    1. [SR-NEWBIE] reply - AVG 7.5 Free anti-virus program finished?
    2. Pete, I am probably just plain dumb about anything related to the computer despite the fact that I am not a newbie. I find that Ccleaner is the easiest to use, and there is nothing intricate about setup. I use it every night before signing off. Quick and easy if you don't mess with the registry; from what i have read, even some of the more experienced people don't bother with Ccleaner's registry. 2. It has been gently pointed-out to me that my last letter referred to a Win98SE operating system, whereas my earlier inquiry was regarding WinME. WinME is the correct OS. My "main" computer uses Win98SE (and I'm seriously thinking about "upgrading" the WinME on the problem computer to Win98SE). Sorry for the confusion. I understand that there are few differences between these two operating systems, however. 1. Re: [SR-NEWBIE] AVG 7.5 Free anti-virus program finished?
    2. Dear all, Sorry to keep beating this dead horse, but I appear to be still having troubles with Avast. I have removed the three AVG programs, apparently remaining on my hard drive, from the startup menu (via msconfig) so I get no icons or indications that AVG is still active. But during the first Avast update, I received a red popup: "An error has occurred while attempting to update. Click here for more information." So I did, and received this: "Information about current update: Last encountered error: Not enough storage is available to process this command. Total time: 17:49". I'm not sure what sort of "storage" they mean, but my 9 GB hard drive has 5 GB of free space. If they mean RAM, I have at least 128 MB (I may have added more later, but forget how to find out the number [gr]). And now, after a week of failed daily updates, Avast got "fed up" and told me my database was out of date, and started a download of about 3.6 MB. It got to about 3.0, and then I got another "not enough storage" error message. I wonder if these storage errors are an indication that AVG is still intruding into Avast's operation? I tried Barry's Microsoft Cleanup site, but I didn't see where it would apply to Win98SE and, besides, it froze my computer when I tried to get away from it..... and I had to shut down and reboot. I have RegCure on my hard drive and used that. But it's only the free version, and doesn't seem to include uninstall problems in this version. Cora suggested Revo Installer, but it won't work with Win98. She and Jayne also mentioned CCleaner, which will work, but I haven't jumped into the water on that one, yet. I often get into trouble with broad-brush programs, as I'm usually looking for a specific solution while the program wants to play-around with everything..............and I often have difficulties wading-through all of the options. 1. Re: [SR-NEWBIE] Convert audio of dvd to cd possibility
    2. Sandy, If you are fortunate enough to have a cassette player in your car, you're in luck insofar as MP3. There are cheap small MP3 players that hold hours and hours of audio. You can buy a small but frustrating FM transmitter that picks up static and transmit through your car radio, or if you have that cassette player in your car you can plug a cassette adapter into your MP3 player and be static free. What a cassette adapter looks like: http://www.buy.com/retail/usersearchresults.asp?querytype=home&qu=cassette+a dapter&qxt=home&display=col Some recent cars have a little plug on the radio so that MP3 players can be connected directly. If you have one of those, you're really in luck. Better yet, a few cars' CD players will play MP3s, and one can bypass the little external MP3 players entirely. A few Mercury cars have that feature. My Merc doesn't. If you go the FM transmitter route, place the FM transmitter in the back window of your car, because that's where most car radio antennas are nowadays, and you pick up less static with the transmitter so close to the antenna. The way you load MP3 lectures, music, and other audio onto your MP3 player is through the USB connection. Your computer recognizes the MP3 player as sort of an external drive, or thumb drive. Make sure the player is of the type that appears to a computer to be an external drive. There are some MP3 players that don't appear that way, and have some weird music software to run it. I've never figured them out, and had to find a method to convert the player to appear as a "normal" MP3 player. Here's an example of the one I use -- (refurbished for lower price): http://www.buy.com/prod/sandisk-sansa-e250-2gb-mp3-player-fm-tuner-fm-on-the -fly-recording/q/loc/111/205562657.html and some spare recharging connectors that use house plugs or car receptacles are nice to go with it. Otherwise the player recharges through the computer's USB connection. http://www.buy.com/prod/belkin-charging-kit-for-sansa-digital-player-data-ca ble-with-car-ac/q/loc/111/204413115.html Woody ========================== BKWORM26@aol.com writes: I would like to listen to some lectures I have on dvd to a cd so I can listen to them in my car. The biggest problem is that a DVD has a different way of encoding audio so what you'll need is a tool to rip the audio from the DVD. There are many such tools around but the biggest pitfall is that there are also plenty of rogue ones that do more than they should, i.e. install spyware or viruses ( especially the free ones ) so you have to be very careful which one you get !! The free program here http://www.dvd-mp3.org/ will do the job but only converts to MP3 - not to worry as the process of creating an audio CD next will take care of that automatically :-) Next you need to create an audio CD and you'll probably have a program on your PC already to do this, but if not then Deep Burner Free is a good one to get http://www.deepburner.com/?r=download You will have to learn how to use the above programs of course but neither are overly complicated. The main thing to remember is to save the extracted audio to a location you can find easily when you come to creating the audio CD. Just a couple more things, expect to make a few mistakes and create some bad CD's at first, it's normal and luckily audio CD's are pretty cheap now. Also don't use re-writable CD's ( CD-RW ) as many audio players won't handle them, use CD-R instead. There are paid programs that can do all this in one step, but they aren't cheap and are also complex to learn. Unless you are going to be doing it a lot then the outlay and learning curve is probably too high - might as well get a portable DVD player and plug it into the car stereo, just don't watch it whilst driving !! -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 4.0 Home Edition Premium

