Mike, Georgia, Marie and all--- The cryptic citation ("WASH POST WASH DC") about Jerome Sellers very likely means there is an obituary or other article in the Washington Post newspaper concerning Jerome Sellers' death in 1910. Can anyone suggest a month or even a season and I will effort finding it? The Post was founded in 1877, and was under the ownership of an Ohioan, John McLean, owner of the Cincinnati Enquirer, during that period. Frank Sellers Falls Church, VA
The birth date should have read 04 March 1897. George W. Sellers (12 Aug 1871 - 19 June 1950) did remain in Augusta County, Virginia, in the Churchville area his entire life. I'd like to find out more about the 3 brothers mentioned in the earlier email(s); Samuel Howard Sellers, John Newton Sellers, and William Arthur Sellers. Samuel Howard Sellers went to South Dakota, but I do not know when nor where exactly he settled there. A family picture of Jerome and Margaret Sellers from circa 1907 had the entire family in it, including Samuel Howard, John Newton, and William Arthur. The picture was taken at the family farm outside of Churchville, VA. Since Margaret died in 1907 and then Jerome in 1910, I'd guess the boys remained in Virginia until at least Feb. 1910 when Jerome died. One clue could be that Samuel Howard's eldest son, Jerome Bruce Sellers, could be found owning a farm in Mt. Vernon, Davison County, South Dakota in county records in 1967 and was still on that farm when my grandfather and I visited him in 1981. That being said, I would guess that perhaps Samuel Howard Sellers, Jerome's father, had originally settled on that farm in Mt. Vernon, S.D. and that perhaps when Samuel Howard died in 1940 he deeded it to son, Jerome. But, that's only a guess. I have no proof whatsoever to back that guess up and no copies of a will of any kind. SAMUEL HOWARD SELLERS and Clara May BRUCE were married 20 November 1895 in (I'm assuming) Augusta County, Virginia. They had the following children which (again I'm assuming) were all born in Augusta County, VA. 1) Jerome Bruce - (4 Mar 1897 - ca 1984); Bruce committed suicide on the farm in Mt. Vernon, S.D. a couple of years after we last visited him. Bruce married (1) Nora Eva Dunham; (2) Evelyn Patterson 2) Mary Elizabeth - (27 July 1898 - ?); married Harlow Gilbert Johnson on 14 Feb. 1924. Lived in Madison, S.D. She died in the 1980's of natural causes. 3) Leona Marie - (9 October 1899 - ?); married Glen Hartman on 19 Dec. 1931. Lived in Hot Springs, S.D. She died in the 1980's of natural causes. 4) Arena Lucille - 21 Sept 1901 - ?); married Charles Clement Svoboda on 28 July 1926. Lived in Clarenson, Illinois. She died in the 1980's of natural causes. 5) Jessie May - (10 May 1903 - 2 Mar 1905) 6) Robert Lee - (18 Jan 1905 - 26 May 1937); married Nora Verda Brown in November 1933. Lived in Yankton, S.D. Again, I'm guessing that the farm in Mt. Vernon, S.D. is where Samuel Howard Sellers moved to after leaving Virginia. When Samuel died in 1940, Jerome Bruce was his only surviving son and would thus have been the one to whom the farm was deeded to. Clara had died in 1913 and Samuel Howard's second wife, Fannie Gulton, had died May 30, 1928. Thus, there was no spouse to leave anything to. JOHN NEWTON SELLERS (13 Jan 1869 - 7 Aug 1945) married Gertrude Lowell on 7 February 1901. I'm assuming that they were married in Augusta County, VA. No idea when they went to Iowa nor where in Iowa that they settled though one of the daughters was living in Emmettsburg, Iowa in 1981 when I met her. Georgia Fletcher's earlier 1930 Census info shows John and Gertrude living in Scranton (Greene County) Iowa. Could be they originally settled and stayed in Greene County and daughter(s) went to Emmettsburg after married ...? John and Gertrude had the following children that I know of. (There could be more than I'm not aware of) 1) Margaret Virginia - (18 Feb 1902 - ?); married Morris Burk Whitiver on 19 Feb 1943. 