    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: pscott1143 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.sellers/2253.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, The Thomas Sellers who founded the Cardmaking business was the brother of your Thomas's Grandfather (John Sellers b. 1739) Your Thomas was the son of William Sellers b. 1765 and Sarah (Sally, on monumental Inscription on Gravestone at Whitechapel, Cleckheaton) Sally was nee Tattersall. Thomas b. 1751 (brother of John b. 1739) founded the cardmaking business of Thomas Sellers and Sons, the first account book of which goes back to 1783 and continued in business until about 1935. The Company was listed as Thomas Sellers and Sons, cardmakers in Wyke in Baines's Directory and Gazetteer Directory of 1822. In his will (dated 1811) he left the business to his three surviving sons Robert, James and Thomas. Robert and James bought out Thomas' share and carried on the business.(info of will from Sellers descendant Beatrice McGlen) He was buried at Whitechapel 7th Jul 1813 aged 62. His headstone at Whitechapel Church Cleckheaton reads: "Thomas Sellers of Wike, who departed this life July 4th 1813 in the 63rd year of his age" I believe your Thomas was a Publican on the baptismal record of his son Thomas in 1839, but "Cardmaker" on the 1841 census. He was buried at Whitechapel on the 21st Oct 1850 aged 54. His headstone reads: "In memory of Thomas Sellers of White Chapel who died October 12th 1850 Aged 54 years In life respected and in death lamented Also Edwin son of the above who died December 5th 1852 in the 19th year of his age Also William Henry grandson of the above who died February 1st 1853 Aged 3 years In memory of Hannah Sellers, widow of the above who died May 8th 1869 aged 73 years and was interred near this stone. Her toils are past, her work is done And she is fully blest She fought the fight, the victory won And entered into rest" Hope this is of help, Pauline Scott (descendant of Thomas and John's eldest brother Robert Sellers b. 1737 and Sarah nee Scholefield) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. I´m not sure where the ca. birth date comes from. I wonder if it comes from the ca. date of birth of John Sellers of Saucon, PA? If the Margaret Sellers in Macon Co., NC in 1840 is the Margaret who md. John Sellers, son of Robert, Sr., she was b. 1760-1770. She could have been somewhat older than John but likely not much older, so that gives some sort of time frame. Yep. Think we need to search for whatever we can find in TN and unfortunately, early records are sparse there. Irene M. Griffey´s book, "Earliest Tennessee Land Records and Earliest Tennessee Land History" might provide some answers. Otherwise, for example, Bedford Co. TN´s Court house burned 1837/8 or so, and all court records for that Co. prior to 1837/8, were lost. So many complications. But if it were too easy it wouldn´t be as much fun figuring out. I also noticed something while I was looking through all my data. I hadn't followed all Robert Sellers, Jr.'s children very thoroughly. I just realized that Robert Sellers was married once before he married Sarah "Sally" Hall, 29 Apr 1793 in Burke Co., NC. The first 4 children are from the first marriage: Elizabeth 12 May 1785 Sarah 22 Mar 1787 Rebecca 4 Dec 1788 Ann 28 Mar 1790 The first child with Sarah Hall was John b. 13 Jun 1794 Burke Co., NC. In light of this, plus the reference made in the John Hall letters, dated 21 Nov. 1783, where he refers to "Robert and John Sellers is gone with their family", that he may have been referring to the sons of Robert Sellers, Sr. Which leads back to the question of whether the marriages of the Sellers children that a bond hasn't been found for in North Carolina records, such as Moses Wilkerson and Rebeckah Sellers, Joshua Hall and Sarah Sellers, Robert Sellers, Jr and the first unnamed wife, and possibly the marriage of John Sellers to possibly Margaret, may have taken place in Sullivan Co., TN. Unfortunately Sullivan Co, NC/TN records are scant from early haphazard record keeping, and it is also a "burned" county (from the Civil War) as was Burke Co., NC. Such a puzzle! 