Would someone please give me a step by step on how to archive email messages using Outlook Express. Thank you, Walt in Pennsylvania
For money, I believe Iomega once retrieved data. Whether they still do, I don't know. Check their website. I had an entire backup fail because one of the disks failed. I now use an off line backup (Carbonite) and a 1TB external. Thanks Woody... I tried a couple of disks AND I swapped out my drive for my Dad's and I had the same problem. I only use it to back up one program, but it is critical data. I really like your idea about emailing myself a copy and saving on AOL. I've been looking at external hard drives and guess it's just time to bite the bullet and get one!! This is old technology and surprising that it's worked as well as it has for this long. With the low cost of USB Flash drives these days it's really not worth the hassle of fighting an ailing mechanical drive like this. I'd recommend investing in a USB drive and putting the old faithful Zip Drive out to pasture :-) -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.04 'Jaunty'

Barry- You brought back a very bad and vivid memory from many years ago when I kept false positive alerts of a virus (didn't know they were false at the time and it was very scary--my first encounter with a supposed virus). I was using PC Cillin at the time (now Trend Micro) and I kept getting this alert (their little barking dog warning) that I had the Word Wieder Virus and that it couldn't be repaired. I called the computer shop I was using at the time and they suggested before I did anything else I should notify Trend Micro and ask them about it. They came back saying it was a false positive and told me to download the newest profile which fixed the error--updated virus profiles didn't come through automatically in those days. So I get all upset over nothing--a false positive. Turns that that ANY file on your computer that mentioned GeoCities was coming up as this Word Wieder Virus--irreparable. Huh! that is very interesting.... Though the McAfee tech took control over the computer, asked a bunch of questions and seemingly found them. Anyway, something to think about before I jump next time. Thanks! Nancy In a message dated 7/12/2009 2:04:21 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, barry@yobunny.co.uk writes: It's also possible that the last update to McAfee was bad so the next one sorted it out. Maybe we learned something during our recent trojan problems. Our computer is miraculously fixed!! We had been nervous about some of the fixes that were suggested (and the McAfee guy told us it could only be fixed by a pro, too deeply embedded or something). One of two things apparently happened: 1. A patch or update appeared from McAfee , one of those that made you reboot -- and right after the last virus scans and this update, voila! So if you have a big-time problem and can wait it out for a couple of weeks, you might save a wad of money. Maybe McAfee figured it out and fixed it. 2. A friend-of-a-friend who wrote a book on viruses suggests running your virus scans several times back to back, as he said that sometimes there were enough that the program had to move on and not deal with it the first time around (that's my understanding of what he said, at least). He said you would be amazed at what gets picked up the next time around. We had 4 trojans, 3 quarantined and fixed 1, although they all reappeared with every rebooting. It always showed these 4 and dealt with them the same way (i.e., they didn't disappear one by one with additional scans), so we feel that the update probably fixed the computer for us. Thanks for all of your advice, we have saved it for future reference, but I think that next time we might try the "wait and see" method we stumbled upon first, if we can stand the inconvenience. And maybe checking with McAfee provokes them to find it, if enough people are logging in about it?? Maybe they just find them anyway with their magical powers, I don't know. Nancy

Sometimes may need to use \n instead of $ depending on how the text has been formatted from where you copy from. Have you tried using 2 columns per page or is that even worse? Cora ============= I feel there must be an easier way to do this than what I'm doing. If I copy something from an email, for example, to a MW page, how can I get the words to flow across the page to the margins, rather than me having to make those short lines fit line by line? I have tried doing "Select All" and then resticking it in the margined blank page, but it just sits there again. This is to avoid printing out multiple pages when I just need the print to extend to the margins, saving a lot of wasted space. Nancy
And thanks to you for all the help you give on this list, glad to be able to repay it a bit. I only knew about it because I get a lot of email I want to add to the notes in my Genealogy program, same problem, and I had the same thought as Nancy - "I feel there must be an easier way to do this than what I'm doing" So I took a week figuring out an answer. <lol> I also figured out I love that find and replace, can do so many great things with it! Nancy, That is neat. Never heard of being able to do that. However, I typed in "one space" and the hard return was replaced with the words "one space". I then understood that what was meant was to hit the space bar once, leaving one empty space. Then the "Find and replace" function would replace the hard return with one empty space.
