The entries are alphabetized within each section and I would like to merge them all together into one large alphabetized file. Thanks for any suggestions. Hi Barbra, You have the capabilities without a program to accomplish this. 1. highlight the info on the page you want to copy. I am assuming it is in a table format. 2. copy and paste it into a blank doc. save it as a text file. On aol I can get one from file, new doc 3. Open your spreadsheet. I used excel 2003- Paste it in. Excel offered to put it back in columns and I let it. Then it went into the spreadsheet after a couple of clicks. 4. do this for each page you have. Don't be surprised if you have to alter the width of some cells to accommodate different page construction. 5. Add one column and number to it so you can put the file back in its place if you should want to see which page a name appeared on. Probably a good idea to number them with a letter and a number. Not sure if you will need 2 columns for it or not -your choice. 6. when complete. Sort all according to your criteria. Let me know if it works for you. Fran

All depends on how these lists are organized on the web site and if they are separate pages for each section then creating a master list with every entry will mean taking the data from each section and merging into one - how easy or hard this is again depends on how the original lists were created. -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 4.0 Home Edition Premium

    1. Re: [SR-NEWBIE] Alphabetzing program?
    2. Barbra, I tried the "List Alphabetizer" free program, and it's not what you want. It requires the list be populated line by line, and lists cannot be input into the program, meaning you'd have to start from scratch with the lists, and there would be no columns for name, birth, death, etc. It's no good for sorting cemetery web pages, as the pages would require columns as well as rows. I tried copying and pasting cemetery lists from web pages into Excel, and the cells were scrambled after import. I don't know what the web pages look like that you're working with. You may be able to import them into a Word or Open Office table and retain formatting, and then sort on the desired column. In any case, your lists on cemetery pages should be created and maintained on a Word or Open Office table, or Excel or Access table, and you can immediately sort them after entry of new records, and then copy the table over onto your web page for uploading. IF all of the lists are on current web pages or data files, and all tables are uniform in number of columns across a row, you can easily paste them into MS Word as tables. You can easily cause each pasted table to merge into one single table,.and then sort on the desired column. Open Office is free and is as good as MS Office which includes MS Word. Woody ========================= WoodyWoodworth@aol.com writes: Barbra, Googling on the word Alphabetizer provides a result of one free program that looks like it will do a good job; howvever, some users report it includes adware and some don't. That program can be loaded from Tucows http://www.tucows.com/preview/420798 or from CNET http://download.cnet.com/List-Alphabetizer/3000-2056_4-10451219.html To alphabetize lists, I usually do a "select all" in the list, paste it in MS Word, enter a special symbol to show ends of lines, convert the list to a table, and then sort. I paste the sorted list into Notepad to remove the MS Word hidden junk, and then paste the result into a web page. After you do your list sort with the free software, you might paste the result into Notepad to ensure the list is free of hidden junk that might make your web page behave in an unpredictable manner. 3. Hi, Barry, Thank you so very much. I can still get (and send) email but all my 'input mail' prior to May 21 has totally disappeared. I have tried looking for it in the deleted file but it is not there. I had been saving a few to answer or print out (lesson learned here). Plus a family member had sent some photos (via Snapfish) which I had not yet downloaded to my computer and I really wanted to keep them. I am in the process of reading the Input repair tool kit - my son is due to visit on Memorial Day and I will get him to help me. Again, many, many thanks for sharing you knowledge. 2. Just wanted to throw in a comment about WinME. I bought WinME when it first came out, and it would be a great program for about 6 months, and then deteriorate until I had to reformat and reinstall everything. Even my shop man did the same with Win98 and WinME. I finally became very proficient at a backing up, reformatting and reinstalling, taking great pride in how fast I did it, just like the father in the movie "Christmas Story" in changing flat tires on his cars. Since I've had WinXP, it's been a whole new world insofar as stability. I've had XP since ???... well for several years now and I've only had to reformat and reinstall once. Woody ==================== PeteScherm@aol.com writes: It has been gently pointed-out to me that my last letter referred to a Win98SE operating system, whereas my earlier inquiry was regarding WinME. WinME is the correct OS. My "main" computer uses Win98SE (and I'm seriously thinking about "upgrading" the WinME on the problem computer to Win98SE). Sorry for the confusion. I understand that there are few differences between these two operating systems, however. Pete **************Recession-proof vacation ideas. Thanks again Woody.
