Barry, thank you for the advice! Questions (you knew you wouldn't get off scott free, didn't you? :) 1. When you say "erase Windows and start again from scratch", does this affect anything else? Do I have to backup all my files, documents, anything? 2. Louise suggested turning off the Systems Restore and then rebooting--does that work, should I do that also? (BTW, does this list have a webpage with all of these things that probably drive you nuts repeating are located? I thought there was, but darned if I can find where I stashed that info). McAfee told my husband that this trojan would only be acquired by clicking on something and allowing a registry change. However, the only things that I can think of that were out of the ordinary were that I tried www.bing.com (microsoft's search); www.pandora.com (a music /radio site, which I believe is very popular--anyone know if this is bad? I couldn't find anything bad about it on the net, but I do recall something that seemed to be downloading as soon as I went there???); and I got one of those emails that said, "click here for pictures of me" -- I did Not click on anything, I did not open the letter, but I did click on it in the preview screen, which according to the McAfee guy would not be enough to set it off. We use McAfee virus scan and firewall; Spybot; and the Microsoft security stuff is also installed. Not so good? Thanks for your help! Nancy
I say again... There is a cleaner for this called gmer.exe. You can read about it, see what to expect and download it from here. Give it a try. Let us know if it cleaned it. PLEASE. http://www.gmer.net/#faq Scroll just a bit down to the Download EXE button. My computer was acting up, so hubby did all the scans and it found a trojan virus in two files. It is: Generic RootKit.f!rootkit The two files are: C:\windows\system32\drivers\e1776fcb.sys and SSDT-HOOK They have been quarantined, but not removed, and each time we reboot, we have to quarantine them again after going through all of the scans. My husband talked a McAfee guy who says it must be removed by a professional. Does anyone know of a way to this on our own, or is this true that we have to hire someone? Nancy

Your screen resolution is set below our minimum recommendation. When it's set under 1024 x 768 pixels, the all-new Yahoo! Mail won't look as good. You can continue with your current settings, but you won't be able to enjoy the full effect. When I click to my Yahoo mail, this(above message) appears. I have no idea how to do this. Can anyone help? It pops up every time and I just don't know what to do

Thanks to those out there for your information re above, I have found it will transfer perfectly direct from the camcorder to the TV, no shudder, so I am in busines. Thanks again. Ron C. West Oz
I hope my subject line adequately expresses my problem. When I am on a web site, any web site, and there is posted an email address for further information; to order an item, etc., I am immediately sent to gmail. The gmail site I am referred to has no address on it, just the normal log-in information. How do I get back to the place I used to be whereby I could click on the web page's posted email address and arrive at the sought destination? I use Mozilla most of the time with IE tabs; rarely do I use IE excepting the tabs on Mozilla. I use those tabs only because some research sites require IE. Windows XPpro. SP2 I sincerely hope some knowledgeable person will be able to help with this problem. TIA Rana
G'Day Ron I'm certainly no expert in this matter, but I too have had the same problem with home movies my son gave me mainly with .AVI extensions. (I see you live in Australia) I get the pcuser magazine where Darren Yates wrote an excellent piece of software PCUser DVD HD 2009 that converts all these movie into movies usable on the DVD player. I spent many hours converting all my movies successfully. That until until my son told me to go out and buy the cheapest DVD player I could find out of China and it will play all the movies he gave me. I went to Tandies\Dick Smiths & got a PALSONIC DVD2040 for $52 & bingo no more converting movies, I don't no how long this DVD play will last but it dose come with a years warranty so what the heck. All DVD players are not created equal, especially if it's an older one. We have 3 of them, two will play .jpg pictures, one will not. But it will pay a disk that has a .dvd file on it. Check the owners manual to see what it will play (sometimes it's shown on the front of the DVD player also) So it depends on what format the files on the disk are in. For instance, we have a back up disk that just has the actual .jpg files on it. That will play on two of our DVD machines. The other one won't play pictures unless the pictures were made into a slide show type of thing, meaning a xxx.dvd file on the disk What program are you using to make them ? Hello Bette, Friday, May 29, 2009, 3:14:58 PM, you wrote: B> I manage to transfer photographs to the discs and I can play them B> on my computer BUT they will not play on my DVD Recorder/TV. You have to record in a format that the TV will understand and that means reading the manual for the TV to find out what it will accept. Also some TV drives will not work well with some makes of DVD disc, and the old 'dust on the lens' issue can prevent it from reading a home recorded DVD so it's worth getting a lens cleaner disc and running it on the TV drive. -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 4.0 Home Edition Premium

Stuttering like this can be due to the PC not having enough 'Oomph' to play movies or a sign that the Hard Drive is badly fragmented so it cannot refill the playback buffer fast enough. Also some Anti-Virus programs can be a bit over-zealous and take too long scanning the movie file as it's been accessed. Turning off real time scanning will verify this but it's not a good idea to leave it off so treat this as only a 'test' to see if that's the issue. Some specifications of your PC might help, i.e. CPU speed, RAM, HD free space etc. I went through the posts from you but apart from picking up that you use WinXP there doesn't seem to be that other information. BTW - when you say playback on the PC have you copied the movie to the PC from the camcorder or does it use a DVD for saving and you are playing from that on the PC ? -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 4.0 Home Edition Premium

Please answer to the list. I would very much like the answer also. I try to send DVDs to my brother (he has no computer but his TV plays DVDs). He cannot play the ones I send him on the TV. Jayne-- I have the CCleaner program but apparently I don't know how to use it. It just looks like a list of things on my computer, most of which I have no idea of what they are. Then I have to delete the ones I THINK may be bad? That is very scary to me. Thanks for any insight in how to use this.
Nancy, Many of us use a free program called CCleaner...works great and I have never, not ever, had a virus, worm or other related problem. In fact, recently at work we had a new 'server' installed and when they were going around to each person's computer setting it up the IT person told me I had the 'cleanest' computer in the company. I looked at him and said one word: "CCleaner". He got a big smile and said - "Smart". Depending on what you are already using, if you haven't had trouble you don't necessarily have to install anything else. But an antivirus program is a must - I use AVAST which is also free and runs in the 'tray' at the bottom of the monitor screen. It is very handy and is working all the time defending my computer from any nastiness out there in cyberspace. Links for both are http://www.ccleaner.com/download (choose the free download route) and also http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html Good luck - and for those in the US....have a safe and good holiday.