2. In a message dated 7/12/09 3:40:54 AM Eastern Daylight Time, lindapeacock@vip.cybercity.dk writes: > Margaret UNK + John Sellers b. abt. 1758 What is the birth year for John Sellers based on? If this is the John Sellers son of Robert Sellers, Sr, last found in Burke Co., NC, from census (1790 Jn'o Sellers 1 m over 16, 12 m und 16, 1 f, 1800 - John Sellers 4 m 0 to und. 10, 1 m 10 to und. 16, 1 m 26 to und. 45// 2 f o to und. 10, 1 f 26 to und. 45) If you compare it with the number of children, and ages of his other siblings who are married and in established households, he was most likely born around the same time frame as Robert Sellers, Jr whose household had 1 m over 16, and 5 females in 1790, Rebekah Sellers Wilkerson/Moses Wilkerson has 1 m over 16, 3 females, Sarah Sellers Hall/Joshua Hall who has 1 m. over 16, 2 m und. 16, and 1 female. Brother James Sellers has 1 m. over 16, 1 male under 16 and 4 females. Possibly James is older, but I don't know his birthdate. (Might help if we can every discover the year Robert Sellers, Sr was born and his wife and their marriage date.) Rebeckah Sellers Wilkerson born 25 Feb. 1765 Robert Sellers born 10 March 1766 Sarah Sellers Hall born appx. 1768 John possibly born before Rebeckah in 1763 - 64 or after Sarah in 1769-70. Charmaine ************** An Excellent Credit Score is 750. See Yours in Just 2 Easy Steps! 3. Okay, have now some some searching as to the Saucon, PA Sellers´s (Bucks and Northhampton Co. PA). I do NOT think they were related to John Sellers b. abt 1758 who md. Margaret UNK. and who had James Sellers b. abt 1790 who md. Jane Thompson >>> Jackie Leroy Sellers and Isaac Marion Sellers b. abt. 1800 who md. Jane Gibson >>> Lee Dale Sellers. 1. The Y-DNA tests of Jackie Leroy Sellers and Lee Dale Sellers match those of the Robert Sellers, Sr., d. Burke Co. NC 1800/1810 group and these people are R1b. This is also why I think besides expanding Lee´s test, we should also expand one of the Robert Sellers´ tests and preferably, that of Warren who is of Robert Sellers, Jr. who would have been uncle of James and Isaac Marion Sellers, Sr.. 2. The Saucon PA Sellers group appear to be represented by tests 14441, 16669, 32883, 42758 and possibly 14454, who all match and are I1. Some of these families mention a link back to Bucks Co. PA and some a link back to Germany. Furthermore, this link http://www.sellers-sellars-sollars-zellars.net/sellerspajaquett.htm (this is an extract of a book called Sellers Family of Pennsylvania and Allied Families, by Edwin Jaquett Sellers, 1925), and this correspondence http://newsarch.rootsweb.com/th/read/SELLERS/2005-10/1129348229 explains why I think that John Sellers b. abt. 1758 was not the son of Phillip Sellers who. d. 1808 in Upper Saucon PA, who had sons John and George who went to NC, and who were in NC when he d.. Son, John, d. abt. 1814 in Lincoln Co. NC and his will apparently mentioned brother George, sons G John and Henry Sellers. All that is follows from the links. Also the names in the PA group don´t quite match the Robert Sellers, Sr. group. The PA group has Conrad´s, and Francis or Frank´s and Ephriam´s and Georges and Henry´s. Those are not names used in the Robert Sellers group. 3. Marie and Lee, PS: In the 1830 US Census in Haywood Co. NC are: 367 John Sellers: 3 males (<5); 1 male (5-10); 1 male 15-20; 1 male 40-50; 1 female (<5); 1 female (5-10); 1 female (10-15) and 1 female 30-40. 377 Isaac Sellers: 1 male (<5); 2 males (5-10)(one of these would be John S. Sellers age 8; 1 male (20-30) = Isaac Sellers, Sr. b. 1800; 1 female (20-30) = Jane Gibson Sellers and on same page are a number of "Gipsoms" 378 James Sellers: 1 male (<5) = John Wesley Sellers b. 1828; 1 male (5-10) = Nathan B. Sellers b. 1821; 1 male (30-40) = James Sellers b. abt 1790; 1 female (5-10) = Margaret Minerva Sellers b. 1824 and 1 female (30-40) = Jane Thompson Sellers b. 1797. Just below is Nathan Thompson, Jane´s father. I think that John Sellers is likely the same as in Macon Co. NC in 1840 along with James and Margaret. In 1840, Isaac Sellers is still in Haywood Co. NC: 1 male (<5); 1 males (5-10); 1 male (10-15) (has John S. left the household age 18? while the other male is the other one age 5-10 in 1830?); 1 male (30-40) = Isaac Sellers b. 1800; 2 females (30-40) = Jane Gibson Sellers and another female. There are a number of Gibsons on the page. So far I have not found John Sellers and Margaret Sellers in 1820 or 1830. 2. Linda Peacock
