Joan and all: I have Win XP and AOL 9.0 Security Edition. The "Search" icon with the magnifying glass up at the top right side is the search that I use. It has a recent "Search History" box down below, and when you click on the little arrow to the right of where you type in what you are searching you see your Recent Search History. You can "Clear All" or "Turn Off" whenever you wish. I think it's great. Velma

Joan writes: > I wonder if this could depend on a cookie? Perhaps if certain cookie options are checked off in the browser the history is not recorded? This is really just a guess. < You mentioned earlier about using the AOL search box for searching. I don't. I access Google as a "favorite", and it goes to the URL window, where I use it. I don't think I've ever used the AOL search box (I assume you mean the one up by the Keyword box.) And I never get a history - from the pull-down list - beyond that which I've accessed since I've been on-line. I'm on and off my dial-up modem 8 or 9 times a day - not much time to build a history <gr>. Of course, I have my Preferences set to do just that - clear history and temp. internet files each time I sign off. Elaine writes: > Have you tried a control key/H to see your search history? < I have now, since you wrote....but it doesn't work. And that's fine, because I don't care. I was only hoping to explain Ellen's similar lack of history. The drop-down menu is fine for my use, when needed. Of the Ctrl- key options, only the Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V seem to work. That's all I need.... when the Copy and Paste option from the File drop-down menu don't work. Lance writes: > Pete, you still didn't elaborate on how using Outlook or Outlook Express are connected with using Google? Would be interested to know, thanks. < Sorry. I thought that was implied when I mentioned that I had forgotten to include Internet Explorer in my mini-jeremiad regarding MS products. It was the browser that I overlooked (it's hard to remember things, when you don't use them <gr>) Joan writes: > If you are using AOL's integrated browser you ARE using IE and you ARE vulnerable to any flaws in the design < I wasn't too sure just how much of IE was included in the AOL browser. I do know that (at least once) I was told to go directly to the IE browser and bypass the AOL one, when I was having repeated trouble with a program download. I can't recall whether it was AOL techsupport who gave me this advice, or the program-being-downloaded people. It was 2 or 3 years ago, and I may have been downloading a paid version of Computer Associates EZ-Trust (which is what I use). After about 3 attempts with the AOL browser, I got the IE advice, tried it, and it worked like a charm. As I recall, that's the only time I've ever deliberately accessed IE on my computer. Joan also writes: > hopefully you are also running an updated anti-virus program and screening for spyware and adware as well. < The anti-virus updates automatically at least daily. I've never seen a need for spyware or adware. I get fewer than 5 spam messages a day, out of about 200 e-mails (most of them in Digest form.... more convenient, and safer - I believe). And this number is the same as before AOL started their anti-spam campaign. (As I've mentioned, AOL has advised me that I have no provision for a spam folder, etc., with my AOL 5.0.) Thank goodness for small favors. I don't need a new place to search for mail. I only get pop-ups on a few known websites which I routinely access, so they are not a problem. In fact, nearly all of my 70 or 80 regularly-used websites are pop-up-free. So I haven't seen a need for spyware or adware. My computer is only on-line when I'm in front of it, and being on dial-up doesn't seem to make me a likely target for anything. In the several years I've had anti-virus protection, I've never gotten a virus notification or anything of the sort. Each year, when I renew my antivirus, I run a full-scan on the computer. I'm up to about 60,000 files now, and they're all clean. As always. It's hard to believe that my limited on-line use of a slow dial-up modem would be of interest to hackers of any sort....... but, for the last several years, I have used a paid AV program to assuage others' concerns. I would feel a bit better if "just once" I saw the program doing its work. Guess that's it for now. All tirades gratefully acknowledged <gr>. So.... I tried the old way..... and I got it.... red x box.... no picture.... will try the imagine program and see if it's got "email" this is getting really, really, really OLD! Thanks, for trying to help me.... PAX NancyT Doris, I tried sending it the old way.... that I did before, when I had Win98se.... that you described in an earlier email.... it DID work.... at least, it didn't give me the "red-x-box".... It was HUGE, though, so I "skinnied" it down, with those re-size boxes..... I