After doing the IE7 "reset" as Barry says, I'd upgrade IE7 to IE8. IE 7 gave me problems opening PDF and SWF files. I had read about problems with IE8 that made me gun shy, but I'm now using IE8 on both my desktop and laptop, and there have been no problems. Or any way to get ie7 to move faster Opera is a pretty good browser and I've tried the latest one myself. Still like the extras that Firefox have and although Opera has made a lot of good changes to the layout I still feel uncomfortable using it, but that may be more down to the fact I use Firefox exclusively. As for IE7 - reset it to defaults by going to [ Tools / Internet Options / Advanced ] and clicking on the reset button in there. This will disable all toolbars, reset security to defaults and change the home page back to what it was when the system was new. After you've done that, and IE7 is working again, then either switch to Opera or update IE7 to IE8 which is a lot more secure !! -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected]
I have been having problems with ie7 it is so slow and I dont know how to fix it. I have tried everything I could think of which maybe isnt much. Anyway in the meantime I downloaded opera. Does anybody know anything about it. Or any way to get ie7 to move faster EMa
Thanx Barry. The reason I couldn't find spy doctor was that it hadn't been set up yet. It just showed up with the letters it uses. I used Revo to delete it. -- Bev Carlson

I checked in my control panel. Presumably you installed this then removed it using Add/Remove Programs or otherwise ran some sort of un-installer ? If you did this then it should have removed the bulk of it but perhaps left some files over in C:\Program Files so try looking in there but be very careful what you delete and make sure it's related to this program. Also to find out where all your hard drive space has gone try using Tree Size Free - this really does show where it's all gone :-) http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/ -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected] MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.10'Karmic'

Check that the power plug is seated properly in the back, it's very similar to a bad connection there so worth checking out. Only way to tell if it's the monitor or PC is to try a know good monitor on this system or try the suspect monitor on a known good PC. Once you can determine which one it is you have a chance of finding out what's going on :-) -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected] MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.10'Karmic'