    3. Marie and Lee, Re: Margaret UNK + John Sellers b. abt. 1758: In the 1840 US Census Macon Co. NC Page 3: James Sellars is listed with: 1 male (5-10) = James Manson Sellers age 9; 2 males (10-15) = John Wesley Sellers age 12 and unknown son; 1 male (40-50) = James Sellers; 2 females (< 5) = Rutha Elizabeth Sellers age 1 and Justiana Sellers age 5; one female (5-10) = Margaret Minerva Sellers and one female age (30-40) = Jane Thompson Sellers and must be an error as she should be 40-50. Son Nathan B. Sellers age 19 was not listed in the household. Just above James Sellars on p. 3 is Margaret Sellars with: 1 male (15-20); 1 male (40-50); 1 female (10-15); 1 female (15-20); 1 female (30-40) and one female (70-80) = Margaret. So Margaret was b. 1760-1770. We are thinking she was the wife of John Sellers and this is Margaret UNK. Looks like one of her children´s families was living with her in 1840, husband and wife and their children. Page 2: John Sellars is listed with: 1 male (10-15); 1 male (15-20); 1 male (40-50) = John Sellers; 1 female (10-15); 2 females (15-20) and one female (40-50). In 1820 James Sellers and Jane Thompson Sellers were likely living in Haywood Co. in household of Jane´s brother, Nathan Beers Thompson and in 1830, James and Jane Thompson Sellers were in Haywood Co. in their own household. This info is all on my page at http://www.sellers-sellars-sollars-zellars.net/lindapeacock.htm . This particular info is in the file named Jane Thompson´s descendants. Lee´s lineage if I understand correctly is: John Sellers b. abt 1758 + Margaret UNK (i.e. likely Margaret above, b. 1760-1770, living in Macon Co. NC in 1840) > Isaac Marion Sellers, Sr. b. 1800 NC, d. 1890 Gilmer Co. GA md. Jane Gibson 1st and Mary Minton 2nd > John S. Sellers b. Mar 1822 Haywood Co. NC, d. 1906 Gilmer Co. GA md. Mary Carolina Hemphill > Isaac Marion Sellers b. 1852 Gilmer Co. GA md. Lilly A. Josephine Moore > Robert Lee Sellers b. 1892 AR md. Elsie Brannon > Arthur Bud Lee Sellers b. 1915 Cherokee Co. 3. Lee, This is what I understood too, about your test, though I never heard about John Sellers being b. in PA. IF yours and our info is correct, your Isaac Marion Sellers would be the brother of our James Sellers, father of James Manson Sellers and so on. Both were supposedly sons of this John Sellers who was b. abt. 1758, but thought that was in NC, and he, in turn, was supposedly the son of Robert Sellers, Sr. who d. Burke Co. NC 1800/18010. Do you have some info from PA that we are not aware of? Would you consider expanding your 12 marker test to more markers at some point? I´m willing to pay in part or full, for the extended test but right now am finding FTDNA´s pricing policies unreasonable, so just a matter of holding out on them for now. People pay 99 dollars for a 12 marker test and then FTDNA has sales for a 37 marker test for 129 dollars, but NO discounts as to upgrading from 12 to 37 markers. Asked if they would do some kind of bulk discount but they won´t. Upgrade from 12 to 37 markers costs about 69 dollars. I don´t think that is fair. I want to continue to pressure FTDNA for a discount, if it were. But just asking if it is okay with you to have your test upgraded to 37 markers at some point as Jack Sellers of James Sellers, likely brother of Isaac Marion Sellers, matches you perfectly and has an extended test, though from another company, so not exactly corresponding to a 37 marker FTDNA test. I will have to go back and make note of what I've seen on those two lines. Both perked my interest when I saw the names, since I have a daughter of the Vardry McBee in Lincoln Co., NC, (also held property in Spartanburg/Greenville Co., SC) {Martha Adalaine McBee b.1 May 