Marie, Linda Peacock has been working with Jack Sellers and me in regard to Jacks's Y-DNA test results and our common ancestor James Madison/Manson Sellers. She has been most helpful and we're excited to be making some connections. It does need to be brought to your attention that Jack's name should be corrected to "Jackie Leroy Sellers" in regard to his test results. I seem to recall there is another person that has posted as Jack Sellers, so this correction might prevent future confusion, as well as being accurate as to our Jack's correct name. Thank you for all your efforts in behalf of the Sellers forum, Carol Sellers Zajicek, great great grand daughter of James Madison/Manson Sellers **************Looking for love this summer? Hi Charmaine, This is great information about the history, geography, social ties and pass times of all of these people who were family, friends and neighbours. You´re fantastic! I will have to go back and make note of what I've seen on those two lines. Both perked my interest when I saw the names, since I have a daughter of the Vardry McBee in Lincoln Co., NC, (also held property in Spartanburg/Greenville Co., SC) {Martha Adalaine McBee b.1 May 1816 Lincoln Co., NC} who married Tench Coxe Carson b. 23 Jan 1810 Rutherford Co., NC - he was a son of Joseph McDowell Carson and Rebecca Wilson, dau. of James Hazzard Wilson and Rebecca Davidson, who moved to the area of Williamson Co., TN after the Revolution. James Hazzard Wilson was the son of Thomas Wilson and Katherine Carson. Katherine Carson being the sister of Col. John Hazzard Carson, of Burke/McDowell Co., NC, who married into the McDowell family of Burek/McDowell Co., NC. While this does not specifically involve the Sellers/Hall/Wilkerson group at that point, in a neighbor and historic context they do intersect. Choate's (Shoat) Ford was the principle crossing on the S. Holston river on the road that led from Morganton, Burke Co., NC into Washington District NC/TN and then into Virginia. This is the route that the "Overmountain men" took to and from the gathering at Sycamore Shoals to gather troops to march against the British at Kings Mountain (Battle 7 October 1780). The militia under Col. William Campbell of VA., Col. Evan Shelby who settled in what is now Sullivan Co., TN, and the militia under Col. John Sevier used this route to march to join Col. Charles McDowell's troops in Burke Co., NC. I have not idea at this point whether Robert Sellers or his older sons, or the Halls, were part of the Western counties (now TN militias who marched to King's Mountain. But something I consider a possibility. This route was also used by those in western NC as the easiest access into those Tennessee counties, and had been used by Daniel Boone as a direct route to the Cumberland Gap and into Kentucky. Sycamore Shoals was also a favorite gathering place for men in western NC to stage elaborate horse races. Sevier is well known for hosting these horse races, where heavy betting and drinking took place, and lasted for days. (If we described Col. John Sevier in more modern terms, the man liked to party.) This attracted men from all over the area, from Virginia to NC. There is record of one of the Choate's from Choate Ford, Sullivan Co. NC/TN being arrested and convicted of horse thievery for stealing a horse at one of the Sycamore Shoals horse races and then claiming he won the horse. John Sevier witnessed the incident and had him arrested. The McDowell's and their related family were considered great horsemen and breeders and didn't miss these races held at Sycamore Shoals. In a letter dated 16 May 1783 from John Hall to Micajah Merryman, et. al., in Baltimore Co., MD he writes: "If you had sent a full blooded horse out by Mr. Cox should have had many mares this spring. If you can send one of your colts this fall by Mr. Cox as he will be down after harvest. He will be of great demand for covering as full blood is in great esteem and not many in these parts." While this doesn't specifically address the horse racing passion the men of that area enjoyed, it does seem to suggest he wished to participate to a degree by at least using the thorough bred horse for stud. It is likely that the Hall and Sellers families were aware of the McDowell family prior to moving out of Sullivan Co., TN in the late 1780's to 1790 and resettling in Burke Co., NC where these family grouped were interacting more frequently. Where the Sellers and Halls settled in Old Burke Co., NC they're not far up the mountain from the families of John Carson and "Hunting" John McDowell, the first cousin of Col. Charles McDowell, et. al. As you mentioned these early settler families tend to swirl around each other and intermarry in subsequent generations! Over time I have just accepted that to find answers as I research these families I have to research numerous intersecting family lines. They are like following a Gordian knot and trying to unravel the secret to how to untie it..you follow one string and the next thing you know you are following another string and another and another and then you end up back where you started..so you follow a different route and the same thing happens all over again. I'll let you know if I find anything of use concerning the Vardry McBee and Ross groups in Tennessee records. Charmaine, This is quite fascinating to me. We just recently found some "evidence", not yet verified, if it ever can be verified, that the father of Rice Farrar Ross (a Rice F. Ross b. 1757 and d. 1819), 2 of whose children, md. Sellerses (Oliver Franklin Ross md. Margaret Minerva Sellers and Emily F. Ross md. John W. Sellers), was supposedly bd. in the Ragsdale Cmty in Coffee Co. TN, in