sent it to myself.... so we'll see how it comes thru.... I will see if mine will let me do "email"..... Wish me luck.... I'm a- gonna need it!! Thanks!! Doris, I just did that.....from this HP Image Zone Plus, which was bundled with my computer when I got it, and what I got was this lovely little box with the red "x" where the photo was supposed to be.... I did just that with the last computer.... it used win98se (this one is XPHome)... and it worked pretty well, except that the picture was HUGE.... I could "skinny" it down, with those 8 little re-size boxes, but I don't know, of course, if that's the way it arrived.... or if it was back to HUGE! Nancy, when you're typing your message you can go to the top of the window and click on "Insert", from that drop down window click on "Picture". If that is greyed out, click on "Format" and then click on "Rich Text ('HTML)". Then go back to "Insert", "Picture" , Browse which is going to search wherever your pictures are. Choose the picture you want and click on Okay. Your picture will be in the body of the message then. No attachment~! Doris, I tried sending it the old way.... that I did before, when I had Win98se.... that you described in an earlier email.... it DID work.... at least, it didn't give me the "red-x-box".... It was HUGE, though, so I "skinnied" it down, with those re-size boxes..... I sent it to myself.... so we'll see how it comes thru.... I will see if mine will let me do "email"..... Wish me luck.... I'm a- gonna need it!! Thanks!! Compacting is a simple procedure in Outlook Express. Just select the folder in the side menu you need to compact e.g. INBOX , then click FILE|FOLDERS|COMPACT. Depending on the amount in the folder it usually is a quick operation. This operation doesn't delete messages. It just removes the "waste" space in the folder. While we have talked about "mass deletion" of items in the SENT folder, users need to be mindful that some of those messages may be of importance, critical importance perhaps, so be judicial in what you are selecting to delete. Don't just blindly highlight and delete. You may be looking for one of those messages some time in the future :-(. One way around storing messages is to use a web mail account. Most of the major ones have lifted their storage capacity for messages - Hotmail now 250 MB, Yahoo Mail 250 MB but soon to be 1 GB, and GMail was 1 GB, now 2 GB+. This is more than ample space than the average user would need (2 GB will hold around 140,000 plain text messages or more). Even if you don't wish to use those services as your main mail account, you can set up one as an accessible archive for messages received on your other account/s. Just select messages you wish to archive, right click and select FORWARD. Those messages will the be added as attachments to a message you can send to your GMail account (just watch the size). Add a subject to indicate what the group of messages is about. When the message is opened in GMail, you will see all the attached messages displayed without the need to "open" attachments. Using this method, I reduced the size of my Outlook "pst" file to a third of what it was previously. Archived messages in GMail are able to be searched rapidly for any message you wish to review (similar to a Google search). The other advantage of this is that the messages can be accessed by you from any computer anywhere. Lance P. S. Check out Legacy Family Tree today! Virus writers do take the easiest line of resistance and so will usually, but not always, target popular programs. Naturally sensible users of those excellent programs take the necessary precautions to avoid the works of these miscreants. Regardless of what programs you choose to use, viruses, trojans, spyware, adware all head out into the Internet every hour. NO ONE is immune to being subjected to an attack. But as long as your "defence mechanisms" are kept up to date, your programs will be protected no matter which one you choose to use. Pete, you still didn't elaborate on how using Outlook or Outlook Express are connected with using Google? Would be interested to know, thanks. Lance P. S. Check out Legacy Family Tree today! The curse is that the virus writers seem to concentrate on the more-commonly-used Microsoft products, and leave computer users like me alone. I don't use any of those three products, and thus - perhaps - am more immune to hackers (although I understand the AOL combined-web browser does have IE as part of its base design?). But no one has yet explained the lack of a "google history trail" to Ellen or me. Pete Schermerhorn

