    1. [SR-NEWBIE] Help with Mail Setting
    2. Carol Myers
    3. Hello, I have just joined the List and am already having to ask for help. When I went to Rootsweb to find this List I clicked on the adress to join (as I have always done on Rootsweb Lists) and instead of the email form appearing I got a message box saying "Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed". This has not happened previously so I must have pressed a button on the computer by mistake. Does anyone know how I get back to the default mail please. Many thanks Carol

    2. Hi, Carol- I'm assuming you went here: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Miscellaneous/SENIOR-NEWBIE.h tml ...And then clicked the link to subscribe to SENIOR-NEWBIE-L? I did that just to see whether anything was wrong with the link and it worked fine for me. It popped up my email form so that I could subscribe. The message you received would indicate that for some reason the link couldn't be associated with your email program and couldn't bring up a box automatically. I don't know enough about gmail to help you resolve the problem but I'm just trying to clarify that these are the steps you were following to subscribe. Thanks! In that case it looks like the password has been broken and allowed access. See if you can log into the account yourself using your original password - if so then change it to something a lot harder to guess such as U8f93Gd01XplQ7 !! If not then get back to AOL and say you've forgotten your password and get them to reset it ( they'll use a default such as ABC123 ) and again log in and change the password as above. Remember to make a note of this password yourself !! AFAIK AOL e-mail accounts are for life but if you don't use it at all for a while they may just delete it at some point. Either way, if you've locked out the spammers then job done :-) -- Best regards, Barry mailto:[email protected] MicroSoft Free Zone running Ubuntu 10.04 'Lucid' 64bit

    1. Re: [SR-NEWBIE] Old e-mail addresses
    2. Barry- This was true until recently that the non-paid AOL accounts just sat there. With AOL's "free" email accounts (which would be any account you are not currently paying for) they DO now go in and delete/inactivate those old unused accounts from time to time. In fact, they recently notified all current paying AOLers that lots of usernames had been freed up if we wanted to try and see if ones we couldn't have in the past were now available. So it may take time for an old unused username to no longer be associated with you (meaning Bette) but it will happen. Until then, she should make sure that all of her acquaintances and any mailing lists or other places that had the old AOL address know that she is no longer using it and that they have her current email contact information. 3. About a year ago I changed my server from AOL to BT internet hence a new e-mail name. Recently found out that my old AOL address is still current and being used by others to send e-mail to my contacts. How can I get it removed completely.  AOL couldn`t or wouldn`t help.
