Sometimes the only way to remove an errant program is with the special tool provided by the vendor ( if they make such a thing, not many do ) and that would have been my next suggestion but you've beaten me to it so well done <lol> FWIW I think the new version of Avast is a big improvement over the old one so if you found it OK you could always try that out. A big improvement is the registration, though it still needs an e-mail address to send out the renewal it automatically registers the first year for you :-) -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected] MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.10'Karmic'

    2. If you want to truly have the best longevity in your material, I have heard there is archival ink to use also. I have never tried it however. Lilke you, I have been satisfied with using the archival paper and sleeves. Don't use the plastic notebooks. They are not archival safe. Use f paper ones if you can find them. Newspaper should never be placed with things you want to keep. They cause destruction too. I copy them to add in and then place the originals in a separate place. For pictures I have gone back to albums with the black sheets of paper to place them on. Light causes them to fade more rapidly and it makes sense that white is not the right color to use. My old photo album from childhood was black paper. Maybe they knew what they were about. Fran

    1. [SR-NEWBIE] Downloading images
    2. I have been trying to save some photos from a web site to my computer. They are jpg files but when I click "save as", I get only the choices "art" and "bmp". I click "bmp", but then when I try to open them in Irfan, it says that they are "art" extensions and Irfan cannot read them. How does jpg extensions change to art and how can I save or convert them as jpg files? Or how can I download as bmp so I can convert them to jpg? Thanks very much. I think this was discussed before but I cannot find the thread. I apologize for the duplication.</HTML>

It always comes back with this message. bjc> "system restor did not complete successfully do to an error" First of all your System Restore is hosed so that needs dealing with but it will not restore files unless you've added that functionality to it. By default it only does system files not user data files. One of those occasions when a backup proves it's more than worth the effort to keep up with - but you won't be the last to find this out the hard way .... nor the last unfortunately <sigh> Anyway, lecturing apart you might be able to recover your file as Woody suggest by searching for it without specifying the extension type. To do this, and assuming the file name is filename ( change this for whatever the lost file was actually called ) then search for filename.* The '*' at the end is a wild card that means any extension at all and should find .bak / .tmp etc... one of which may be the file you lost or a previous version of it at least. As for System Restore, the only way to sort this out is to turn it off and then back on again. This deleted all current restore points but they aren't any use to you now anyway and being hosed means it isn't saving any more in a way that's useful to you, i.e. being able to roll back to them !! -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected] MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.10'Karmic'

    1. Re: [SR-NEWBIE] restore in vista
    2. I've never had a failure to restore due to a stated "error". It just wouldn't go back to a restore point. My problem was with Norton Internet Security apparently preventing it. To get around that, I had to restart in Safe Mode, and then do a restore. Then a restore would be successful. In fact, I had a "recovered from a serious problem" this morning, and my Norton wouldn't run. I did a restore per above, and all is well now. But I sort of doubt that a restore will recover your missing file. Might try looking in the recycle bin to see if by wild chance it went there, and then try doing a search for the on your computer, but without the 3 digit extension (in case if given a tmp or bak extension). Not likely that will succeed, but worth a shot. Woody ==================== , [email protected] writes: I have lost a file. I tryed system restore with several restore points that I have.
