When you are searching 1900 Albemarle County, Virginia, only put in the search engine the last name of Scan* and born Virginia, and you will find several Scantling families but no Frederick W. Scantling was found of the proper age. When I have time I will try looking at the actual census records page by page. There is a possible grandmother born 1833 still living in 1900. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Sellers" <muckham11@yahoo.com> To: <sellers@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 08, 2009 11:03 PM Subject: Re: [SELLERS] Scantling-Sellers info needed Charles W. Genealogy.com lists a Fred Scantling in Kentucky in 1900, whom I can't find on Ancestry.com. I don't subscribe to that database, so I can't see any other information. Maybe he was in Kentucky for a while. I did notice that he and his wife Carrie were in Dayton, OH in 1910. Charles W. Scantling, possible/potential father of Frederick William Scantling, was listed as age 70 on the 1930 Census for White Hall District, Albemarle County, Virginia. Since an Obituary for Charles would be more recent, it might be worth hunting for his obit as well to see if any and all children were listed. The Local Genealogy societies, usually located at libraries, collect ALL this info. Some on line now. COUNTY/STATE USGENWEB should get you close to an address. Many you write and a very small donation keeps them happy. marie, iowa -----Original Message----- From: sellers-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:sellers-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Beverly Taylor Sent: Tuesday, September 08, 2009 7:43 PM To: sellers@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SELLERS] Scantling-Sellers info needed I don't know about others, but I have had a ton of luck getting obits by calling the local libraries in the cities that I am finding people died. In addition to Frederick Scantling there were two others (from the WW I & II draft cards) born in Crozet, Virginia that may be brothers. Harry Randolph Scantling, 15 Oct 1891, Crozet, Virginia Jennings Scantling, born 29 Aug 1896, Crozet, Virginia (His WW II card shows "Hofpmon" as a middle name) I may be going off track here on the Sellers list. Can't find either of them in 1900. Unfortunately, my source(s) for obits is rather non-existent, and I have been unable to find anything for them on the net. One of these days I'll probably have to pry open my wallet and get an Ancestry subscription, but for now I don't have one. And, I haven't found a good source for obits elsewhere online. I don't know about others, but I have had a ton of luck getting obits by calling the local libraries in the cities that I am finding people died. An occasional $5 charge can get a lot of obits with the death dates known.
Well, that's a really good idea. Unfortunately, my source(s) for obits is rather non-existent, and I have been unable to find anything for them on the net. One of these days I'll probably have to pry open my wallet and get an Ancestry subscription, but for now I don't have one. And, I haven't found a good source for obits elsewhere online. Jim, Funny you should post this with such excellent timing. I had pieced together some info and came to the conclusion that Charles W. Scantling had married Mildred A. Ladd about 1879. My current working theory is that Charles W. Scantling and Mildred A. Ladd could indeed be the parents of Frederick William Scantling. I just cannot find the smoking gun that either shows this or disproves this with any certainty. One of Frederick Scantling's grandsons told me that Frederick had at least 4 sisters. Of the four, two were named Lydia and Florence Ethel. LDS records show that a "Lydia Scantling" was born in Albemarle County, Virginia, on May 27, 1881, to "Chs. W. and M. Scantling". LDS records also show that an "Ethel Scantling" was born in Albemarle County, Virginia, to "Chs. & Milly Scantling" in 1889. Frederick William Scantling was born on January 20, 1887, in Albemarle County, Virginia. I believe that Charles W. Scantling and Mildred A. Ladd may have been his parents. I have found evidence that Mildred A. (Ladd) Scantling died on or about March 5, 1891, and Charles subsequently remarried to Margaret "Maggie" Graves in 1894. However, I cannot find Charles & family on the subsequent 1900 Census, and I cannot find any of his supposed children on that census either. I think the marriage info is excellent and we're on the right track. Just need the one sole piece of info definitively tying Frederick William Scantling as being a son of Charles W. Scantling and wife Mildred A. Ladd ... or not. Carrie's obit does indeed state that she was born on October 2, 1889, however, that was in error. She was born on that date in 1880, not 1889. Plus, it's kind of difficult to be 84 years old in 1965 with a birth year of 1889. I have yet to locate Frederick on any record prior to the 1910 Census, although I do know that Fred and Carrie were married on the homestead of her father in Churchville, Augusta County, Virginia, on February 10, 1909. I guess we're down to a birth record or their marriage record being located as opportunities to find out Fred's parents. Carrie married Frederick William Scantling on February 10, 1909, at the home of her parents in Churchville, Augusta County, Virginia. I do not know where the Marriage License was obtained. However, given that they were married in Augusta County, it's more than likely that the License was obtained there. Perhaps there is a Marriage Record for them in Augusta County and possibly it was name/list Fred's parents? Frederick William Scantling was born on January 20, 1887, in Albemarle County, Virginia. His World War I Draft Registration card listed the specific town in Albemarle in which he was born as "Crozet" (pronounced Kro-zay). There were two Scantling families in that area into the 1930s. One family, that of Charles W. Scantling, possibly could've been Fred's father. One of Fred's grandsons recently stated that Fred had at least 4 or 5 sisters; Mildred Minnie, Lydia, Ethel, Hattie, and Luttie. 