Nothing is more thrilling to me than to receive an e-mail from a total stranger who turns out to be a a cousin. A friendship immediately develops and soon we discover we have so much in common ie a first cousin is doing genealogy on one of the same names I'm interested in and turns out that we exchange info constantly. She lives in Canada and since I can't get to Canada as frequently as I would like, she e-mails all the names she has done research on, I enter it in our family tree. I then send her a copy of "our book" on a CD. I met her in person on a recent trip to Canada and what fund we had sharing tales. If I had not been interested in pursuing my family roots, I would never have met my delightful 1st cousin in Canada. I hope this person who is asking the question "why do people research" will some day have the same "thrill" I have had. This is only 1 of many instances. She also had question on how computer literate the average person is. How about the rest of your family and friends? Most of mine other than my chidlren could care less. RE: Auto Connect. Well, folks, I rechecked everything that you told me to and I still did not find Auto-Connect. HOWEVER , this old gal would not give up! So I saw a strange looking little icon that showed Hyperlink when I passed my cursor over it. Oh well, I'll try that! I right clicked on it and there in the 3rd place was what they called AUTO TEXT and it was checked. I tried it out and the kept getting the caps at the beginning of each line. So I unchecked it, and I tried again. Well, so far there are no caps at the beginning of each line unless I put one there! So unless something drastic happens, I guess the problem is solved. Thanks to all who tried to help me! I have always said that my computer really does not respect me and I guess this proves it!! Ruth in IN

More thanks to you Larry and Joan. My CD player was also acting oddly, too. Barry, I was having some problems earlier and my ISP installed this "AdAware" for me... He did tell me to run it once in a while, but until you mentioned it, I forgot about it... I was running Norton's scan, but had to Pause it, as I had to leave the house...(I haven't gotten back to it, to see if it would go right on from where it left off...) But, after scanning some 180,000+ files, it hadn't found anything amiss...But it about took FOREVER!! and, as I said, I had to leave... I also tried this "defrag"... it said something about that it couldn't really do a "good" job, because it needed "15%" of "something"... and I only had "14%" of that "something"...... SPACE??? I don't exactly remember what it was, that I was "missing".... it also said I had to delete some files to get the needed "something"... but I would have NO IDEA of what to delete! I did check out my un-used space on my computer....Computer has a 144GB capacity, I'm using 9.69GB, and the Un-used is 134GB.... I guess I would have thought I was using more than that, I have a bunch of clip-art installed.... Sorry.... but I am not really good at this part of computing.... (I'm not very mechanically minded, either!..LOL) What I'm trying to find out is if your whole system is lethargic, not just the internet side of things. From your other posts in this thread I'd say your likely problem is either virus based or perhaps a massive infection of Spyware. Run your virus scan and see what turns up, but also try downloading AdAwareSE from www.lavasoft.de and after updating it, do a full scan of your system. You may be amazed at the number of Spyware items it'll find !! Just having a few of these things will not make any difference to your PC but when you get hundreds of them ( or thousands ) then they really do cause a performance hit. -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 2.0 Deluxe ==== SENIOR-NEWBIE Mailing List ==== Keep informed of the latest news and new databases, webpages and mailing lists at RootsWeb. Hello Nancy, Friday, May 6, 2005, 7:24:35 PM, you wrote: NT> It sure **seems** slower.... What I'm trying to find out is if your whole system is lethargic, not just the internet side of things. -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 2.0 Deluxe
Hi Nancy, I'm not sure what your problem is. I'm guessing you have a newish p.c. ? X.P. in itself is fat & older p.c.s don't tend to handle it to well, if at all. What temp files have you deleted ? Have you done scan disc & defrag, & a cleanup ? Also a virus scan in case something's filling your p.c. Also spyware can create problems. The other thing is double click "my computer", then right click the C drive icon, then down to properties. What does that say ? Nancy, if no-one can fix your problem (I hope someone has a better answer than me), please let me know, please make it obvious, like " for Carolyn" in the subject line, otherwise my delete finger may go crazy & I may never be seen again <G>. The 1st thing I'd do is run a virus scan ..... & BACK UP important files. Good luck Nancy, & if you need a hand YELL, hopefully someone will be able to help before I can get back. I hope his goes through .... List Admin, Joan, & I have been having fun with my email addy ... seems to do what it pleases. Thanks for your tolerance Joan ... I'll be interested to see if this goes through, if you have time, let me know. Hi Barry, Marilyn& all, I think Barry's answer might be the right one. But just in case it's not, when I got my new beaut p.c. a couple of months back, with XP, I had in my start menu, a direct link via the start menu + a few different phone ports. With the ph line in the top socket, I could connect to the internet via the start menu ...but same as you Marilyn, NOTHING. I rang p.c. docs .... I had the ph line in the wrong hole !!! (red face) There are ph. sockets WAY down the bottom, or there are on mine. That's the one you should use. I think (?????) I then tried to get to get on again via the start menu & connection from there. Still no go, I'm guessing that got something to do with broadband ? So then I double clicked internet explorer & away we went, no problems at all. And no problems since then. I hope this helps. You all are talking about doing this in WORD with WORD open, right? Not just "somewhere" in XP, right? Cora > Ruth - It is under "Tools" and is the first one on the drop down menu "auto > correct" - I have XP and it is there alright. > Jessie in B.C.
Sharon, Well, I read the info on the page, and I could surely say I'm not much wiser than before.... that's a bit of over-load of information! I couldn't tell from that if I had that problem or not.... Thanks, anyway.... PAX NancyT I don't want to get in trouble with the admin so let me phrase this carefully. I just got an automatic alert about one of the newest "infections" that one can get hanging around online. It specifically said it can cause your computer to slow down, among other things. This URL was given for more information and a link on the page for curing the infection if you think you have it. http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=description&virus_k=133409 I wouldn't make that assumption, but you said something in your message that caused me to wonder if you should at least check it out. Well gee whiz, David, thanks but I just couldn't find it!! I clicked on Tools when I first brought up Microsoft Word, but could not find "AutoCorrect" . I am using Windows XP, could it be called something else? I am usually leary of clicking on all those words at the top like Compatability, View, etc. but I got brave and clicked on everything I saw! Well, there was no earthquake and the world didn't stop whirling so I guess I didn't do anything wrong, but apparently didn't do anything right either!! Any other suggestions?
