John, you can change the registered owner name on the computer. This site gives you the steps to do it. It involves editing the Registry so make sure you back up first: http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-10877_11-5630339.html# Whether you will be able to obtain updates I can not say. However, as the OS is still on the original computer you should have no problem. You could always check with Microsoft just to be sure. Make sure the required Microsoft Product Key Number sticker is attached to the case. If it isn't the original owner should be able to supply it. If he can't - forget it as Microsoft won't want to know about it (or perhaps they will :-)!). Lance P. S. Check out Legacy Family Tree today! Paul, you need to download and run Steve Gibson's "Shoot the Messenger": http://www.grc.com/stm/ShootTheMessenger.htm Steve has some good advice and valuable information on that page about "Messenger" and why it should be "shot". Anyy ideas welcome Paul Paul- If you have Service Pack II for Windows XP that should have turned off Windows Messenger by default. Here are instructions for turning it off if you are sure it isn't already turned off: Open Windows Messenger from the Start/Programs menu. Click on Tools/Options and the Preferences tab. Uncheck the box next to "Run this program when Windows starts" to disable the option. After that, go to Start/Run and type services.msc in the box to Open. Right-click on Messenger in the Services list, then choose Properties. In the "Startup type" box, make sure it says Disabled. In the "Service status" box, make sure it says Stopped. If it doesn't say that, click on the down arrows to the right of both boxes to choose those options. If you have Outlook Express, you will also want to open Outlook Express and go to the Tools/Options menu. Click on the General tab. If you see a check mark in the box next to "Automatically log on to Windows Messenger," click to disable that option. If you have Outlook 2002 or higher, go to Tools/Options/Other. Remove the check mark from the box next to "Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook." If you have Windows XP Professional, see article 302089 in the Microsoft Knowledge base. http://support.microsoft.com . Search for this number article. Joan

Hello, friends. My HP Pavilion 7955 with WinXPHome has been diagnosed as needing System Recovery. Among other things, the CD drive doesn't work right. It apparently will "read" a CD, but it won't "burn" one. When a CD-RW is inserted into the drive, it causes a rather loud high-pitched "whine" over my speakers. The DVD drive doesn't work at all, and there are also other issues with the PC. I mention all that just to give you an idea of what I'm dealing with. My plan is that before I do the System Recovery, I will send my genealogy e-mails to my husband's PC. He will Save them as files in his My Documents, so he can burn them onto a CD. Then after we do the Recovery on my PC and get it re-programmed, I plan to run my e-mails back into my PC from his CD. (They will then be files in my My Documents.) I have already sent my PAF genealogy record, photos, and other genealogy-related files from my present My Documents to my husband's PC, and he has already burned a CD of them. The main issue now is my genealogy e-mails. Some questions: 1) Will my plan work? 2) Is it possible the CD drive will be able to "read" and install the System Recovery CDs, even though it can't burn a CD? 3) Is there a way to forward large quantities of e-mails at once? Or will I need to do each one by itself? (I have 200-300!!) 4) Might someone suggest a better plan? Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to offer. Grace Georgia, USA In God we trust.
This is for anyone who uses the Quicken Program for their personal finances. How do I get my reports to print in color? I have clicked on Preferences and then checked Print in color, but it still comes out in black and white only.....no red for payments made. TIA Ruth in IN