Nancy, why not try an imaging program that is free and easy to use -- IrfanView -- and just do a normal right click at the website and save the image to your desktop, downsize it with IrfanView, and then send the reduced version via email from your desktop? What is the "imaging dingus" that you are now using? I have an HP computer and an HP computer, they both work fine, but I am not using any HP programming dingus for image handling. I use IrfanView. A: First, you should make your picture a manageable size. More info on this can be found in our online Email Picture Guide... http://www.worldstart.com/guides/emailpict.htm Here's how to insert pictures with Outlook Express (Netscape Mail info is below) 1. First, Create a new message and make sure that you have Format set to "Rich Text (HTML)". From the Insert menu, select Picture. 2. A screen will come up that allows you to browse to the picture's location on your hard drive. 3. Find your picture, hit OK, and you're all set. Note that you can set a few other options before you hit OK. Here's a quick rundown: Alternate Text - This will be displayed in place of the picture if the recipient's e-mail client is not able to, or not set to, display pictures. Under Layout - Alignment - This lets you set your text wrapping. For example, if you set it to Left, the image should appear on the left of the message with your text wrapping around to the right. It's actually kinda cool. Border Thickness - If you would like to have a border around your image, set the thickness using this box. The units are in pixels, so 2 or 3 is usually a good size. Under Spacing - Your horizontal and vertical spacing sets the distance the text is from the image. By default, there is some space, but you can increase that area by entering values (pixels) into these two boxes. Here's how to insert pictures with Netscape 7.0 Mail: First, start a new message by clicking Compose, click in the message area, then from the Insert menu, select Image. You will notice several tabs that allow you to select and fine-tune the picture: Location - this is where you choose your file from your hard drive. You can also type in an Alternate text that will be displayed if the image cannot be viewed in the recipient's browser. Dimensions - Here you can set the width & height of the image or leave it actual size. This shouldn't be necessary if you sized it in your imaging software first. If you do use it, keep the Constrain box checked to insure the picture remains proportional. Appearance - here you select your horizontal and vertical spacing to set the distance text is from the image. By default, there is some space, but you can increase that area by entering values (pixels) into these boxes. If you would like a border around the image, put a value in the Solid Border box (in pixels). Usually 2 or 3 is good. You can also Align the text to the image and use text wrapping. That's the main stuff. There are some other options you may want to explore, but this should get you started. Final Notes - If you are using an e-mail client other than Outlook or Netscape you'll find that most of the information above probably still applies. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jessie Newlands" <newlands@telus.net> To: <SENIOR-NEWBIE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 08, 2005 9:29 PM Subject: [SR-NEWBIE] re: clip art > Hi again - I asked this a few days ago but haven't found an answer to my problem and wonder if anyone could throw some light on this for me. Hi, Where do I go to find that "email picture guide"???? I was all over the rootsweb site itself yesterday, and I saw absolutely NOTHING there about it.... (When I get umpteen photos in emails, and I can't seem to do it, I'm missing something, obviously!.....It just can't be that horrendously difficult, yet I CANNOT manage to do it!!.....Please! what am I doing wrong?) Nancyt.... who is getting plenty discouraged about this....
Hmmmmmm..... Guess I never saw that... This will reduce the size of the mage. I normally use 50% compression and medium resolution. This gives me jpegs well under megabyte, normally 50Kbytes from a 10cm x 15 cm print. Have you tried a control key/H to see your search history? Mine shows what I have searched for using Firefox/Google since that is my search engine of choice. I don't happen to use IE much nor do I use OE, but they are incredibly popular, still hold the lead in user preferences, and as with all computer use, maintain properly updated anti-virus programming, a properly configured firewall, and any additional spy/ad/ware programming and you should be as safe as one can be in a volatile environment. The only way to be completely safe is to turn off your computer. Pete- If you are using AOL's integrated browser you ARE using IE and you ARE vulnerable to any flaws in the design -- but hopefully you are also running an updated anti-virus program and screening for spyware and adware as well. Do you use the AOL search box which is actually the Google searches? If so, when you do a search using that box the results page will show you the most recent search terms you searched on when using the search box. That is like the Google search history. Joan
