    2. Ruth Foster
    3. Thank you Lance.....printed out instructions from Tip 667. Now have two Mt Documents on the Task Bar and would like to remove one, but cannot. And still cannot drag Notebook icon.........as soon as the icon gets to the Taskbar, a symbol shows up that means not allowed (or whatever). Any suggestions. Why, oh, why, could THEY not leave well-enough alone! Ruth in NJ

    3. You are dead right, Richard. It is WINkey-D. I must have been having a "senior's moment" when I typed that. I'll "sentence" myself to writing 100 lines: "I must check before sending tips!" <LOL>! Probably got too much on my mind at the moment, I guess. Lance P. S. Check out Legacy Family Tree today! 3. Yes, we do have to be mindful of what we send. Though with Roots Web Lists it is not too much of a problem as the messages are all in PLAIN TEXT. Messages in that format are not of a great size. On average most would be under 20 KB. The messages that do cause problems are the ones sent in HTML or Rich Text Format to friends or other lists that do accept that format. One list I am on has several members who delight in using the fanciest of fonts and colours just to write a simple query to a list. The best rule of thumb is to avoid sending messages in that format at all times unless absolutely necesary. Here are some sites which will explain why (so I don't have to increase the size of this message by explaining :-)!): http://www.expita.com/nomime.html http://tinyurl.com/43kmr http://www.mail-list.com/list_owner/plain_text_email.html http://www.frontierfleet.net/email/index.php The other thing to watch is sending attachments to people who may have limited downloads. We all get excited about a fantastic family shot or a beautiful scene we have captured and get the urge to share. Add it to a message click "Send" and away it goes or does it? If it is sets your mail program spinning indicating a very slow "Send" that seems to take forever, the file was far too big. Look at the size of any attachment. Keep it to a manageable size. Or even better check first to see if the recipient is able to accept it. They may be approaching their download limit for the month and your image might push them to a higher rate or close down their mail box altogether. In other words, be considerate. Passing on those jokes you receive too can burden - unnecessarily - other people's mail boxes. What you consider delightfully funny, may not amuse the receiver when their download limit is exceeded by something they didn't want. Passing on "hoax" messages that you receive - you know the ones: "Bill Gates will pay 25cents for every one you pass on to someone", or other similar appeals - that is another thing that should never be done. Check anything you receive like that against the listings on hoax sites: http://www.snopes.com/ or http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blhoax.htm are two good places to start with. Then let the person who sent it to you know that it is a hoax. They will have to let the couple of hundred people they sent it to know that it really was a hoax after all. Do try to avoid forwarding "junk". It really does waste bandwidth around the world. What we pay for our Internet service is probably meaningless to reproduce here. Most of us are really only concerned about what we as individual users pay. Information about different services in the various areas we each live in around the world can be found by a simple Internet search for listings in our individual areas. As for "snipping" messages, that certainly is a good habit to get into. Oh, I know I have quickly answered more than one message, clicked "Send" and only then realised that it came in with several other messages tagged on the bottom, much to my embarrassment. We would all have to admit to doing that at some time or other. I do try to make a conscious effort to "trim" down such messages, even if it is just to cut off the "add-ons" placed there automatically by RootsWeb (and some of those are LONG!). But don't trim EVERYTHING. I have seen messages that have left me pondering what on earth they were in answer to because someone removed all the other post completely. Finally, this site is full of good advice on communicating on lists: http://tinyurl.com/89ngx We probably all need to browse through its content periodically to keep us straying into bad habits :-). Hope this has been of some assistance. 3. Richard you can do that by following these steps: Copy and paste the following lines into a Notepad file. [Shell] Command=2 IconFile=explorer.exe,3 [Taskbar] Command=ToggleDesktop Save the file to your Desktop as Show Desktop.scf. Next left click on the file you just created and drag it down to the Quick Launch bar and release. But the simplest way to get back to your Desktop when it is "buried" under one or more open windows is to press ALT-D. All open windows will then be "hidden". Press ALT-D again and they will all be back in place - simple and quick! 3. Now that's a strange question, Pat. Your Desktop should be the first thing Windows loads after boot up. You don't "open it" - it is part of the start-up process. If you don't "see" a Desktop, you obviously have a boot problem, if that is what you mean. Perhaps if you expand on your query we may be able to help. Lance P. S. Check out Legacy Family Tree today! If you have something running loose on your system that is blocking at this sort of level then you may find it difficult to track down and get rid of - you'll probably find programs such as AdAware and Spybot, as well Anti-Virus will also be disabled or at least made to miss the infection that is causing you the problem. These things are getting sneakier and smarter all the time !! More advanced techniques such as 'Hijack This' and 'Trojan Defence System' may have more luck but you need to be comfortable working in the Windows system and registry for them to be effective tools. Looks like this one may need help of a PC Guru on-site :-( When you get this one fixed then perhaps it's time to think about some preventative measures instead of trying to fix things after the event. 1) If not already using Firefox as web browser then consider getting it and dumping IE and its security holes. 2) Install Spyware Blaster ( www.javacoolsoftware.com ) - it's free and blocks malicious web sites and malware from installing in the first place. 3) As ever - be very wary about what e-mail's you open. If possible, use a pre-scanning program ( Mailwasher is a good free one ) to check your e-mail before you download - apart from saving time and bandwidth you can be sure that only the messages you want are sent to your PC. 3. Hi Arthur, I managed not to do a typo on your name this time :) !! I'm glad you've found where your download was, & I'd say you've solved the problem yourself. In context you have used the term "download" .... rather than the way I was thinking of it .... i.e. downloading "software" vs. "email", ..... then I wonder as well IF there's a way to see downloads in the way that you mean ... i.e. "software". I've had software type stuff try to download to my p.c. & have hit the cancel button, unless I knew exactly what it was. But like you, I have wondered if people can "sneak past" the defences.