After defeating three Trojan Horses,I find that I have lost my rundll32.exe and computer will not run properly without it. After years of reading of the problems of you members ,now I need help and I'm over 90 years old. Thanks,Charlie
For the last few days, when I first power on my computer, the display on the monitor flashes on and off for several minutes, then stops. Today, I noticed that not only was the screen going blank, but the power button was also going dark when the screen was blank. I've downloaded the most current chipset drivers from Intel which has had no effect on the problem. The problem seemed to coincide with a windows update, but I'm not sure as I don't always hang around for boot up. Does anyone have a clue?? Is it the monitor or something in my PC?? I have an ASUS P4P800-VG motherboard on an Intel Pentium 4 chip with Intel 82865G graphics controller Revision 2. I'm using a Princeton 19 inch flat screen monitor and windows XP Can anyone help??? Norma
My problem was similar, only I have two hard drives & my computer said I only had one. I had to take it to the 'doctor' to look at & he found that a wire had become loose inside the computer. Hopefully your problem will be fixed just as fast. -- Bev Carlson of MN, USA
I believe this is the list that talked about downloading the free spyware doctor. How do I get rid of it? I can't find it in my programs, nor any where in my computer, but I know its there because it took up a great deal of space on my hard drive. And how do I find it. I have two problems. I have used a program for over two years called New Family Search for genealogy. Then suddenly for no reason I know of when I click to open it I get a window saying my resolution on the monitor is not compatible. I can click it and go on but it just adds one more click. I have reset the resolution to every setting available and nothing changes. Second problem the little icon that used to be down on the bottom right hand side to set the volume up or down just disappeared one day. then came back a few days later. I did nothing to change it that I know off. It then disappeared again and I can not find it. I have looked every place I can think of. I know just enough about a computer to be dangerous. I used that to reset the volume often so I miss it. I still have some volume but can't change it so easy now. I wondered if it some how got turned off. Can any one help? Thanks in advance. If you are a paying AOL customer and can call tech support (free AOL users aren't entitled to phone support) call them and explain the problem. This has come up before and the phone techs were able to talk the callers through some steps (a bit complex) to get things working right again. I had this issue on my old laptop -- and it involves a file that got corrupted. You probably also get an error message when you first load the AOL software telling you about a corrupted file and saying AOL will try to fix it--but the file remains corrupted. When you tried to restore it using the AOL disk did you reinstall or what? You may need to do a "clean" install meaning remove the existing AOL version and install fresh from the disk but I'm sure on our AOLers mailing list a few people wrote that phone tech support was able to get the problem fixed without reinstalling. For the last two days, when my computer is first booting up in the morning, the display lights up then goes black. This happens every few seconds until the entire process is finished and then the display stays on full time. Does anyone have a clue?? I'm using an Acer mother board, Princeton 19" flat screen monitor and MS windows xp. When I went into the control panel this morning, and checked the various tabs in display, I did discover the desktop tab showed "azul" as the option, but the monitor in the tab was black. I re-set the option and the correct desktop came up... Is there any connection? Norma
To all who wrote with advice, guidance and suggestions regarding my question about using acid free paper, I thank you for taking time to write and offer help. Many thanks. Rick and Rana
When I bought my first batch of acid free paper a few years ago, as I was standing in line to pay for it, I saw that it was made in China. I started to laugh and thought, "Good luck with That, girl." We can only hope that they are using better quality control methods than they do with dog food, dry wall, and other things; so I just cross my fingers and hope the stuff lasts til the next generation works out all the bugs. BTW, I got the black paper albums for photos, and tried to use a white pen, with not a lot of sucess. I just saw somewhere the other day that one needs to use a white PENCIL. I really wondered how they did that in the old days! Nancy
I just thought this was something interesting. Anddddddd its only from my limited expierence which usually narrows my mind. I Have a pocket phone book with phone numbers and addresses written in pencil in 1938 which is in perfect condition. I have photographs over 100 years old that are in perfect condition. I also have original government documents over 100 years old like birth certificates etc that were kept in a vault that are completely messed up. I also have copies of cheap post cards written 70 years ago that are in great condtion So my one way mind sees that government documents and papers are written on the cheapest paper available. I wonder where the money goes. Ema > Hello RickandRana, > For long term document or photographic storage then acid free paper is a must. The non acid free stuff goes brown and crinkly after a number of years ! Barry, thank you again for your time and help! We are reassured--- Rana
Hiiiiii Barry. I reinstalled avg....I have it on another pc and had no problem with it and to tell the truth I kept forgetting how to take scans on avast. There are so many things I have to do to clean up the pc that the easier it is for me the happier I am. But thanks anyway Barry Ema Hello Ema, Wednesday, March 31, 2010, 12:45:19 PM, you wrote: Eac> I downloaded a tool from avast and had to put the pc in safe mode Eac> to uninstall it. That was the only way to get it out nothing else Eac> worked. Sometimes the only way to remove an errant program is with the special tool provided by the vendor ( if they make such a thing, not many do ) and that would have been my next suggestion but you've beaten me to it so well done <lol> FWIW I think the new version of Avast is a big improvement over the old one so if you found it OK you could always try that out. A big improvement is the registration, though it still needs an e-mail address to send out the renewal it automatically registers the first year for you :-) -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected]
Hi Barry, Thank you for your reply. I will be making a copy of the photograph as you advised and wrapping the original so that the light doesn't get to it. Hope it survives. Yolanda
Hello Franmuse, Saturday, April 3, 2010, 3:11:00 PM, you wrote: Fac> If you want to truly have the best longevity in your material, I Fac> have heard there is archival ink to use also. Good point as the compatible inks are fine for temporary things but for long term storage you really do need to use original inks from the printer maker as well as the acid-free paper. It's also not just a case of swapping out the ink cartridges if you have a printer that has a separate print head ( such as some Epson / Canon printers ) as the other ink takes quite a while to flush through. Archival storage is a complex can of worms <lol> -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected] MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.10'Karmic'
