Lloyd, Don't know the answer to your question.... but why go to the trouble of "getting rid of the .url" on the end of each one"?.....it's just 4 little spaces???? Just curious, PAX Nancyt Hello, I lost all my addresses in IE and am adding them back one at a time. The addresses have .url on the end of each one. I renamed all of them getting rid of the .url and then I could not open the website. Before I lost the addresses, they did not have .url on the end. I have always edited the address to shorten it. Is there a way to not show the .url? -- Best Wishes, Lloyd mailto:llhite31@juno.com

Gerri, it will depend on where you purchased your computer and how the supplier set it up. Did they give you any type of "setup CD"? That type of CD is one that allows you to restore your computer back to how it was when you originally purchased it. The Product Activation is included in that CD, along with their version of XP and may not be obvious in any visual way. If you did not receive ANY type of setup CD you may have a problem. Lance P. S. Actually, Joan, the query was about "changing the registered owner" not about the product key. As you said Belarc will reveal the product key. It will also reveal the registered owner. It was the latter which John wanted to change. My warning about the product key was just in case the equipment John was thinking of purchasing had a pirated version of XP. If the original owner does not have the product key STICKER, normally on the setup CD case or pre-coded into the manufacturer's (Dell, HP, etc) setup CD, there is a good chance that the copy of XP is not legitimate as far as Microsoft is concerned. Every legitimate purchased copy of XP comes with a product key sticker and it can be applied either by the owner or the supplier to the computer case. Regardless of whether there is a sticker available, there will be a product key which will show up in Belarc's scan. Whether it is a "generated (pirated) key" or a genuine Microsoft key Belarc doesn't define that. This note (of warning) from Microsoft (URL below) is worth digesting: [QUOTE] Windows Update installs an ActiveX control on your computer. Each time you visit the Windows Update site, the ActiveX control gets your system's product key and sends it back to Windows Update servers in an encrypted format. Your product key is then checked against the current list of known pirated product keys. [END QUOTE] The last sentence is good enough reason to be extra cautious isn't it? First pf all your personal settings in AOL or in a file called Organize not file cabinet. You should back it up. On your taskbar you will see an aol icon. Right click on it, next click on Systems Information on the bottom. A caution message comes up, read it and click ok, then you will see a couple of options, pick open data file. Now you will have acess to all the versions of AOL you have. The organize file should be visible in the AOL 9 and *s;floders, You can copy and paste it onto your desktop. When you uninstall AOL and reinstall, do the same procedure deleting the new empty organize file, and paste your old one into the space. When I did mine went into the AOL shopping folder, but a day later I saw it was where it belonged. Hope this helpsOne think AOL people have is to go to keywork and type in live help and someone will come on and tell you exactly how to do everything you might need to do. Gigi

The thread that I responded too concerned finding the product key. Belarc is one way to do that. I have used Belarc because the sticker on the back and bottom of my machine is next to impossible to read. :-). CD cases get lost, and the product key goes with it. It doesn't mean the program is "stolen" it just means it's lost. Our grandson once and spilled Coke on a CD case for MS Word and the key sticker was gone! Long ago when I purchased MS ME the "case" was paper.... it's gone too. Belarc also comes in handy because it gives you all necessary information that you need to know such as memory, lets you know if SP2 is installed and other programs. This could be very handy data on a machine you just brought or plan to buy. If I purchased a pre-owned computer I would not bother to re-register it, but if I did I would contact Microsoft and ask them how to go about doing this. Have the person you purchase the machine from give you a receipt. If the question of software ownership comes up you can honestly say that you did not know where the previous owner got the program. Re our discussion of XP and the registry key, this has bearing on the use of HP computers sold without backup CDs. Someone shared this information with me. I did request and did receive the set of restore CDs, at no cost, back in 2003 shortly after making the computer purchase, but it appears that others may not have been so lucky, and that some never tried. Relief, via the CDs or download, has now been made available. Check the website to see if your HP qualifies for the class action suit. I actually received two notices from the HP Settlement Administrator by postal mail last week. "I wonder if you know about the class action suit that was filed against HP about this very situation. If you're interested in pursuing it, here's a link that should work: http://www.computersettlement.com. Or call 1-866-778-1148." Elaine

Many computers sold in the US are sold without backup CDs. The windows operating system and pre-installed applications furnished by the OEM are on a separate partition on the hard drive and the programming is accessed there using hot keys in the event of problems. I had no CDs when I bought and unpacked my computer system two and a half years ago. That was the beginning of the trend. I called HP and they did send me the set of reformat/reinstallation disks, I imagine they still do, whether now free or for a fee I don't know. There is no separate Windows CD. I am using an OEM version of XP-Home and it is part of the overall application recovery system. I am sure it is done under agreement with Microsoft. Elaine I care not what others think of what I do, but I care very much about what I think of what I do.
