    3. I've tried Lance ........ so near and yet so far ......... I have relaxed my security to allow http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-tools/PDF/Foxit-PDF-Reader.shtml to get through and what happens (as did yesterday) I get this dialogue; 'an attempt was made to move the file pointer before the beginning of the file' and when I click on the this I get another dialogue which says 'The file appears to be damaged' which gives me an OK button to click and when I do this I get my welcome to 'Personal Ancestral File' where I have 19 family history files stored. I have checked and rechecked these 19 files for damage and all are OK. Very perplexed indeed. 3. Hi Joe. I've been getting the same msgs when I try to open some of the files pertaining to my PAF, but I haven't even downloaded the SoftPedia website that you mentioned. What I'd like to know, though, is: How can I open those files again? I used to be able to double click them, and they'd open, but since the msg about a supposed attempt to move the file pointer and the msg about the file being damaged, they won't open I hope someone has a solution. Thanks to all who contribute their wisdom ... it is immensely helpful and much appreciated. 3. Joe, yes it could be a setting in your firewall or AV program. I have just gone to the site and downloaded it with no bother. Play around with your settings (privacy, perhaps?) to see if you have any luck. It could have been that they were inundated with requests too, after their address was so publicly given. 1. e-mail attachments glitch
    2. Boots
    3. I recently switched from 98SE/Outlook Express 6 to XP Home/2000 OE 6 and find that all of my Rootsweb Digest e-mail which have the attachments have all of the attachments transposed, i.e. the ATT...eml file is at the bottom of the list rather than at the top as it was prior. This makes it most difficult to read my e-mails as the questions and answers are not in order and I have to read them from the bottom up. As my PC was down for over a week my e-mail have accumulated to well over 200 and this glitch is driving me batty. Can someone give me instructions as to how to reset the attachment part of the heading to read from ATT down!!!!!!!!! Boots

The adds ..at the top of the page...come up very quickly... but the article you wanted to read... comes up very, very slooooooooooooowly..... The article, itself, was pretty well written....and, from things I've read about spyware, adware, I'm not likely to get trapped by it..... however, because of the over-abundance of adds, and the slowness of the site.... 2. In a message dated 5/30/2005 7:24:57 PM Eastern Standard Time, etm1935@yahoo.com writes: I am sorry and apologize to the other subscribers here. --- Elaine- Thanks for posting this. We really do need to remember to be polite to one another. I can appreciate your frustration -- I, too, would have preferred to reply directly to Winnette rather than post a reply indirectly to several hundred list subscribers about a private matter. I really dislike spam filters that block mail in such a broad manner as this. Winn--I also can appreciate that you think what you are doing is keeping you safe from viruses, trojans, adware and spyware but it hasn't and won't. You really do need to be using a good anti-virus program that is kept updated religiously, good anti-spyware and adware checkers, and be running a good firewall to really be safe--then you won't have to take such draconian measures to safeguard your email. Anyone who is trying to use their computer for genealogy research really does need to be able to receive mail from strangers every now and then. I've met 2 second cousins and many more distant relatives in this manner--completely out of the blue. Not everyone subscribes to lists and not everyone will post publicly. How about people who find a message from you in a list's archives and attempt to contact you privately? They won't be able to do so. Yet, somehow the viruses and trojans can still get through just from visiting some websites and clicking on some bad links if you are not adequately protected. Joan

    3. I am sorry and apologize to the other subscribers here. Had I been able to directly reach Winn, this would not have been publicly shared. I personally think people who so fear the internet and who still are not setting up proper protection should not be on the internet or using email. Bouncing programs are an abomination. 3. Elaine wrote: Yes, my direct mail to her bounced as well. She's now on my personal "someone not to worry about" list. Elaine, Your attitude and the attitude of others like you, is the reason I left this list the last time. I don't think you or anyone else has the right to demand that I do things to suit them. My personal email account is for family and friends, not pornography, spam and people I don't know. Furthermore, If you can be so divisive and help one person but not another, you have the problem, not I. I don't think discrimination is ever acceptable behavior. Joan, As the administrator you know that Rootsweb mail is ALWAYS virus free. That is why we should always reply on list. The list is for sharing data and others to learn from the questions and the answers. However, anyone who would like to be on my list only need say so in an email to this list. Many people will tell you when I have found they attempted to email and it bounced, I added them and advised them of same. Like anything else, there are problems we have no control over. Remember all the weeks we had no email and sometimes we get 3 copies of one, I don't think we have fits about those things, nothing and NO ONE is perfect. I generally trust people, but, my activity in genealogy has my email address spread all over the internet. I am getting pornography that has subject lines, that spammers and porn operators have taken from genealogy mail. So, unless you are walking in my shoes, you haven't a clue. I do know genuine kindness and being considerate works well on list. I had adaware and that started my problems last year. Lance or another male, advised that we get it. Then when I had problems and asked for help on list, no one advised me what to do and I had to remove the program. I am truly sorry I came back on list and will leave again. Nothing in life is worth having to beg for and then be offended over. Winnette -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
