If running XP the drivers are built into the system. Just go to the website and follow the directions. Once I did that it was easy, but I struggled to try to make it work before I read the directions. Seems like I never learn that lesson. Sharyn
I took Sharon's advice and bought a jump drive. I apologize for my inability to use the blame thing. Would or could someone tell me in the simplest way possible way of how of how to use it. I need help fast. - Grandma Fern

Can you open up Notepad ( C:\Windows\Accessories ) and see if you can copy / paste your e-mail text into it ( highlight the text then use CTRL+C to copy ). If this works then you can save from notepad, it would also point to a corrupted OE too and that could possibly be repaired but see below .... It seems more things are acting funny everyday GF> (lockups, strange noises, slow downs, etc) "6 years old, used daily and now making strange noises" would probably point to the Hard Drive beginning to wear out. Average life span of these devices is 5 years, though some go on longer and some will fail a lot earlier. I'd be planning on swapping it *very* soon, before it goes totally - makes the job of transferring a heck of a lot easier. It could also be other hardware issues such as cooling fans wearing out and becoming noisy. The way to tell if it's the Hard Drive is to see if these sounds come when saving or reading files from it - try copying a large file ( the larger the better ) from one folder to another and listen - a little clicking is in order but rattling or scraping noises certainly aren't ! Thanks so much, Joan. If you can't immediately replace it, run out TODAY and get a couple of little jump drives (always on sale somewhere) and back up everything, including saved email. You really are at risk of losing everything at any moment. AFTER you save everything, take your 'puter in for servicing. You may get away with a good cleaning, perhaps a new fan, and minor repairs. If not, you'll know the bad news and can find a much faster and better one for as little as $500. With Christmas coming you might want to consider getting two cheaper ones instead of one, thus spreading out the wear and tear from multiple users. Wireless networking for your home is inexpensive and very practical these days. Hope our replies scare you into action before you make the same mistake many of us have made! Sharyn

Thanks in advance, Grace in Georgia, USA You didn't say which version of AOL your friend is using...but I'll assume she is using some version of AOL 9.0 the most recent version. Her husband has the master account and she has successfully created a second SCREEN NAME of her own. Let's say for example that her husband's screen name is JOE and she is SALLY (just as an example). She can sign onto AOL under his screen name is she likes which would be using his password and the mailbox should have mail addressed to HIS screen name of JOE in it but not mail for SALLY. So, next she can click on the SIGN OFF link in the top tool bar and she should see TWO OPTIONS--one to sign off and the other to switch to her SALLY screen name. She should click on that link and then use her own password to sign on. If she then opens the mailbox for that screen name any mail sent to her should be there. If she is using an earlier version of AOL she might want to address this question to the AOLers-RootsWeb-L@rootsweb.com mailing list. Joan
Hello Listers. My friend has AOL. She thought she set up a second mailbox in her own name, on her husband's account. Up to this time, they both used his mailbox. She can't send or receive mail through her own mailbox. Below is what she said. Might there be someone out there who can help her? Believe me, we both will be VERY grateful if you can. Thanks in advance, Grace in Georgia, USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ They tell me in SIGN ON, i'm to click into SWITCH NAME which ought to show the new name, upon which i click SWITCH, again... you guessed it ... NOTHING... and SINCE that icon SWITCH isn't on my screen, i cannot send or receive my own emails under my new screen name. IN ADDITION, THEY SAY that SWITCH icon reveals 'a yellow envelope' beside it telling me whether i have any mail... NOTHING... which doesn't make sense to me since i notified all of my friends of this change... surely, one or more would have REPLIED by now ??? [I have sent emails to her new screen name ... but she can't get them. Grace] So, i'm wondering about something else .... Grace, DO YOU KNOW whether i should have typed in my husband's password that he has on this account for my own password since my new screen name is on this same account ??? Or doesn't this make any difference since electronically THEY KNOW this to be MY connection ??? I've assumed THEY KNOW I did choose my own password when setting up my own new screen name... AOL did return an email to me saying that i was 'okayed'... but WHERE'S MY mail going ??? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
