    2. Barry, I went to the Microsoft page here and ran all the Methods and nothing did any good. I still got all the error messages. I am going to take it in to a shop and see what they say. Any JaD> suggestions on what I can do at this point? Start Firefox in Safe Mode by going to [ Start / All Programs / Firefox ] for the link. When it opens it will ask if you want to disable all add-ons and plugins, this is what you need to do as it will be one or more of these that's causing the problem. When you get a successful start in Safe Mode, close Firefox and start in the normal way. It'll probably be OK and you can add back those plugins again :-) There are some bugs in version 3.5 and many users are finding it to be a little flaky so if you still can't get it to work then remove it and go back to the 3.0.13 version which you can download from .. ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0.13/win32/en-US/Firefox%20Setup%203.0.13.exe -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.04 'Jaunty'

That's why it's necessary to have a fully patched and protected system before anything is copied back - any files that may have been infected will be blocked by the AV program. FWIW it's rare for data files ( documents and pictures ) to be attacked this way and more likely that downloaded programs will be the ones affected if anything so the thing to do is only save data to the DVD, not programs / installers etc. OT> I'm not even game to scan the DVD holding all his data on my Pc in OT> case I get infected too. 1. Re: [SR-NEWBIE] Internet
    2. Dale- YES...most definitely they can. I do it all the time. I'm going to assume you use a wireless router (and, if not, you SHOULD) which is connected by cable between your broadband modem and your computer and your laptop is on a wireless network connected to the router. If you have things set-up properly you can even access a printer connected to your desktop machine from the laptop. The only caution would be...if you are trying to log onto your ISP with the same account from both computers at the same time you may need to do so with two different usernames/screen names. For example, I use Comcast to connect to the Internet via cable modem, and also use my AOL account which I access via TCP/IP connection using my cable connection. I can only log onto AOL with one screen name at a time--if I'm connection to AOL on the desktop machine under my primary screen name and try to log on from the laptop--I'll get kicked off on the desktop. But I can be on with both if I am online under two different screen names. Joan In a message dated 8/19/2009 2:47:12 P.M. Before even thinking of transferring files back to the newly formatted system get it fully up to date and install AV software. It's probably been a case of not keeping up with Windows Updates that's let this one in so when returned make sure he knows to do these whenever the system tells him they are ready to install. -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.04 'Jaunty'

This appears to be a common problem for some programs where there's an older version installed and a later one is loaded over the top. So did you have an older version of MicroSoft Office installed before loading Office 2007 ? If so then I'd recommend removing all versions including this one and then load Office 2007 from scratch. You won't lose any data though if you use Outlook and Outlook 2007 has been installed it would be wise to make a backup of the PST file in case it's not restored. -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.04 'Jaunty'

    2. RickandRana
    3. My son gave me Office '07, telling me I would enjoy its wonderful new features. The product is new, in its case. I am running Windows XPpro SP2. During installation, error 1316 appeared. Error 1316: "a network error occurred, C:\\Windows\installer\Data2.msi setup failed". However, when the installation ended, I checked out some of the programs and was able to use Word (well, it functions), open Excel and use a bit of Publisher. I downloaded a powerpoint presentation and that definitely works. The problem: constant and continuing interruptions while attempting to use Word that read something like: Word encountered a problem and has to close; regret the inconvenience, etc. Another message appeared telling how to avoid so many problems by downloading Office updates. On the Microsoft site, I had the Microsoft scan and found about five or six downloads were needed. I began with the first on the list which was SP1, but I don't recall whether that was for just Word or for Office. SP1 would not install. The error message that I deleted, without thinking about it, told some file is not available. The same experience with SP2 and one other recommended download/installation. Question: does the error 1316 of the installation have anything to do with inability to install needed updates? How do I fix whatever is causing the problems? My fixing it will have to be simple, but I sure don't want another expensive trip to the Geek Squad if it can be done fairly easily by me at home. Any and all help/guidance appreicated. Rick Powell

I am bjc> getting error messages saying it can not access my windows bjc> installer. I have Vista. Appears this is a registry error and you may be able to use System Restore to roll back to a time before this problem started. If not then the only recourse is to add back the missing registry key as detailed below ... Start REGEDIT ( type REGEDIT into the search box above the start button and you'll see it in the search results window ) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ You'll probably find that the key msiserver is missing, or if it's there it contains the wrong information. If it's not there, create an Expandable String Value by clicking on the 'New' menu option and entered the following location for it.. "\Windows\System32\msiexec.exe /V" If it is there, check that the above information is in it. Now try the install of Windows Live and see if it works, should do without needing a re-boot but always worth doing this if it doesn't just in case the new entry needs to be re-read on boot. As ever when working with the registry make sure you have set a manual restore point to go back to if it doesn't work. -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.04 'Jaunty'

When I reset it in Internet Explorer it does not do any good. When I try to re install the Windows Installer it gives me this message, "Not enought storage is available to process this command" I assume there should be a folder for the windows installer but I can not find it. Do you know where it is? I have tryed to install Windows Live it will not do it. It says it can not access the windows installer. I tryed to use my scanner and I get this message, " The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if the windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance." I assume by support they mean Microsoft, is that right? Appreciate any help. Now they have added a lot of additional stuff and I am (well, most of the time) happily getting acquainted with it. Since I have ancestors in San Antonio I am particularly happy they have some of the old SA newspapers. That's the good news. The bad news is that on some of these newspapers, the type looks "garbled". I have tried to download their 'easy reader' software but have not been successful. When I inquired I was told the configuration of my computer makes it impossible to download. Has anyone else had that problem? If so, have you found a way around it? Floreda
