I received Windows 7, the cadilac version (don't remember the exact name) as a gift from my son-in-law.  I've worked my way thru on the Windows.  This is the easiest to use.  It runs fast and smooth.  When you install it, it offers you a guide but I didn't spend much time using it.  It does all sorts of clever things that I never use.  I basically use my laptop to do genealogy and download and print some things I need for my business.  I also check for workshops and business leads on line, file my income tax, and keep my personal and business accounting up to date.   I got my first computer in 1994.  I would consider myself to be an intermediate user.  I definitely belong on this list as I am 69, pushing 70.   So don't be afraid of it.  Learning new things keeps our minds agile. 1. [SR-NEWBIE] Printer problem
    2. Nancy & Ted
    3. All of a sudden (which is the way most problems happen, I suppose!), our printer will not work. After looking at all sorts of Help on the problem, we uninstalled this printer, and installed another one. Same thing, won't print, but the computer recognizes that the printer is there; but when we try to print a page, we get a message saying "This document failed to print", with lots of other letters and numbers, but they disappear before I can write them down. We have tried printing emails, Word pages, web pages, and always get the same message, This is probably too complicated to get an answer on the list, but just in case it is a teeny tiny button we forgot to click (please God), I'm putting it out there....... Yes, that's the price paid for the 'free' service from AOL and it's how they make the money to run it all. The AOL software has all these built-in adverts that cannot be stopped and also there are advert links added to all e-mails sent through them. The only other way to do it is to not install the AOL software at all and just go to the AOL home page in Internet Explorer. This will show a slightly different page though still with adverts of course but you don't get the pop-up ones as AOL connects and you still have e-mail links etc. Note that this only works if you have AOL broadband through a router - if you have a USB dial-up broadband modem then it needs the AOL software to connect ( there is a way around this but it's messy to set up ). -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected] MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.10'Karmic'

    1. Re: [SR-NEWBIE] AOL 9.0 security edition - Bev
    2. Bev, thanks a lot for the offer; I do have a CD - in fact several, which include 9.0 optimized and the security edition 9.0, but when I installed either of these in the past I think the next [current] version ended up on my computer. Maybe someone can correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that when I installed the Optimized version I found that the Security Edition showed up. How this happens is beyond me - I am almost afraid to install from a CD for fear I would end up with worse than what I have now. I don't know what this laptop is but it doesn''t have any tabs and across the top it only has New, Old, Manage Mail, Search Mail, Mail Options and up above to the right is shows Mail Settings. It just seems such a clean spread compared to the big AOL with the ads, etc. Maybe the ads are necessary - I shouldn't complain for it is *free* and I suppose I just have to get used to it. I must thank a few other persons for their suggestions as to where to download what I asked for but all the big unnecessary "stuff" ended up on the computer despite installing those versions - in fact I installed a couple of versions and they are just filled with ads and stuff to play with, one was with Twitter, another something else. When I get ready to ditch my desktop I will try the CDs and see what happens. Right now we are down to a laptop and my husband's desktop: My non-working desktop was beeping and I tried to shut it up [during the night] and though I was successful, it just won't do anything now. After searching for a way to repair the problem it seems that the motherboard is cursed. It is at least 7 years old and if I can find an XP either reconditioned or new [someone said to call Dell for a new one with XP OS] that may be what I will do. I guess you can't teach some old dogs new tricks (that's me) Thanks again for your consideration Virgene in IN I have an AOL 9.0 optimized CD if you want it. Is there a difference between that and AOL 9.0 security edition? Send my your snail mail address & I will send it to you. 2. Not positive, but I think that MS Works will read and write files with an RTF extension. So if you can open the Word DOC file in Works, then you should be able to save the file with your changes in RTF as well as the usual Works extension. RTF files are sort of a universal file that can be opened in nearly all word processors. Woody =============. [email protected] writes: My daughter sent me a file using Microsoft Word. Don't blow into a fan without holding the blades to stop them from spinning. The air from these cans will turn a fan at a far higher speed than it was designed to go. Always hold upright, if held at an angle it can send liquid through the spray and this too can cause damage if it gets into the wrong place. Overall, if you feel unsure about all the above it's better to trust the job to a local tech who will be able to clean up things and replace fans that are failing. -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected] MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.10'Karmic'
