Wayne, You summed up my problem to the tee. Now in your last couple of lines, "earlier version of view or up date the OS" well I had previously looked at the Lizardtech home page to see if there was an earlier version, none. But a google search for "mrsid earlier version" got me to a download for Geo Express Viewer, did that, and low and behold, I have been perusing census pages for the last hour. Am keeping my fingers crossed but I think its a go. And my thanks go to you for the suggestion of an earlier version. Very much appreciated. And my thanks to everyone else that offered assistance. Am a happy fella climbing the family tree. Earlier versions of Mr Sid ran on WIN98. The originator of the questionb stated that the OS requirements were for WIN2K, XP or NT4. Since he doesn't have either of them, the program won't run CORRECTLY. It may run for a while then dump, which is exactly what is happening. Solution? Get an earlier version or upgrade the OS. Dave, Have you considered subscribing to HeritageQuest through www.godfrey.org ? I am very pleased with their census pages. It's so much easier to get around. I'm really pleased by the fact that they have some of the Revolutionary War Pension Files that can be printed. There are also newspapers, books, and all sorts of things that you can look at and it only costs $35 a year. I am in no way connected with that site except by subscription!! Sorry, didn't mean to go on and on... Lists, I do use the pdf format but viewing the many maps of the sub districts in a large city like Montreal where many of them overlap is very much slower than mr.sid. The families I'm searching are spread out through the city. Thank you all for your intersest and help. Dave
Dear Lists members. I am still experiencing difficulties viewing the Canadian census images, in that within a couple of moments I get a "Microsoft Error Report" as follows: Appname: iexplore AppVer 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: mrsidi.ocx I am given an option of sending an error report which I have done several times. It then shuts down my connection to the census pages. Tried searching at different times of the day or night does not help. I thought overload of the server might be involved. Clearing my cache does not help either. I have uninstalled and re-installed Mr.Sid version 3.4.5 several times. On Lizardtech download page it states O/S requirements to be Win 2000/XP or NT 4.0. Can that be the problem? My computer is an HP pavilion 6635 and the O/S is Win 98SE with the latest updates. A couple of years ago I was always able to view images from the 1901 census but I believe Mr.Sid was an earlier version that I lost when I had to re-format my hard drive. Surely my faithful old computer is still capable of me pursuing my genealogy interests. Any ideas or suggestions from anyone will be greatly appreciated. Dave in Montreal
Barry: I did as instructed and that part worked fine but----when I attempted to repair some of the files I was told "Access to the specified device path or file is denied". Now what have I done?. I was able to salvage the most important of my files and for that I am most thankful, but I am curious as to what this statement might indicate. Thanks so very much. - Grandma Fern ---------------------------------------------------- Monday, August 1, 2005, 3:09:17 AM, you wrote:GF> I am running 98 Windows SE on a 7598 Compaq computer. This is usually because of an incorrect file association - Windows looks at the file type and decides what should be used to open that kind of file ( a text file opens in Notepad, a Word Document in Word .. etc etc ). This is fine until that association goes wrong - and then Windows tries to do the wrong thing. In your case, Windows is trying to run your files as a program and of course this can't be done !! Now - to fix it you have to reset the file association manually. Not too difficult to do providing you know what program *should* be used to open that file. As long as you know this, put a CD or Floppy into the drive and use Windows Explorer to view the contents. Now - hold down the shift key and then right click on a file that isn't opening correctly. You'll get a menu pop up with an "Open with.." item - click on this and you'll be presented with a list of all the different programs on your system. Look down the list till you find the one that you want the file to open in. Now click on the 'OK' button. If your file opens up correctly - repeat the above but this time tick the 'Always open with this application' box before clicking on 'OK' and now Windows will remember what you want it to do ..... till next time it forgets <lol> HTH -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 2.0 Deluxe

I have a friend that has completed his 165-page Family Genealogy Book. It is all ready to go with colored photos and carefully compiled family history. A fine original work. He plans to provide electronic copies (probably a CD) for immediate family researchers. (They can print them if they want!) Now, who else should get copies? The real question is, outside of the immediate family, what about Libraries? I've heard the folks from Allen County Public Library say they are accepting copies of family histories. Who else should be offered a copy? Does the copy need to be printed, or do these folks accept HTML or other types of electronic copies today? Your constructive comments will be sincerely appreciated! Cordially yours, Young Snodgrass young.snodgrass@verizon.net

Most prefer printed copies because they will be shelved and/or microfilmed. Local genealogy societies may prefer CDs because of storage space. It would be wise to check the library website, call, or write them before submitting to find out their preference and any rules they have for submissions. Some have forms that need to accompany submissions. Regards, Sharyn
Sharyn, I sure didn't know that about the sepia-toned ones.... I don't run into very many of those sepia-toned ones, but I will print it out and keep it, too. thanks! NancyT > Barry, > > Lance & Courtney, also suggested I try scanning them in on color and also printing > them set on color! Sounds nuts, but it worked very well! > > I am gonna try your suggestion, too > > Thanks, MUCH!! > > PAX > NancyT It does work well. I was told about this at my neighborhood Kinko's (do it yourself print shop). But one other tip is that if they are sepia (brownish) toned, use the B&W setting, not color, because the contrast is better. May not work with all scanners, but it sure has worked well when I've tried it. Hello Nancy, Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 9:18:31 PM, you wrote: NT> I have been trying to copy some old b/w photos. They tend to come NT> out a kind of faded gray. If you are scanning these then it may be your scanner that's not up to the job - faded scans is one of the signs of the tube wearing out ! It's possible to compensate for this a little with the scanner settings but there's a limit to what you can do here and it depends on the scanner driver software. However, the best way of sharpening up those B/W prints ( no matter where you got them from ) is to load them into a graphics editing program ( Photoshop / Paintshop Pro / The Gimp .. etc ) and adjust the brightness / contrast. With a little bit of trial and error you'll be able to make the blacks deeper and whites whiter so that your Canon printer will be able to do a better job - any printer can only print what you send to it :-) HTH -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 2.0 Deluxe
