    3. Hello, I am currently using Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1 which was Beta 2 until the latest update and it changed to just 3.1. In looking at File Hippo at the latest versions of TB it shows the latest as 3.0.5 and 3.1 as an older version. Does anyone know which is the latest? I am in the process of downloading 3.0.5 but am hesitant about installing it. 3. re: Printing changes Well it took a bunch of times, because I kept forgetting how I got there, but I finally was able to change the printing preferences. Took a combination of everyone's suggestions. BUT IT WORKED!!! Thank you everyone! 3. Thank all of you for your suggestions. I'll do the changing once I go off line. Also after I had problems shutting down, now the computer is working right again. Probably is afraid of me cause I yelled & used 'bad' words. 3. Hello Bev, Sunday, June 6, 2010, 6:43:37 AM, you wrote: BC> Another question. The last few times I shut down my computer, it BC> wouldn't shut down. There can be many reasons that would do that but the first thing to try is starting up in Safe Mode - keep tapping [F8] during startup until it either beeps at you ( if that happens, stop tapping ) or the option screen appears ( white writing on a black screen ). When you get that, select Safe Mode and press [Enter]. It will ask you to log into your user account or one called 'Administrator' even if you are the only user and it normally just goes into Windows. Don't select the top one called 'Administrator' - this is a special 'super admin' mode that isn't usually needed, and certainly not yet. When Windows starts like this you'll see the screen doesn't look right and also things like your AV program and most other things that start up normally won't be there. Don't worry, that's how this Safe Mode is supposed to work. Also you'll be asked if you want to continue in Safe Mode or use System Restore - just continue in Safe Mode. Now for the magic ... shut down the PC !! Yep, in a lot of cases that's all you need to do and it should shut down properly. Now start up as normal and once everything is loaded do a shut down again - it should do this correctly. Assuming that it does, go on to use the PC as normal and then see if this hanging on shut down returns. If it doesn't help then we can investigate further so please get back but often the above is all that's needed :-) -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected] MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.10'Karmic'

I am not sure I did correctly follow your instructions and need to again ask for help as well as explain what I did: 1. I followed all instructions and clicked on G where Maxtor at the time was located; 2. I selected change drive and selected Z drive because I liked your idea; 3. Here's where I might have goofed up because I did not return again and click again on G. I just followed prompts and closed everything per prompts' instructions. I now have no Drive G showing; I do have Drive F showing but it shows empty. Drive Z appears to be alive and well showing same amounts of used and free space as previously shown. Please see your instructions on paragraph beginning with word Now; 4. Have I omitted something that needs to be done/corrected? Rick simply followed instructions and everything "looks right" to him. Only because re-reading your instructions and realizing I did not return and click again on Drive G after having selected new Drive Z do I think I did not do something right. Is this too muddled for comprehension? I thank you for your time and your guidance. Annoying little habit of USB drives but to answer your question, yes you can tell the system to always mount as drive 'G', however if G is the next letter available due to other hardware then you'll need to set to the wrong letter first before switching back to the correct one. Anyway - plug your Maxtor in ( and check it's set to 'G' ) and click on [ Start ] then Right Click on 'My Computer' and select 'Manage'. Click on 'Disc Management' and you'll see a list of all the drives and partitions that the system can see - one of which will be you Maxtor with drive letter 'G' assigned. Now - Right Click on the Maxtor line and select to change drive letter and in there change to another drive letter - doesn't matter which one as you'll then repeat the above and select 'G' from the list. You'll be warned that changing drive letters may affect programs, but what you are doing is fixing the drive letter so Windows itself won't go switching to the wrong one <lol> When you've done this the setting will be remembered and whenever you plug the Maxtor is it will show as drive G - also any other USB device that requires a drive letter will NOT be able to use that drive letter so even if the Maxtor isn't connected any other device starts from 'H' FWIW I tend to set external drives like this to letter 'Z' to prevent this sort of thing happening <lol> -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected] MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.10'Karmic'

    3. Are you using a thumb drive/flash drive, something you plug in and take out of the computer? An iPod, anything like that? Something is moving external items one over alphabetically. After you remove the item, restart the computer and see if the Maxtor resumes being Drive G. 3. Within the last six months or so, our external Maxtor hard drive has begun switching from Drive G to Drive H. (This is an automatic event as neither of us knows how do accomplish such a feat.) Most of the programs we have, or most of the backups we wish to do, do not accommodate/acknowledge Drive H. In other words, most of our backups cannot be done directly to Maxtor on Drive H. We have to save to a desktop folder then drag the folder to Maxtor. This does not happen when Maxtor is in Drive G. We just recently defragged and ran diskck on the Maxtor, never before having known to do that. Question: How do we insure our Maxtor stays in Drive G? Can this be done? Windows XPpro SP3 and Vista SP2 As always, we are so appreciative of the helpful folks on this list. TIA Rana

    3. Bettye, I very much agree with your last statement.  We should allow our minds to stretch.  Nobody should be afraid of the computer. Hi Bev! I received Windows 7, the cadilac version (don't remember the exact name) as a gift from my son-in-law.  I've worked my way thru on the Windows.  This is the easiest to use.  It runs fast and smooth.  When you install it, it offers you a guide but I didn't spend much time using it.  It does all sorts of clever things that I never use.  I basically use my laptop to do genealogy and download and print some things I need for my business.  I also check for workshops and business leads on line, file my income tax, and keep my personal and business accounting up to date.  I got my first computer in 1994.  I would consider myself to be an intermediate user.  I definitely belong on this list as I am 69, pushing 70.  So don't be afraid of it.  Learning new things keeps our minds agile. 3. Hello Nancy, Friday, May 28, 2010, 6:32:42 PM, you wrote: NT> All of a sudden (which is the way most problems happen, I suppose!), our NT> printer will not work. When things like this go wrong then it's a good idea to try a System Restore back to a time when they worked OK in case it's a registry file corruption. Go to [ Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools ] and you'll see the System Restore icon to double click on. You'll see a calendar with dates marked in bold letters, these are the days that have restore points saved so choose one before this printing problem happened and see if you can roll back to it. This won't affect your data but will affect any programs installed since that date - so the printer drive may still need to be re-installed but this time it should work ! -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected] MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 9.10'Karmic'