1816 Lincoln Co., NC} who married Tench Coxe Carson b. 23 Jan 1810 Rutherford Co., NC - he was a son of Joseph McDowell Carson and Rebecca Wilson, dau. of James Hazzard Wilson and Rebecca Davidson, who moved to the area of Williamson Co., TN after the Revolution. James Hazzard Wilson was the son of Thomas Wilson and Katherine Carson. Katherine Carson being the sister of Col. John Hazzard Carson, of Burke/McDowell Co., NC, who married into the McDowell family of Burek/McDowell Co., NC. While this does not specifically involve the Sellers/Hall/Wilkerson group at that point, in a neighbor and historic context they do intersect. Choate's (Shoat) Ford was the principle crossing on the S. Holston river on the road that led from Morganton, Burke Co., NC into Washington District NC/TN and then into Virginia. This is the route that the "Overmountain men" took to and from the gathering at Sycamore Shoals to gather troops to march against the British at Kings Mountain (Battle 7 October 1780). The militia under Col. William Campbell of VA., Col. Evan Shelby who settled in what is now Sullivan Co., TN, and the militia under Col. John Sevier used this route to march to join Col. Charles McDowell's troops in Burke Co., NC. I have not idea at this point whether Robert Sellers or his older sons, or the Halls, were part of the Western counties (now TN militias who marched to King's Mountain. But something I consider a possibility. This route was also used by those in western NC as the easiest access into those Tennessee counties, and had been used by Daniel Boone as a direct route to the Cumberland Gap and into Kentucky. Sycamore Shoals was also a favorite gathering place for men in western NC to stage elaborate horse races. Sevier is well known for hosting these horse races, where heavy betting and drinking took place, and lasted for days. (If we described Col. John Sevier in more modern terms, the man liked to party.) This attracted men from all over the area, from Virginia to NC. There is record of one of the Choate's from Choate Ford, Sullivan Co. NC/TN being arrested and convicted of horse thievery for stealing a horse at one of the Sycamore Shoals horse races and then claiming he won the horse. John Sevier witnessed the incident and had him arrested. The McDowell's and their related family were considered great horsemen and breeders and didn't miss these races held at Sycamore Shoals. In a letter dated 16 May 1783 from John Hall to Micajah Merryman, et. al., in Baltimore Co., MD he writes: "If you had sent a full blooded horse out by Mr. Cox should have had many mares this spring. If you can send one of your colts this fall by Mr. Cox as he will be down after harvest. He will be of great demand for covering as full blood is in great esteem and not many in these parts." While this doesn't specifically address the horse racing passion the men of that area enjoyed, it does seem to suggest he wished to participate to a degree by at least using the thorough bred horse for stud. It is likely that the Hall and Sellers families were aware of the McDowell family prior to moving out of Sullivan Co., TN in the late 1780's to 1790 and resettling in Burke Co., NC where these family grouped were interacting more frequently. Where the Sellers and Halls settled in Old Burke Co., NC they're not far up the mountain from the families of John Carson and "Hunting" John McDowell, the first cousin of Col. Charles McDowell, et. al. As you mentioned these early settler families tend to swirl around each other and intermarry in subsequent generations! Over time I have just accepted that to find answers as I research these families I have to research numerous intersecting family lines. They are like following a Gordian knot and trying to unravel the secret to how to untie it..you follow one string and the next thing you know you are following another string and another and another and then you end up back where you started..so you follow a different route and the same thing happens all over again. I'll let you know if I find anything of use concerning the Vardry McBee and Ross groups in Tennessee records.
