You might try straightening a paper clip out and inserting one end into the small hole beside the tray. That is the manual way to release the tray. Works most of the time. On the back of your computer there is a place for a telephone line to be connected. If you use the dialup method then you are not on wireless. When you go to sign on you would probably hear some noises call a handshake which is the puter talking to the server and vice versa. I do have the phone cable connected but do not use it to connect to the web unless the wireless is not working for some reason- like power outage. do you have a tv cable company who provides your television channels? If so you would look to see if there is a wire connected to your computer that has the same end on it that plugs into your TV. This would be direct wiring to your computer. If you have a wire from the computer box outside or the back of your TV to another black or white box with lights on it, then that is your wireless connection. It takes 2 boxes for me. One is the modem that is first connected to the cable line. Then a wire runs to another box with similar lights. That is the router and the end of the cords. That would mean you are wireless- no wire connecting the internet directly to your computer. You can have a wireless mouse, a wireless printer, etc. Almost anything you have connected to the back or even the front of your computer can have a wireless item to do the same task, just without the need to have wires running between them, Hope this helps. Let me know if you need to know more. Fran In a message dated 8/11/2010 11:55:43 A.M. Is this true and how do I change it? Yes it is dangerous in that the core of the system is open to be fiddled with, either by the user or malicious programs, but the problem with Windows is that it was designed to be used this way. Trying to run with a limited account is very frustrating as Woody says. Vista and Windows 7 have the UAC system ( User Access Control ) that asks for the relevant permissions to be given but the downside with that it the frequency of it popping up means it gets 'clicked through' without reading most of the time ! So - you can ignore the warning ( and find out how to turn it off ) and carry on with careful web surfing / e-mail as usual. It's fact that the first line of defence is the user and even all the best protection in the world won't prevent a reckless user getting into hot water on-line ! -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected] MicroSoft Free Zone running 64bit Ubuntu 10.04 'Lucid'

I run my desktop with admin rights always. I didn't create an alternate user. As a result, if I want to install a new software program, I don't have to log off from a non-admin user name and log onto an admin user name. Not so on my laptop. I created a user name with no admin rights that would be for "general everyday use". But ... as a result, any time I want to update software or install another program, I have to shift over to the admin user name. That had become a real pain in the neck. However, it is supposed to spare one the ordeal of malware sneaking in and changing your "stuff" while using the non-admin user name. I don't know how to change my laptop settings to delete the "no-admin" logon names, but I figure it's not worth the trouble since it is a laptop that I travel with and is more subject to theft and attacks than my desktop. Barry, bless you! Your calm response has helped calm us and helped us to believe there is hope for us to continue with the laptop. To answer your only question: yes, nothing has changed since first we were given this laptop. Rick has retired for the evening, so I will wait for morning to try your instructions. My laptop is on a wireless router also. On the front of my laptop is a small (what I call slide bar) to turn the internet off or on. Basically an on, off switch. There is a red light if it is Off and a blue light if it is On. See if somewhere on your laptop there is something like that. Lisa
We were given a used laptop a couple of years ago and until about a week ago it worked just fine. We did research online, we had email accounts. Now, we cannot access the internet and have no email. When clicking on the diagnostics icon, here are some of the error messages: 1. problems with the ethernet cable. Is it securely connected? Damaged? We have never used an eternet cable and do not know what they are used for, nor even what they look like. 2. On wireless connection, the error messages are something like this: Cannot connect to HTTP, HTTPS, FTP (and a couple of other things) so check your modem. The modem info says it is working fine. 3. Your network connection is not working. Our router is working as well as ever. Windows XP, SP2, IE8. Questions: we talked to folks at a computer store and were told that without Ethernet cable we could not access the internet nor use email. What do we say to that when in fact we have used both the web and received email on this laptop since we have had it? Have we just had a streak of freaky good luck? 2. we were told to purchase a modem that is wireless and that will take care of both our desk tops as well as the laptop. Again, we have always used just what we now have. If this post makes sense to anyone, please advise. Should we buy another laptop? How have we possibly used this laptop since about '08 with never a problem and with never an ethernet cable and without a wireless modem? We are confused more than usual. TIA Rick and Rana
