Thanks everyone for the help disabling the touchpad on my Gateway NV59. I never did find a disable button or Synaptic in the control panel > mouse section. I used every function key combination (alt, sp, ctrl etc) I could find. Nothing worked. Cleaned the keyboard and touched an area above the keyboard and there it was. Right next to the wireless connection button. I knew it was on here somewhere, just couldn't find it. Seems like the newer the system or computer the harder to find some of the functions. Thank you for the help

Unfortunately different makes of laptop are vastly different in the way the handle the touch pad - some have a button to disable when typing and personally I think that's the better overall solution as those who prefer a proper mouse can permanently turn off the touch pad with the press of a button. In Donna's case the maker isn't as 'touch pad friendly' but often you don't get to find that out until you've bought the thing, and since it's not actually faulty it's not a reason to reject it :-( Hopefully Donna can find the magic setting to turn it off or it's going to mean surgery to disconnect inside and that's a whole new ball game - not to mention voiding warranties !!! -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected] MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 10.04 'Lucid' 64bit

Donna, I had the same problem last year. As I would be typing along, I would find that what I typed had moved up to the top or middle of the document. Since I was typing a manuscript, it was a serious problem. It didn't make any difference whether I used the touchpad or the mouse. After much hair pulling, I was told that the software that comes with a new laptop computer, such as Word, Excell, etc., has limited free use, usually for 30,60, or 90 days. After that it becomes unstable. I didn't kinow whether to believe this, but I went out and bought the latest versions of Word and Excel, which I use most. After installing these, I never had the problem again. I don't know if this is a solution for you, but you might consider how old your software is. Maryellen In a message dated 9/7/2010 9:19:34 P.M. We just got an Epic 4g which we can use as a hotspot to connect our laptops to the internet. My hubby connected his laptop with no problem; however, I can't connect mine. I have no problem connecting to other hotspots. Connected today at the hospital while hubby had surgery. I'm using Vista. Would anyone have any suggestions that I can try to clear up this problem. Thanks for any help. Annette

Hello Donna, Wednesday, September 8, 2010, 2:19:06 AM, you wrote: dac> I have contacted Gateway, Logictech and Windows. No one seems to dac> have a solution. You'd think that Gateway support would know to direct their customer to the settings in control panel !! What you need to do is go to the mouse settings as suggested by Peggy and click on the 'Synaptic' tab to find the section that can disable the touch pad completely or change the settings to make it more user-friendly. I've seen many of these set to be far too sensitive so the lightest touch is taken as a movement or click. Reducing sensitivity helps a lot !! There's often a section for palm sensitivity too so that resting on the pad is ignored. -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected] MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 10.04 'Lucid' 64bit

I had an issue similar to this with a DELL laptop that has a touchpad AND joystick thingy -- you could use either one. The Touchpad generally doesn't go bad and cause the cursor to jump all around but the joystick device is prone to causing this type of problem The solution or workaround is as you say--disabling the divice that is causing the problem in the settings for pointing device. In addition to causing the cursor to jump around in my case--it also often slid down to the task bar would causing erroneous items there to be "clicked" on -- like a phantom control! A Google search told me this was a fairly common problem with this particular model of DELL laptop but as soon as the joystick pointing device was disabled the problem stopped. Bettye, thanks so much. I put my game preference in both the task bar and in start. I also hid the 35 other games I'll never use. This only took 3 minutes to do and I have been agonizing over this for many months. Again, thanks. Maryellen In a message dated 9/5/2010 5:56:47 P.M. Today while on the computer working on my genealogy data, the screen went black and then come back on in Safe-Mode and a message saying that the video driver had stopped responding. I closed the programs that was running and rebooted the computer. It worked fine from then on. Is this a sign that the driver is going bad and need to be updated. I downloaded a program a couple of days ago called Driver Genius and after a scan it said my Monitor Driver needed to be updated and I downloaded and installed that driver. Would it have any effect on the problem I just had? Lloyd ____________________________________________________________ SHOCKING: 13" Macbook Pro for $91.72!
