Hello Nancy: The issue may be the scanner? How do the prints look on your computer monitor? Canon and Epson are well known for their superior printers. But some of the better photos I've seen came from HP printers. Scanners are a whole world unto themselves! I own two that I use frequently, an HP (6300C and weights about 10# and takes up a lot of desk space) and a Canon (LiDE 80 / about 1" thick) that I put in my computer bag when I'm doing genealogy away from home. My next scanner will probably be a high end Epson. You are asking the right questions, but put the scanner in you list for review!! Barry, Lance & Courtney, also suggested I try scanning them in on color and also printing them set on color! Sounds nuts, but it worked very well! I am gonna try your suggestion, too Thanks, MUCH!! If you are scanning these then it may be your scanner that's not up to the job - faded scans is one of the signs of the tube wearing out ! It's possible to compensate for this a little with the scanner settings but there's a limit to what you can do here and it depends on the scanner driver software. However, the best way of sharpening up those B/W prints ( no matter where you got them from ) is to load them into a graphics editing program ( Photoshop / Paintshop Pro / The Gimp .. etc ) and adjust the brightness / contrast. With a little bit of trial and error you'll be able to make the blacks deeper and whites whiter so that your Canon printer will be able to do a better job - any printer can only print what you send to it :-) HTH -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 2.0 Deluxe ==== SENIOR-NEWBIE Mailing List ==== To volunteer to do a lookup or to exchange lookups, go here: http://www.RAOGK.org ============================== Jumpstart your genealogy with OneWorldTree. I was told about this at my neighborhood Kinko's (do it yourself print shop). But one other tip is that if they are sepia (brownish) toned, use the B&W setting, not color, because the contrast is better. May not work with all scanners, but it sure has worked well when I've tried it. Sharyn

Hi, (not sure if this is where it should go......Also... contact me at my home addy, so's not to clog up list space!) First.... I have an HP computer, using XPHome, and a Canon i550 inkjet printer (has 3 separate color tanks, plus a black one) I have been trying to copy some old b/w photos. They tend to come out a kind of faded gray. I would like them to come out the way they print from the negatives. Setting it on b/w, is just too stark... you cannot see the details. I've about reached the conclusion that, that's what this printer is capable of. So, I am thinking about getting a photo printer. I'm not too interested in it doing color (my canon does a pretty good job of that)...Or doing digital. I've already got the prints. I just want to copy them. If I can get such a thing, this is what I would like it to be able to do: 1---nice, sharp black and whites. 2---prefer 3.5 x 5 inch pictures (both in the interest of "those are the ones that fit in my album" and that size prints 4 to a sheet of paper, easily) 3---reasonable cost 4---would like to either try it out, or see a b/w sample, so I'd know what it could do, **before** I buy it... The most important thing to me, is a nice, sharp b/w. I don't care for this "grayish" effect... the photos look "faded". I've been using a program that prints 4 3.5 x 5 inch on a single sheet of paper, so it doesn't waste any paper. If I could get one like I described above, I'd be willing to pay up to $300.00 for it. And, I want to know what the b/w prints are like, before I buy it. Thanks, much! NancyT

Eve Thank you Eve, I don't have Firefox ... at least not that I know of ... But I did go to the Internet Explorer Browser and found View and Text there and had five choices ... I tried the middle one and then one smaller and it seemed fine on that page. Not sure how it will work out on the web. I don't find the same View and Text in the regular AOL browser though. I guess one fix at a time will do it. I did upgrade to the latest AOL and that took care of a couple of problems. All my little icons no longer have black backgrounds ... yeah! I can read them now! I went from AOL 9.0 Security Edition SE version 4156.5012 to version 4184.2340. Thanks again for your suggestion, Gail
Hi Gail, Welcome aboard, I'm sure you'll love this list. I also recently got a new computer and went from 98 to XP. The changes below make XP look more like 98, so they let me get used to the new computer's other differences without having the whole operating system look different also. And you can always change them back later on when you get used to the other differences. Why do you need ActiveX enabled to access Google or Yahoo? I use Firefox which doesn't allow ActiveX (without a plugin) and I can access those sites. However, to enable ActiveX controls in IE these are the steps, but be very wary of having ActiveX enabled permanently: 1. Click on Tools menu 2. Click Internet Options 3. Click on the "Security" tab 4. Click on the "Custom Level..." button 5. Optimally you want to set the first five options under "ActiveX controls as follows (the three marked for "Enable or Prompt" must be set to one of those): * Download signed ActiveX: Enable or Prompt * Download unsigned ActiveX: Disable * Initialize and Script AxtiveX controls not marked as safe: Disable * Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins: Enable or Prompt * Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting: Enable or Prompt 6. Scroll down until you see the section labeled "Scripting" - set all 3 options under that section (Active Scripting, Allow paste operations via script, and Scripting of Java applets) to either "Enable" or "Prompt" 7. Click the "OK" button twice to save settings and close the Internet Options dialog box Whether that applies to IE when using AOL, I do not know as I have never had anything to do with AOL. You may have to contact them if you can. You can see a definition of ActiveX here (note the "risk" it refers to): http://www.pcwebopaedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html Lance On 7/24/05, Jococity@aol.com <Jococity@aol.com> wrote: > Hello List, > > I am trying to find out how to enable "Active X" with the Internet Explorer > through AOL. Good morning, Many thanks to Gerri and Eve for the welcome. Guess I'll get my feet wet by asking a question. Does anyone else have a problem when going to a web site, of the print being huge? I have downloaded AOL 9.0 four times trying to get it to 'act right'. Seems that each time it gets worse. All the icons in my mailbox have black backgrounds, too. Hi, I just joined this list so thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Gail, I live in Vacaville, CA. I definitely qualify as a Senior, but am not exactly a Newbie to computers, just to this fairly new Sony with AOL 9.0 Optimized SE which seems to have a mind of it's own. I'm afraid there were too many changes all at once for this Senior. But I keep trying ... Regards, Gail
