    1. Re: [SR-NEWBIE] Computer on and running but Monitor screen blank
    2. When my laptop goes into hibernate, it will not recover no matter which buttons I push and for how long. I have to unplug the laptop from power, remove the battery, reconnect all, and reboot. For some reason, my laptop will not let me change the power options to "do not hibernate". Other laptops have a hibernation recovery program, and will allow a change to "do not hibernate". For your laptop, if you want to avoid it going into hibernation, Go into Control Panel > Power Options Reset it so it does not go into hibernate. You may also have a screen saver that's faulty so try changing to a different one to check that.

    2. Here's what happens: The computer is on and working fine. I leave for a couple of hours and when I return the computer is still on but the monitor screen is blank. Neither moving the mouse and or anything else I do will make the monitor active again. Hitting the power button and rebooting is the only thing that works. After rebooting everything is fine again. This has happened 3 times recently. I have not changed any settings. Anyone have any idea what the problem is? Thanks for any help. Vonda

    3. I have given my old computer with XP to my sister and wonder if I could clean the hard drive of all my programmes without having to remove them all individually.   I also have the XP installation disc and was wondering whether if I put that in and run it, it might do the job for me.   She is not computer literate and has decided she might go on-line if the computer was more up-to-date - ie without all my programmes etc.   Your help would be greatly appreciated.   Bette (UK)

    3. With the newer computers one can change the region. I watch movies limited to PAL (non-USA) on my PC and with cable I can use the PC and watch the movie on my TV. But I cannot put the movie disk into my DVD player because my DVD player won't play it. By the time your records are being shared, I suspect most everyone will have learned what can be done to get around the regional limitations. We use NTSC in this country. Ridiculous isn't it? My husband remembered reading somewhere that CDs are now coded by regions, so that they cannot be copied and shipped around the world. Our friends have a technologically savvy son who was able to get around it after 3 tries. My concern is -- what about my genealogy? Is it only pictures that are unable to be shared, or are the CDs I'm making for all time and eternity only going to be seen by those who live in my state, or my country? Nancy

If the reason was due to a virus infection then there will be infected files in the Windows.old folder but they won't be active as you need to access the files in a special way to extract them. So what you do is fully update your new installation and get all the security in place before extracting your data from the folder. You will not be using it to copy system files that are in there ! Pretty much as you'd do is the backup was on an external drive :-) -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.04 'Jaunty'

    2. Barry, Just ran across a Microsoft Article that says after you do a Vista Re-install you can manually put back the Windows.old folder to restore a windows previous installation. My question is suppose the reason for the Reinstall was that you had a Virus or Missing System files or something like that, doesn't this just put back the problem that you had???? When a fresh install of Vista is done on a drive that's already had Vista on it this 'old' folder is created which contains *all* the files that were on the original installation. The idea is that you go through this folder and copy the stuff you need ( documents / pictures / music etc ) and when sure you've missed nothing it's OK to remove the 'old' folder.
