I have heard that at some point in time some of Judge's sons (George and James "Jim" for certain) had moved somewhere in West Virginia. I am not sure whether they were working the mine or on the railroad at that time. Martha Sellers(Jim's wife) met him in or around 1950 in Forest City, NC. His first wife Ella Mae can't remember last name right now, had recently died. I'm pretty certain they married January 8th 1950 in Gaffney, SC. They had three children, but the first child miscarried. Rose Marie Sellers 01/31/1954 (our mother) and Janice Ann Sellers 04/18/1955 both in Rutherford Co. Jim was murdered at a night club in Forest City, NC in 1962. As for the murder of Pat Edgar Sellers, apparently it was New Year's Eve and he was amongst family that night. He offered his sister Mertle Sellers Douglas McDowell some alcohol against the wishes of her husband Jim Douglas and an argument ensued. Jim Douglas shot Edgar right in ! the middle of the room. Years later when Jim Douglas passed, Destie Sellers (Edgar and Mertle's mother) told my grandmother "Somebody must have put something in Jim Douglas' dumplings." After that statement I figure that someone may have poisioned him as revenge for the murder of Edgar. I have tried to find death records for him but have been unsuccessful. Now for the cemetery, I know there was a church there on the property at sometime, but it was torn or had fallen down by the 1950's when my grandmother married into the family.I have attempted to research this Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, but haven't found anything. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: charernst Surnames: Sellers Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.sellers/2306.1.1.2.1.1.2.1.1.2.2.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Travis, Brandy (Hi Brandy) and Linda: Wow! You have been burning up the message board this morning! First, Linda, yes I also found Matilda Sellers last night on the 1870 McDowell Co., NC census, living with the family of Tarpley McKinney and Sarah A.. Either Matilda was a younger sister or a neice of Sarah A. McKinney, although the 1870 census didn't yet identify family connections. Sarah A. was Sarah Ann Sellers, who was the daugther of Joseph Sellers listed in 1850 in North Cove McDowell Co., NC, with the wife only listed with initials, M. E. Sarah Ann was listed as S. A. The information about Sarah Ann comes from her death certificate, but ony her father is named (as Joe Sellers). The death certificate gives her birth date as 18 Nov. 1840 (Mitchell Co., NC - of course,no Mitchell Co. in 1840!) Her death date was 5 Nov 1918, North Cove, McDowell Co., NC. This is why I really would like to find the family of Joseph Sellers in 1860. Maybe he died before then. By the way, Sarah Ann's husband Joseph Tarpley McKinney was a child of the infamous Charles "Charlie" McKinney. I won't get into a lenghty discourse on his story, but will try to give you a brief description. Charlie McKinney was listed in 1850 North Cove, McDowell Co., NC census. He ended up living in the Mitchell/Avery Co., NC area. He purportedly fathered 48 children with his 4 wives. This was not a case of one wife at a time either, he had 4 wives at once, all living in seperate houses on his property. Charlie was a classic polygamist, and no one seemed to care. Which, Brandy, should sort of help explain why a white mother and a black father might not have really raised too many eyebrows in that area and period. Southern Appalachia was termed the "land that time forgot" around 1900 when tourist began to have more access to the region with the expansion of roads and the railway. Some were aghast at the people and their strange backwards ways. "A morally destitute, ignorant bunch!" Of course, from the time starting around the Revolutionary War outsiders had been writing about their encounter with the people of the region and complaining about the loose women, how they dressed in a looser, provocative way, and the shiftless men, and the children running wild. Also about the fierce independent streak in the womenfolk. Marriage wasn't strongly adhered to as a prerequisite for having children. And although the courts did press a woman who had out of wedlock children to post a bastardy bond, to assure that the child wouldn't become a monet! ary burden to the State, they didn't press to find the name of the father, unless the woman wanted some monetary compenstaion from him to help raise the child. ( I am not that well versed in how race might have shifted viewpoints, although there was a enough Cherokee/White marriages with the children also being sometimes identified as Mulatto, that mixed race children wouldn't have really prompted too many questions.) I just might add that I have run across a number of very "friendly" women on the censuses for the area, who didn't seem to be inclined to ever marry, but had, over time, a collection of children. The attitude of the people in the area was more of mind your own business and I'll mind mine. (So much for trying to cram a lot of complicated history into a couple of paragraphs!) Linda, it was Marie Hollinger who posted the WWI info on the Charles Sellers. Travis and Brandy, Marie is our list co-ordinater, our Web Master if you will, who is dedicated to Sellers Research, and has been for a number of years. She is fabulous, so dedicated and hard working. Last night I did also find a Charlie Cellars living in Mercer Co., WV in 1920 who might be a candidate for the Charles who was the brother of Judge Sellers. 1920 Mercer Co., West Virginia Beaver Pond District Bluefield City 7 January p. 88B 420 Raleigh Street 24 85 Gilmer, Lettie Head rents F Mu 35 widow VA VA VA Servant Private Family Cellars, Charlie Boarder M Mu 35 NC NC NC Servant Janitor Bank I checked for possible Draft Card Registration for him in W. Va but didn't find one. I also found your Grandfather James Misher Sellers Death Certificate listed in Rutherford Co., NC (He was a resident of McDowell Co).(His wife listed as Martha Ruth Jackson) And also the Death Certificate for a few other children in McDowell Co. I saw where the son Pat Edgar was murdered, only 22. Not much detail listed for the crime. That must have been very traumatic for the family. I also noted that the cemetery listed for his burial was Pleasant Valley Baptist Church Cemetery. Now back to more culling through the censuses. It drives me nuts when I can't find people that should be there! Charmaine Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. A very unusual situation for the time period and place and 2 children would be especially unusual. The father risked being killed back then. The mother, would at the most, be ostracized. I´m thinking that if she was white, as all records indicate and according to family tradition, that they must have loved one another very much. I´m thinking that given their risks, they must have loved one another very much and that even if we don´t discover who they were, that that is something that you and Brandy might treasure. She being single as all knowledge so far indicates, makes it difficult as to any kind of help that might have come from genetic testing as to your Y-DNA. But you might try doing a test and there are even some free tests available, at Sorenson´s Y- and Mt-DNA project. That project is connected to the Latter-Day-Saints though, just so you are clear as to that. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I was simply trying to match up the mother's name on Judge's death certificate with anyone living in that area at that time. I'm a bit confused with the whole situation, but all records indicate that Louise, Loueasy, Lula, etc were single I think. So, therefore, I would assume that Sellers must have been her maiden rather than married name. Also, all records indicate that she is white and from what I have heard from the family, she was white and father black. Not impossible, but unusual for that time period. Would not have been such a surprise had it been vice versa. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The Sellers group are always very helpful and capable. The group certainly helped me figure my family out. In order to figure your family lines, we need some more info, if you have it. We need some more information about Louisa Sellers. You said that you thought you descended from Joel Sellers´s daughter Louisa, Joel living in Horry Co. SC. Can you tell us how you determined that? Was it due to the finding of a Louisa and mother Elvira living in McDowell Co. NC in the 1880 census, with son Charles who could have been brother of your Judge Sellers and the fact that in 1850 in Horry SC, there was a Joel Sellers with wife Elvira and daughter, Louisa? Or was it something you were told by your relatives? Also, anything more about Louisa, when she died, etc.? Are there any stories of her keeping Charles but not keeping Judge, and so on? Do you know that Louisa´s mother was named Elvira? Any info you have might help us figure out your family. Thanks, Linda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