    1. [SR-NEWBIE] IE 8 downloaded but browser window won't stay open on monitor
    2. Mrs. G. Lockwood
    3. Greetings everyone,   I am writing to you from our local library because my PC is having a problem.   I have an HP/Compaq SR1850NX desktop with Windows XP Media SP2. Although SP3 is available, it wouldn't load due to a conflict with the AMD64. And, although there was a downloadable fix for that, I didn't get the fix downloaded.   I use Yahoo for e-mail.  For quite a while, Yahoo has been recommending an update to my browser to Internet Explorer 8.  On April 28th, I received a notification from Windows Update to download Internet Explorer 8 which I did from Microsoft's downloads website ... but ... after I installed the download, I had a problem.   When I attempted to connect to the Internet, the IE window flashed quickly on the screen and then flashed off the screen.  Even though I am actively connected to the Internet, the IE window will not stay active on the screen --- therefore --- I cannot use the brower to get to Yahoo (etc.).   I hope that one of you understands what I am trying to describe and has an idea as to the root of the problem and/or can suggest a fix for it.   I use Norman Antivirus, Norman Ad-Aware, Norman Ad-Watch and have run all scans and there isn't anything found.   I use TimeWarner RoadRunner broadband cable and a router.  The router serves as a firewall because I don't use wireless.  I also have the free ZoneAlarm for controlling application software access permission to the Internet.   Thanks in advance for your consideration of my problem and any help you can offer.  In the meantime, have a great day.   Carol

Sounds like either a video driver issue or a monitor fault, the only real way to tell is to use the monitor on a known good PC ( take it round to a friend's house and try it on their system ). If it works OK on theirs then try getting the latest video card drivers for your PC, if it has the same problem on a different PC then the monitor itself has developed a fault. -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 4.0 Home Edition Premium

    3. Fellow Senior-Newbies, I'm having a new experience with the font on my monitor. The letters are three different colors, red, green and/or black, and only certain letters appear this way. It appears on some portions of web pages and seems to slowly appear as a new page is loaded. Is my monitor going or is it something else? Has anyone else had this problem? I haven't been able to find anything on Google like this yet. I have a HANNS.G....HDS - HC194D monitor. I am running Win XP-HP-SP 3 on a Dell Dimension E 310. This system will be 3 years old in Sept. I am far from having much computer savy. Anyone have any ideas before I seek a tech? Thanks, Faye C. Texas

Usually the way to fix a program that won't un-install is to re-install it and then remove immediately, however this would conflict with your Avast so you'd need to remove that too and put back when you sorted AVG out. A lot of hassle and as long as there's nothing still active from AVG you can ignore what's been left behind. There is the Windows Cleanup Utility which can sometimes remove left over bits of programs that fail to remove properly. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 According to the description on this page the program works all the way back to Win95 so should be OK for you to try - it'll soon tell you if it's now not compatible with anything prior to Win2000 !! -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 4.0 Home Edition Premium

    3. I've used Avast for several years and have never had a problem. It just spins along in the tray on the bottom of my monitor. I also have CCleaner which I try to remember to use daily to knock out any temporary files, history and other 'schtuff' that's just taking up space on the pc. To get rid of other AVG files you could maybe do an online search for some tips on that if someone isn't able to help you here. It's not unusual to have files hang around on a drive long after you thought you uninstalled a program. I had that happen with Symantec when I had it a few years ago....annoyed the heck out of me until somebody said, 'go here...look for this...hit delete'. The 61 MB download would take hours on my dialup and, as unreliable as the connection is, it's unlikely I could ever get it to work.
