    3. There are many pop-up stoppers available, Barbara. Switching to Firefox to use it as your browser is a good way of controlling those pests: http://getfirefox.com/ Firefox has numerous extensions which enhance its capabilities to control advertisements and pop-ups: http://mozmonkey.com/howto/install/ http://adblock.mozdev.org/ http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/asa/archives/007860.html But if you need to continue using IE, do a Google search for "pop-up blockers" and you will find a huge selection (try this sample): http://tinyurl.com/b59t6 Lance -----Original Message----- From: Barbara Cope [mailto:bndcope@unidial.com] Sent: Saturday, 23 July 2005 1:14 AM To: SENIOR-NEWBIE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SR-NEWBIE] Pop ups Would anyone know how to delete pop ups. 3. Bob, the link Barry posted in his message is an excellent one. Follow those guidelines and you should be able to set yourself up very quickly. And if you want an alternative site, it's also worth reading the various tutorials here: http://www.nidelven-it.no/articles/introduction_to_thunderbird To further aid you after you get running with Thunderbird, here are a couple of sites on how to backup Thunderbird: http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/ http://tinyurl.com/allog To clean up Firefox after browsing you can use CleanMOCache: http://www.buttuglysoftware.com/CleanMOCache1.html Thunderbird makes an excellent RSS reader too, in case you haven't discovered that feature yet. 1. RE: [SR-NEWBIE] Favorites w/ Windows XP...
    2. Lance
    3. To create a shortcut to Favorites in the Quick Launch task bar, you first need to have Quick Launch enabled. To do this right click an empty spot on the Taskbar and select QUICK LAUNCH from the context menu. You should now see the Quick Launch area at the left hand end of the Taskbar. To get a shortcut to FAVORITES in here using XP, navigate to: C:\Documents and Settings\<your name>\Favorites Depress the right key of your mouse and "drag" the FAVORITES folder icon down into the Quick Launch area. Release the right button and select CREATE SHORTCUT HERE from the context menu. You should now see a little "star" icon there. When you click on this, your Favorites folder (at the above address) will open in Explorer. The point to consider though is a shortcut there really necessary? After all the link to FAVORITES shows, of course in IE. It also shows in the toolbar in Explorer. It is available for adding to the toolbar in Outlook (not Outlook Express); and all the other programs available in MS Office. You can also create a HTML file of your FAVORITES by exporting them to a folder on your Desktop, if needed. 3. Hello The, Friday, July 22, 2005, 6:39:05 PM, you wrote: TF> is there any way to put a shortcut on taskbar? Not directly - what you need to do is right click on the task bar and choose the Toolbar menu item then select Quick Launch Toolbar. This will add a different section to the taskbar that may already have some icons in there - a single click on these will launch the associated program ( usually comes with IE and OE icons as well as a couple of others ). To put another shortcut in this Quick Launch Toolbar - click on the icon on the desktop and hold the button down whilst dragging onto the Quick Launch section ( the cursor will change to a black I when it's in the correct place ). Now let go of the mouse button and there will be your icon to use :-) HTH -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 2.0 Deluxe

A popup is a web page just like any other you visit and when you close the popup window the only place it would be stored would be in your temp Internet files. Are you asking about deleting temp Internet files? How you would do that would depend upon which browser you are using. Or are you referring to some other type of popup? Joan

    3. For members who have switched to using Firefox, a new version was released this week - 1.06. The recently released version 1.05 had the effect of "breaking" some of the extensions available for use with Firefox. This version has remedied that. I can't believe I am so ignorant at my age! Windows Explorer is there to be able to locate files anywhere on the Hard Drive or to be able to add folders / files. WinXP wants everyone to just use the 'My Documents' folder for all their stuff and leave the rest of the file structure for Windows to use. If you can live with just having 'My Documents' then there's no need for a link to the rest of the Hard Drive. I think the reasoning behind this was to prevent twiddling where a user wasn't supposed to be messing. All part of the 'dumbing down' of Windows, but the advanced user can still get where they want :-) -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 2.0 Deluxe

    1. Re: [SR-NEWBIE] make shortcut for windows explorer

    3. It is just a case of why do you need any "shortcut"? They are simply a one-click way of accessing something rather quickly. Of course, the less shortcut icons you have on your Desktop makes for one tidy Desktop. Only have the shortcuts you "really" need - any others are just taking up Desktop space and consuming your computer's resources. If you don't need to use an Explorer shortcut, then you don't need one ;-). By the way, it helps if you include at least part of the individual message you are replying to in any thread. That way, your message is more clearer. 2. Lance
    3. Pat, you can create a shortcut to EXPLORER this way: On your Desktop, right-click on an empty area. In the pop-up menu, click on NEW and then SHORTCUT. In the little box titled: "Type the location of the item," enter the following information in one line: C:\windows\explorer.exe /n,/e,C: There has to be a space between explorer.exe and the slash mark before the n. Pay close attention to the different directions of the slash marks. Click on NEXT. Accept Explorer.exe as the shortcut name or shorten it just plain "Explorer" depending on your preference. Click on FINISH. You will now have your Desktop icon back. If you have WINDOWS in a different folder on your computer, just change the above location address to match the one on your computer. From then on, open EXPLORER by using the Shortcut.
