    1. Sound problems
    2. Sharyn Hay
    3. I just got my computer back from repair. One of the issues I had was "no sound". They said they updated the sound card drivers and all is well. I still have no sound. Now I'm wondering exactly what I should be seeing in the Control Panel or Systems folder about sound. I have a new speaker system I bought today, thinking the old one was bad (and it was very old). I have WIN98SE as my OS. Now, here's my problem: When I go to Accessories>Entertainment>Volume Control and click on it, nothing opens. When I go to Control Panel>Sounds and try to play a sample, nothing happens because the button for 'play' is greyed out. When I try to "Find" 'volume control' or 'sound' nothing comes up. I have a WIN 98 book that says to try reinstalling Audio Compression and Volume Control from the disc. I did. They appear checked under Multimedia in the Add/Remove>Win Setup tab BUT, no Volume Control now appears under Start>Accessories>Entertainment now. What should I have, or be able to do, that I don't or can't? Regards, Sharyn

    3. Search for and delete the file NORMAL.DOT. That is the file that Word should open when you open it. Somehow, your document that opens was renamed to normal.dot. Then, open Word. The normal.dot will be rebuilt as a blank page, and everything should be OK. 2. <<When I try to bring up a new blank page in M/S Word, it always comes up with the same document that I printed some time ago, and evidently save in the wrong area. Please how can I undo this mistake. >> When you first type a document in M/S word, it's name is "New". When you save it, you give the document another name and it is saved with your preferred name. Therefore, when you open a "New" document you always get the last one you typed because that was it's name. (It is pretty startling to see your old one there.) Just "cut" your "New" document and type in your new information and save it with your preferred name. You aren't losing any information as long as you have saved it with your preferred name. To check to be sure this is correct the first time, just open the "Your Documents" file and look for it with the name you gave it. Bettye

You've saved your document as the default template, which is easy to do and you're certainly not the first ( nor last ! ) to do it :-) If you still need to have access to this document, first of all open up your 'blank' document and save it as a new one with the 'Save As' option then close it - in fact, to be 100% sure you won't accidentally overwrite your document, close down Word. Assuming this document isn't needed, ignore this step. Now open up Word again and start a new blank document, which should still show your document, then delete all the content before saving it again. When you open a new blank document it should now be blank :-) HTH -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 2.0 Deluxe

I have a Compaq hw> Presario. Taking a system apart to clean it isn't just a matter of opening up the case so unless you feel confident about removing a CPU Heatsink and fan, taking the fan off, cleaning the whole unit, re-assembling then replacing the thermal paste and fitting back on the motherboard I'd take it to a repairer. You'll probably find they are busy with many other systems having the same problem too, so as an interim measure you could take the side off of the case and use a desktop fan to blow in there. That'll give enough extra air movement to help with the overheating. If you are wanting to have a go yourself then good for you but only do this if you feel you are up to it. Remember that the main thing to watch for is static electricity, and if the air is very dry due to the high temperatures then it's even more of a problem. Keep one part of your body in contact with the metal insides of the case as you work within the system ( painted parts don't count here ) - working in short sleeves is ideal, but I guess you'll be wearing those anyway if it's so hot :-) You can get a special anti-static wrist strap, but be doubly sure that the clip can't jump free as you work - easy to do and you are then working without any protection though the strap on your wrist will make you feel as if you are OK !! Before you start, make sure you have a tube of thermal paste too - you can't re-use what was on there before. Also, we need to be careful where we keep our CPU as many of the newer storage cabinets don't provide a lot of ventilation and the CPU needs room to "breathe" and to allow the fans to bring air in. If you stack papers or books all around the CPU you could be blocking the air intake which could result in overheating. Joan

Possibly, but a more common reason for a system to suddenly restart all by itself is overheating. How long is is since you had the case insides cleaned, if ever ?? During use, the fans inside a PC pull in quite a bit of dust and fluff - this then prevents efficient cooling. So it's an important housekeeping job to keep the insides clean too, if you aren't up to the job yourself your local PC tech should be able to do it reasonably cheaply. Also worth mentioning that there's a lot of very hot weather about right now and if it's particularly hotter than usual then this too could be a factor. Not much you can do apart from get a large cooling fan and direct it at the case. HTH -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 2.0 Deluxe

    3. It would probably pay you to switch programs, Fern, as it does seem odd that it burns in a proprietary format (ATO). There are many available but few freeware. One I have found and used successfully is DeepBurner: http://tinyurl.com/5fhx6 It should fill your needs. The shareware ones most popular are Roxio: http://tinyurl.com/cz6np And Nero: http://www.nero.com/eng/index.html I have versions of both of those and they are excellent programs. Lance P. S. 3. I use the FREE "E-Mail Stripper" to cure this same problem (along with many others). Go to http://www.papercut.biz/emailStripper.htm I installed it on my Desktop and then put it on my Quick Start, then click on it, copy and paste into the Stripper and when it's 'stripped' it will go into any program. I use Word Perfect for my word processor but also use Word (when I have to) and Outlook Express. This only takes a short time to do but I could NOT LIVE without that E-Mail Stripper. 3. I tried this, but Style was not one of the allowable options while I was drafting a message. Material from WordPerfect came in double-spaced. My workaround on this has been to "launder" material pasted into messages by taking it to a plain text editor (Note Pad) and pasting and recopying before inserting it into the message.