1880 Census records for Albemarle County, Virginia, list the household of "Chs W. Scaustine" with wife "Milly" and daughter, "Minna A.". A look at the actual census page shows the last name to have indeed been "Scantling". A birth record via Familysearch.org show that a "Lydia Scantling" was born on May 27, 1881, in Albemarle County, Virginia, to "Chs W. Scantling" and wife "Milly". Another records shows that an "Ethel Scantling" was born in 1889 to "Chs W. Scantling" and wife "Milly". So, it's possible that Fred's father was Charles W. Scantling, however, I have found nothing to confirm this. Charles W. Scantling does not appear on the 1900 Census, at least not that I can find. Per the 1880, 1910, 1920, & 1930 censuses, Charles W. Scantling was born circa 1860 in Virginia. On those censuses, he was always listed in Albemarle County, Virginia. I believe he was the son of William A. Scantling and Elizabeth Clark. C. W.. Scantling appears on the 1910 Census for Albemarle County, Virginia, with wife, Maggie, and children Jennings, Nora, and Norman. Charles W. Scantling appears on the 1920 Census for Albemarle County, Virginia, with wife, Maggie, and children Jennings, Nora, and Norman. Charlie W. Scantling appears on the 1930 Census for Albemarle County, Virginia, as widowed with sons Jennings and Norman living in the household. Daughter Nora had married Daniel O'Conell Bishop. If Charles was indeed Fred's father, then it appears that 1st wife "Milly" possibly died and Charles then remarried to Maggie. Unfortunately, I cannot for the life of me locate Charles W. Scantling on the 1900 Census to see who is listed in his household, specifically Frederick William Scantling.. Frederick William Scantling died in Riverside County, California, on June 4, 1973, at the age of 86. I have no sources for checking for an Obituary.. If someone has access to Obits, perhaps Fred's obit from 1973 can be obtained and maybe his parents are listed? Family bible records kept by Fred's wife, Carrie Holland (Sellers) Scantling, do not list the names of Fred's parents. Darn it! Scantling on the 1900 Census to see who is listed in his household, specifically Frederick William Scantling. Frederick William Scantling died in Riverside County, California, on June 4, 1973, at the age of 86. I have no sources for checking for an Obituary.. If someone has access to Obits, perhaps Fred's obit from 1973 can be obtained and maybe his parents are listed? It is much appreciated. Marie & all, Carrie Holland Sellers was the 14th of 14 children born to Jerome Howard Brown Sellers (Nov. 14, 1825 - Feb. 27, 1910) and Margaret Rebecca Bell (Nov. 2, 1832 - June 17, 1907). Carrie was born in Churchville, Augusta County, Virginia, on October 2, 1880, and died in Riverside County, California, on June 2, 1965. C. W. Family bible records kept by Fred's wife, Carrie Holland (Sellers) Scantling, do not list the names of Fred's parents. Darn it! I'm wondering if anyone with access to Ancestry records can lend me a hand. Frederick William Scantling was born on January 20, 1887, presumably in Augusta County, Virginia, but it may have been in neighboring Albemarle County, Virginia. Fred married Carrie Holland Sellers on February 10, 1909, in Churchville, Augusta County, Virginia. After a brief move to Dayton, Ohio, in 1910, they had returned "home" to Augusta County, Virginia, by 1917 when "Frederick Wm.. Scantling" filled out his World War I Draft Registration card. I cannot find Fred on the 1900 Census and have been totally unable to identify his parents. Fred and Carrie had one son, Frederick Holland Scantling, who in turn had 4 children. I have spoken with the 4 grandchildren, and they are just as stumped. The Family Bible kept by Carrie Holland (Sellers) Scantling oddly did not list the name of Fred's parents either. I would truly appreciate any assistance and/or record look-ups by those with access that can unravel this mini-mystery and identify the names of Frederick William Scantling's parents. Thanks! Oh wow ... while the name Samuel Sellers jumped out at me because that's the name of my great-great-grandfather, of course it's not the same one. According to the Pennsylvania Historical sign, the house was built around 1684, and my direct line was still in Germany at that time (and going by the surname of Soller). I'm sure there's a hook-in somewhere along the line ... but here's another website I found: http://udhistory.org/index.html The sellershall.org Friends of Sellers Hall website is linked from this page too. Their donation page says "under construction", but their email is: sellershall@gmail.com . The National Trust for Historic Preservation's website has the story at the bottom of the column on this page: http://www.preservationnation.org/magazine/2009/september-october/transitions.html http://www.philly.com/inquirer/local/20090329_A_17th-century_survivor_is_imperiled.html In the article's photo, you can see the apse of the church in the background. Oooh, I start to get personal about things like this. This house can't be allowed to continue to rot; it truly DOES need to be restored! It is my hope and prayer that something will to be worked out with the archdiocese, so that this can be preserved one way or another. Thanks for the heads-up on this, all! - Shari
