and pressed the arrow, which brought me to: http://tinyurl.com/dj9a2z (the actual address is much longer than this, this is a short version -- see my next letter for how to do this--I'm onna roll!). The first one that comes up shows a sheet with 3 columns of 11, Copier Address Label, 33 per sheet that's the one I have. Off to the right it says "Download" -- click there and a template pops up that lets you type there (if you have popup blockers like I do, it will make you "temporarily allow popups from this site" and then you have to hit the Download button again). And then the Next page made me allow it to download, too, the page that says "Downloading........." at the top. You might have to click that start button in the body of the message. Hit SAVE if you want to be able to use it again, or add to it later. You don't want to go through all of that work only to have it disappear into cyberspace. Then you just type your addresses in each square. Use your Enter button to go to each line; use your TAB to go to the next square, even if it is at the end of a row. When you are done, go to File at the top, choose Save As and give it a name like "Labels - Christmas" and that's what you will look for when you want it next. You'll go to FILE, Open, then find the Ls and pick that one. (Actually, on my computer, I try to SAVE almost right away, because my computer has a nasty habit of shutting things down unexpectedly, so Save early and often, as you work your way through--you can hit Save at any time so you don't lose your work.) Glitches -- on my machine, at least, in the first box on the left in each row, all the way down, I had to move each line of the address over 4 spaces, because otherwise it wouldn't show all of the typing. When I tried to print it, my machine would say something like, "Print is outside the boundaries, do you want to print anyway?" and I would say yes -- sometimes you get it, sometimes you don't. I can't remember if, once I moved them over, that happened or not. (Why have a template, you may ask? And that's what I asked too, but this was an easy solution for me). Also, the last two boxes did not print, and it threw them to the next page, I think. You could try doing it using my product # 5351, just your own address as a return address, copy it by highlighting it and putting it in another box, etc. Do that for a couple of lines, print it out on a plain piece of paper and see what it looks like. If it's good, go out and buy the labels you want, (if you don't get Avery, the other companies probably have templates too, but if you want a "for sure" thing, get the Avery brand one you like, because you Know that will have a template. They have different sizes and purposes. Mine were actually for a copy machine, but they worked on my printer. In my next installment I will tell you how I did the Tiny URL. Nancy -- feeling very smug ..........
WELL! I finally printed some labels! Here I sit with my house falling apart around me doing Xmas labels! A week or so ago there was an article in the paper about how templates were so great to use, and that Microsoft had a lot of new ones, so I decided to take a look. Sure enough, there is one for labels, and a wizard to make it all work. You can type the labels right there with the wizard; or you can get them from your address book, but I decided it was easier to type them there than in the AB. However, the labels I had on hand were years and years old, and the Avery number was not an option at Microsoft, so I went to the Avery site to see if it was still in use, or if I could figure out which number was compatible. Lo, there was a template at Avery using my label number, so I gave that one a try. Worked like a charm, except the left hand column lost the first letter in each row when printed out. I called Avery, he taught me how to transfer the whole template with my info from their site (the browser I was using) to my Word (very clever -- hold down CONTROL and letter A, which highlights it all; then CONTROL and letter C, which pops something up you ignore; go to your Microsoft Word and open a new document, R click and choose PASTE and voila! there it is.) However it didn't print out correctly from there either, so I just moved them all over in the lefthand column. Hope this helps someone -- now I am set for Christmas!! Top that, Martha. Nancy

Would appreciate any advice/help on these issues. I have XP home edition service pack 2 and use Norton AntiVirus and Internet Explorer. 1. on the tool bar sometimes I get "done with errors on page and a yellow triangle with an ! mark inside. 2. when I go off the web I get the message "Instruction at " 0x7e340f4c" reference memory at 0x00aa 38d0, the memory could not be "read" click on OK to terminate the problem." 3. sometimes I get this pop-up message; "Microsoft Internet Explorer Warning your computer contains various signs of viruses and malware, problems presence. Your system requires immediate anti virus check ! anti virus will perform quick check free ...etc." at times I have to shut my computer down to get rid of the messages that pops up. I have run a full scan with Norton and had just Internet Explorer scanned and Norton doesn't come up with anything. Thanks for any suggestions. What happens when they get to this 'half download' point - do you get any errors or does the download just disappear ? Can you download anything else ?? If you can, and it's only security based programs that are killed then that's often a sign you have a virus active on your system that is detecting the download - some of them can be that sneaky !! Also, if you are infected to that sort of level then running a virus scan with whatever is installed on your PC will often show no infection as the virus is smart enough to suppress the output but still allow the scan. Now, if you cannot download *anything* - i.e. a game or some other non security related program then there's something else at work and this can be an over-zealous AV program of your own so what do you use ?? -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 4.0 Home Edition Premium
