Thanks Barry - you always do provide all of us with very understandable explanations.

What happens when you try to make a shortcut to explorer.exe ?? You can always use the 'My Documents' link and then click on the icon to move up a level. WinXP was built so that desktop icons could be kept to a minimum - in fact it will ask you if you want to hide ones that are there that you've not used for a while ! Not everyone wants to work that way of course but Uncle Bill knows better you know <lol> -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 2.0 Deluxe
I have Windows 98. When I try to open Excel [part of Office 97], I get the message below. Dell technician suggested uninstalling and reinstalling but Excel won't uninstall. I tried installing from disc and I get something similar to below. Can anyone offer suggestions. Thanks so much. Hello Lists, When I search the 1901 online census at the Canadian Archives at: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/0201_e.html within a minute or two I get an error message from IE stating a error has been encounterd and must shut down. I allows a button to send an error report which I have done several times. I have tried un-installing and re-installing Mr.Sid at Lizardtech which has not help. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any suggestionw will be much appreciated. Thank you Dave
Another tip with using SpellCheck, as well using the ADD feature, is that it pays to edit this file from time to time. The reason I suggest this is that sometimes you inadvertently may click ADD when an incorrectly spelt word is highlighted. If you leave it in the SpellCheck dictionary, SpellCheck will accept it as correct the next time you type it that way and not highlight it. To edit the dictionary used by SpellCheck, do a search for "*.dic". Normally, you will find a few files with that extension. The one you need, however, is "custom.dic" which in XP will be residing (usually) in C:\Documents and Settings\<your name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof. Right click this file and OPEN in NOTEPAD. You will be presented with a very long column of words, abbreviations, etc. Scroll down the list and look for things that aren't spelt correctly or look odd or you know you no longer need. You can just delete or edit any. You can even ADD words or abbreviations while you are carrying out this exercise. When you are happy with what you have done click FILE|SAVE (not SAVE AS) and close. Your custom dictionary should now be nice and tidy :-). Lance
In Windows XP you have to go through My Computer to get to Explorer. At one time a helper set it to a shortcut (without asking me) and that is what I have used since windows came out. After a hd format it is not a shortcut. I have tried the usual way to make a desktop shortcut but it doesn't work. Any ideas? Pat
If you can find the windows explorer icon in "My Computer", you should be able to right click it, then choose "send to" and "desktop as a shortcut". -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Version: 7.0.323 / Virus Database: 267.9.0/50 - Release Date: 7/16/2005

Hi Nancy! At least you are off to a good start :-). There are numerous ways to create your own file of helpful links. Bookmarks/favorites are of course the best way to "save" valuable links. And the best way to use those, as I have mentioned before is to use PowerMarks: http://www.kaylon.com/power.html. The reason for that is that PowerMarks lets you quickly access long-stored (or forgotten!) helpful sites. It works in a similar fashion to a Google search. Just type in a word or phrase about what you are searching for and PowerMarks hunts down all entries referring to that word or phrase. There is no need to place URL's in "folders". They can all be "lumped" together - saves time :-). Now when you come across a helpful link in a message, you can either click on it so that it opens in your browser. Then you can save it in bookmarks/favorites (if you have PowerMarks it is automatically added there too). Or, you can "copy and paste" the URL by highlighting it then pressing CTRL-C. After that you can "paste" it into a Notepad file for safe keeping, or even into a message in OE which you can then save (for ever and a day) in DRAFTS for easy access. You mentioned saving phone numbers too. Well, you can't add those to bookmarks/favorites (at least to have them show), but you can easily create an address in Outlook Express (or any other mail program) for the particular name and phone number. Entries in OE's address book don't necessarily have to have an email address - any address is acceptable. You can even add additional notes about the reason for keeping this phone number by clicking the OTHER tab when creating a new entry. On that page there is a NOTES window. You can type anything in there relevant to the new address. Other mail programs would have something similar I should imagine (Outlook does). You could even add a URL into the OTHER|NOTES window also. I mentioned adding phone numbers in bookmarks and having them show. Well, you can "enter" a phone number (or anything else for that matter, in a bookmark, simply by selecting one in your list, right click it and select PROPERTIES. You will see an editable box titled DESCRIPTION. You can type a phone number or anything else in there. It won't "show" nor can you search for it, but at least you have it recorded in an appropriate spot as a reference. In PowerMarks, however, you can enter a phone number in "Keywords" in the Properties of an entry and it will locate the entry the phone number is linked to. Hello bobzmail, Sunday, July 17, 2005, 10:52:42 PM, you wrote: bjc> I have downloaded updates for different things, microsoft, bjc> adaware, etc, and some of these were put in the Add/Remove bjc> Programs. My question is can I delete these from the Add/Remove bjc> Program with out deleting the update. You can remove them from the list in Add /Remove Programs by using software such as TweakUI and that will leave them on the system. It's useful sometimes to disguise a program that you don't want others to see but limited functionality otherwise. It's not as if you go into Add / Remove Programs on a regular basis and even if it does look a bit full it's not going to cause a problem - it's just a list :-) bjc> Why are some in the Add/Remove Programs and some are not? That's pretty much down to the programmer - most will like there to be an entry whilst some prefer to have their own removal program that does things a bit different to the standard Windows way of doing it. Of course when it comes to viruses and spyware they definitely don't want entries that would enable a user to just click on to remove themselves <lol> -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 2.0 Deluxe
