    3. Hello Lorraine, Monday, February 1, 2010, 7:56:50 PM, you wrote: LDV> Thanks to those who responded to my query regarding Firefox as my LDV> default browser. If Firefox works better than IE then you can say 'Yes' to making it the default browser. This will mean links to web pages will open in Firefox instead of trying IE and ending up failing. However the main reason for IE being so troublesome is that it tends to collect a whole load of junk inside it that clogs up the works. There is a free program called CCleaner ( www.ccleaner.com ) that can help get rid of all this rubbish and may help your PC run a whole lot better, as well as IE ! One thing to watch out for with CCleaner is that it is set to remove all cookies from IE / Firefox etc and that will mean any web site that 'remembers' you when you return will forget you and you'll need to do the log-in procedure all over again. This can be changed by un-ticking the 'Cookies' option for IE and Firefox - IE settings are on the front page of CCleaner when you open it but Firefox is on the 'Other Programs' tab. Another thing that PC's need on a regular basis is defragmenting the Hard Drive - not as difficult as that might sound, it just means a bit of housekeeping putting all the bits of files that should be together all in one place. Click on [ Start / All Programs / Applications / System Tools / Defrag ] to start the program then click on the button labeled [ Defragment ]. If you've never done this it may take quite a while and it's best to leave the PC alone whilst this is working. You can try to still use it but it will be slow and jerky so not worth the frustration <lol> Hope the above isn't too much to take in at one go but please ask for more explanation as required. These computers are machines and we are in charge - not them !! -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.10'Karmic'

    3. Thanks to those who responded to my query regarding Firefox as my default browser. I am currently using MSN and IE. I still don't know what is the best course of action to take. I am 83 yrs old and learned most of what I can do through trial and error and watching my children and grandchildren using the commuter and then trying to remember what I saw. I srtill have a lot to learn. I love reading the problems and answers on this site. I also learn from it. I' m grateful to one and all. Lorraine

    2. To make Chrome your default browser, with Chrome open, look for the wrench with down arrow beside it near right upper corner and click on the wrench, look for "options", click on it, then look for "basics" tab, click on it, then you will see where to set your default browser and also where to set Google as your default search engine if that is the other thing you are wanting to accomplish. Cora Can someone tell me how to make google chrome open automatically when I go to search , especially on Face book ....... I guess I am saying how do I make it my browser permanently ? I am sure this has been discussed before .. but I do not remember Thanks Gerri ......

    2. Lorraine I dont like choices where the pc is concerned because my choices are always the wrong ones. So I follow blindly Joan or someone that knows what they are doing loooooooool I really dont understand directions they go over my head and I am neaderthaul so anything new is scary. I have IE as my everything browser but thanks to Joan I am now in the 20th Century and found Firefox very nice and I have switched many things to it like Facebook and Mafia . One day maybe Ill be brave enough to go to the 21st. I finally figured it out after 3 people told me that default means the original way the set up should be. Ema Every time I try to log onto IE I have a hard time. It is very slow coming up or it doesn't come up at all. So I started logging on to Mozilla Firefox and it came up right away every single time. But every time I log in, a question arises asking if I want Firefox to be my default browser. I'm not exactly sure what it means by that and I don't know if I should say yes. I like the fact that it comes up and I don't have any trouble with M Firefox. I am currently using MSN as my homepage. There is a lot o terminology I don't understand and default is one. Any advice would be welcome. Lorraine

    3. Barry, I am back with two questions: 1. how do I create a new folder in the root of the Thunderbird program? So far, I have tried creating two folders and the message pops up "sub-folder of RANA"; 2. Yes, I would like to remove the Local Folders from our Thunderbird page. I searched again the tutorial and could not find the answer. Please provide instructions? Again, I thank you for your time and help. 3. Hello RickandRana, Sunday, January 24, 2010, 7:11:11 PM, you wrote: R> 1. Where is best place for use of folders in Thunderbird email? R> Within account or in local folders? Depends on whether there's more than one user. The idea of 'Local Folders' is to have a common area which can be shared between all users if they use different login profiles. For a single user there's not a lot of use for the local folders but some use them as a sort of archive store to keep the account Inbox as empty as possible - which all e-mail clients much prefer. R> 2. If a folder is created anywhere in Thunderbird, can its contents R> be easily retrieved? Email messages themselves are not as easily R> retrieved (for us, anyway) as are .pst files. Mail for each folder has it's own file that is stored in the profile folder on the hard drive. There are programs that can extract mail from these folders but if you have a copy of the whole profile folder you can install a fresh copy of Thunderbird ( on the same PC or another one ) and copy the contents to transfer the whole thing, e-mail and accounts all in one go. In this respect it's similar to the PST file of Outlook except it's a collection of separate files so damage to one doesn't wreck the whole thing. A damaged PST file can render the whole thing unreadable !! R> 3. What is meaning of local folders? Explained above methinks <lol> BTW - there is a way to remove the local folders if you feel they are just too confusing. One other point when creating new folders to store mail in to keep the Inbox as empty as possible you need to make them in the root of the account not as a sub-folder in Inbox ... i.e. Account ... Inbox ... New Folder Name ... Outbox ... Sent Items NOT Account ... Inbox ...... New Folder Name ... Outbox ... Sent Items The second method does not keep the Inbox empty as the new folder is stored inside it ! -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.10'Karmic'

    3. I do not understand the meaning in Thunderbird email of "local folders"; however, when reading Thunderbird tutorial, it seems to me use of local folders is preferred to creation of folder under account name. Have I misinterpreted what I read? My questions: 1. Where is best place for use of folders in Thunderbird email? Within account or in local folders? 2. If a folder is created anywhere in Thunderbird, can its contents be easily retrieved? Email messages themselves are not as easily retrieved (for us, anyway) as are .pst files. 3. What is meaning of local folders? Windows XPpro, SP3, Mozilla Firefox TIA Rana

Sounds like the driver has been corrupted or lost somehow but the first thing to try is a System Restore back to when the sound was still working. Often that's all you need to do so worth trying :-) If that still doesn't fix it then you are looking at finding the sound card drivers and re-installing. Often all you need do is go to the web site of whomever made your system and search for the drivers for your model number. -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.10'Karmic'