a grave only marked with a rock. He d. 1819, in what would then have been Bedford Co. TN. Am of course, trying to confirm this in any way I can. According to an account by a Milner Echols, written in 1850, Rice Farrar Ross´s father (so possibly this Rice F. Ross, not confirmed), a "Mr. Ross" md. a daughter of "Old" Vardry McBee, whose name, Milner Echols did not know. Milner Echols´ account of his family history was quite rambling sometimes, but I have found that everything he said he knew, checks out. One thing he said that checked out, was that some of the associated families of "Old" Vardry McBee,! i.e. Echolses, Williamses and Andersons migrated to TN, very early. Also found that there was a William McBee in Franklin Co. TN in 1812. The Halls were also associated with my Sellers family, in that the sister of Jane Thompson (who md. James Sellers), Ruth Richardson Thompson, md. Joseph Buchanan, and 2 of their children md. Hall children. So, as we already know, these families were intertwined and wandered around together in the same circles and sometimes diverged and sometimes went back and forth from one place to another. Sorry for my own rambling and not documented account but sometimes we need to let our minds wander in seeking new paths for research and I think you are on to something here. We need to examine any "old" TN records we can find and also MD records and perhaps VA records. J - E Hall Envelope addressed to Micajah Merryman, Baltimore Co., MD I am hoping some of the great minds here on the Sellers list can help me unravel some of the questions this has created.... 1) Do you think John Hall and his family along with Moses Wilkerson did not meet the Sellers until they both moved to land in Sullivan Co, Washington District, NC(VA) (TN) after the Revolution? Apparently I have been looking in the wrong location for the parents of Moses Wilkerson! I'm now trying to discover the relationship between John Hall and the young Moses Wilkerson/Wilkinson. Why would John Hall have to make over his rights to Moses Wilkerson's land in Baltimore Co., MD? 2) Since no marriage bonds have been located for the marriages of Moses Wilkerson to Rebeckah Sellers, or Joshua Hall to Sarah Sellers (both estimated to have been about 1785/86,) could these marriages have actually taken place in Sullivan Co., NC(TN) and not in Burke Co., NC? 3) The Robert and John Sellers mentioned can't be the sons of Robert Seller, Sr - Robert and John who did not have families in 1783. This must be Robert Sellers (Sr). Is John Sellers possibly the brother of Robert Sellers...cousin..nephew....? There was a John Sellers listed in early Burke Co., NC records prior to Robert Sellers and his children, John Hall and his children, and Moses Wilkerson and his family appearing in Burke Co., NC. Could this be the link to Burke Co., NC? The letter isn't clear on whether the Robert and John Sellers families actually moved down to the opening lands in Georgia or not, and it opens up questions as to why all of them ended up in Burke Co., NC by 1790. While so many were moving west into the newly opening lands, they turn around and move eastward back into NC (pre-Revolutionary land). I find that curious. Some of the children don't head westward again for 15 to 20 years, if ever. This is a very circuitous route they took...no wonder they have been such a challenge to research. Interesting, Charmaine. I´ve just stumbled on a couple of other instances in my family lines, where we have been looking in the wrong place, for the people we were trying to find, so no wonder we couldn´t find them. Early TN (and GA) records are especially challenging to research. I did find a reference, which I have not read yet, called "Earliest Tennessee Land Records and Earliest Tennessee Land History" by Irene M. Griffey, that might be a helpful reference to try, as to locating any land records for these Sellers´s and Halls in early TN. Also, though I am sure you are aware of that, The MD State Archives has a nice searchable site, with full excerpts of land deeds, etc.. If you don´t beat me to it (finding the solution to this new puzzle), I´ll be in Houston and be going to the Clayton Library, which I found, has the TN book. Can also search other records there. Likewise should he sell the land by or with your consent then will I make over all my rights to the land unto him or them that is the purchaser of the same. Betsy joins in our love unto you. Jn. Hall The envelope is addressed to Micajah Merryman Baltimore Co., MD and noted on the envelope is that it is hand delivered by Moses Wilkinson. In a letter written 21 November 1783 Sullivan County, North Carolina "I am glad that Moses and Joshua has got down safe and that you would acquaint them that we received your letter on the same, and also that Robertson's has come back from Georgia and will start with their family over there in about three weeks from date. Robert and John Sellers is gone with their family's, the sound of Georgia is very extensive all over our parts. ..." J - E Hall Envelope addressed to Micajah Merryman, Baltimore Co., MD I am hoping some of the great minds here on the Sellers list can help me unravel some of the questions this has created.... I was recently contacted by a Hall researcher (she descends from Rev. Joshua and Sarah Sellers Hall >Moses Wilkerson Hall) who sent me copies of some letters written by John Hall to his relative Micajah Merryman in Baltimore Co., MD dated between 1779 (Washington Co., VA(TN), to 1783 (Sullivan Co, NC (TN). The letters are owned by John Hopkins Universtity as part of the Merryman Family -Micajah Merryman collection. There are a few references to Moses (Wilkerson) and Joshua (Hall) and one reference made to Robert and John Sellers. While I knew about the NC land grant to Robert Hall in 1784: 1784 - NC Grant #268 -Sullivan Co., NC/TN Sullivan Co., TN, DB 1, p. 278: State of North Carolina No. 268 To all to whom these presents shall come greeting Know ye that we for and in consideration of the sum of fifty shillings for every hundred acres hereby granted paid into our treasuary by Robert Sellers have given and granted and by these presents Do give and grant unot the said Robert Sellers a tract of land containing three hundred Acres lying and being in our County of Sullivan on the south side of holston River Begining at a white oak and sower wood on the River thence Due south one hundred and eighty pole to two white oaks John halls line Due west two hundred and Seventy pole to a stake thence Due north two hundred and fifty poles to a stake on the River thence up the River as it meanders to the Begining as by the plat hereunto annexed Doth appear together with all woods waters mines minerals hereditaments and appertenances to the said land belonging or appertaining to hold to the said Robert Sellers his heirs and assigns for ever yielding and paying to us such sums of money yearly or otherwise as our general assembly from time to time may Direct provided always that the said Robert Sellers shall cause this grant to be registered in the Registers of our said County of Sullivan within twelve months from the Date hereof otherwise the same shall be void and of none effect in testimony whereof we have caused these our letters to be made patent and our great to be hereunto affixed Witness Alexander Martin Esquire our govenor Captain general and Commander in Chief at New Bern the tenth Day of November in the Ninth year of our Independence and In the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty four By his Excellency Com'd Alex MartinJ Glasgow Secretary August 18th 1789 Reg'st Prior to reading these letters written by John Hall I was not sure the John Hall mentioned in the grant was the same John Hall who later appeared with the Sellers in Burke Co., NC. Some more dna tests here may help us. marie, iowa -----Original Message----- From: sellers-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:sellers-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Carol Herbert Sent: Sunday, July 05, 2009 11:08 PM To: sellers@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SELLERS] JAMES MANSON SELLERS 1831 Haywood Co.,NC dna test results Is the Isaac Sellers 1800 NC the son of James Sellers Jr. in Chatham County, N.C.? ________________________________ From: marie sellers hollinger <mari@netins.net> To: "SELLERS@rootsweb. com" <SELLERS@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 5, 2009 6:15:27 PM Subject: [SELLERS] JAMES MANSON SELLERS 1831 Haywood Co., NC dna test results LINDA PEACOCK has sent us the dna results of JACK SELLERS, son of Charley Sellers 1903, son of Nathan Elmore Sellers 1865, son of James Manson Sellers 1831 Haywood Co., NC. Marie, Thank you for posting the data for me, to the list, to my page and to the Y-DNA results page. Would like to mention that, according to the family group pages on my page, it is thought that James Manson Sellers, is thought to have been the son of James Sellers b. ABT 1796 NC and Jane Thompson b. 1797 Rutherford NC. From reading the Sellers pages it is thought that James was the son of John Sellers b. ABT 1758 NC + Margaret UNK and that John Sellers is thought to have been the son of Robert Sellers, Sr. d. 1800/1810 Burke Co. NC + Sarah. Jack and Lee have other perfect haplogroup (R1b) + 12 marker matches that fall into these family groups: 1) 14803, 23989 and 34253 (who is actually 2nd cousin of 14438, who is off by 1 marker at marker 19, where his is 13 and the others are 14). This family is thought to be David Sellers b. ABT 1760 > Young Sellers b. ABT 1789 NC > and so on... 2) 26552 (Warren) is of Robert Sellers, Sr. d. Burke Co. NC 1800/1810 > Robert Sellers b. 10 Mar 1765 NC and d. 2 Nov 1827 Washington Co. IN + Sarah Hall, etc.. 3) 41098 is of Laird Sellers b. ABT 1771 NC and d. 1862 MO.... The above is very sketchy as to the trees people have provided, so just a resume of sorts. What´s interesting is that these people, who have been speculated as to having been related, do appear to be. But as you say, more extensive tests are needed, and I agree that it might be better for all, to upgrade one or two at a time. As discussed previously on the list, upgrades should perhaps not be funded from the general fund, which might better be used by recruiting new lines. So, for a start, I´d personally be willing to sponsor an upgrade of Warren´s and Lee´s tests, in part or in full, if need be. I see that FTDNA has a NEW sale through July as to 37 marker tests and asked them if they would consider giving a bulk discount for upgrades from 12 markers up to 37 markers, for the same price difference. Have not heard from them yet, but expect to soon. Thank you Marie and everyone at the Sellers list, for all you do. LINDA, thanks for helping. These matches appear to all prove to Burke Co., NC and as much as I'd like to see the 37 marker tests, I also believe we should use the dna money for new tests. marie, iowa -----Original Message----- From: sellers-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:sellers-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Linda Peacock Sent: Monday, July 06, 2009 9:41 AM To: sellers@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SELLERS] JAMES MANSON SELLERS 1831 Haywood Co.,NC dna test results Marie, Thank you for posting the data for me, to the list, to my page and to the Y-DNA results page.