2) Marguerite Allison - (16 July 1907 - ?); married John Maaks on 14 Feb 1936. WILLIAM ARTHUR SELLERS (6 Mar 1870 - Feb 1935) married Ida Harrell on 3 October 1900 in (again I'm assuming) Augusta County, Virginia. No idea when they went to Iowa nor where in Iowa they settled though Georgia's earlier 1930 Census info shows William and Ida in the Scott Township, Madison County, Iowa. Unknown if that's where they initially settled or if they went to Scott Township, Madison County later on. I assume that William went to Iowa about the same time that John did. I do not have any record nor any info as to any children being born to William Arthur and Ida Harrell. Sellers Family Bible also comes up empty on this as well. Again, I'm interested in finding out where these Sellers ended up/were buried and in finding out more about them. Though I obviously didn't get to meet the 3 sons, I did get the pleasure of meeting most of their descendents listed here along with some of their grandchildren. Would like to know more about these 3 sons of Jerome Howard Brown and Margaret R. (Bell) Sellers after they moved from Virginia and to hear from any descendents, too, that might be lurking out there :-) Thanks! Michael after I had a county in South Dakota, I was able to locate Samuel H. Sellers in 1930 Davison County, South Dakota census. 1930 Davison County, South Dakota Mount Vernon Township, District 13 enumerated on April 17, 1930 HH#24 Samuel H. Sellers, head, M, W, 65, widowed, age of first marriage age 29, VA, VA, VA; J. Bruce Sellers, son, M, W, 33, married age 33, IA, VA, IA (so in 1897 Samuel was in Iowa; need to try 1900 Iowa which is not indexed) farmer; Eva Sellers, daughter-in-law, 36, marriaged age 36; IL, IL, IL The name was difficult to read so the search engine does not pick up the Sellers name. Sellen might pick it up. Georgia

Frank, Thanks for chiming in! Excellent and interesting info! Jerome Howard Brown Sellers was born 25 Nov 1825 and died 27 Feb 1910. He was buried in the Green Hill Cemetery in Churchville (Augusta County) Virginia. If there was an Obit or other article in the newspaper, I would be most certain that his name would've been listed as Jerome H.B. Sellers and not the full, drawn out version. I can't imagine right off why an obit or other article of him would've been in the Washington Post newspaper, but it certainly is worth a look. Many thanks for offering to search! Can anyone suggest a month or even a season and I will effort finding it? Georgia/Marie, This is correct. Marie, Yes, this is 'my family'. Jerome and Margaret SELLERS were my Great Great Grandparents. The George Sellers, age 8, that is listed on the Census was my Great Grandfather, George W. Sellers, who eventually was deeded the farm from Jerome. George's only son, Whitfield T. Sellers, was my grandfather who passed away May 6, 2002 at the age of 94. Whitfield had gotten the farm when George passed in 1950. The "Howard, John, and Willie" listed on the 1880 Census is the Samuel Howard, John Newton, and William Arthur SELLERS in question. It is unclear when these 3 sons moved to the midwest ... Samuel Howard to South Dakota while John Newton and William Arthur went to Iowa. I have a family picture of Jerome, Margaret, their children and grandchildren taken at the house on their farm outside of Churchville, Augusta County, Virginia in what I believe was in early Spring, 1907. Samuel Howard, John Newton, and William Arthur are all present in the picture with the rest of the family. Thus, I believe their migration to the Iowa and Dakota territories was not only after 1907 but was probably even after June 1910 when father Jerome Howard Brown SELLERS died. A check of the 1910 Augusta County Virginia Census could possibly confirm (or deny) that. As for the 1900 Census, Jerome and Margaret should still be found on the same farm outside of Churchville in Augusta County, Virginia. Jerome got the farm from his father, John Conrad Sellers, and then passed it on to his own son, George W. Sellers. I'm not familiar with the "1910 STAUNTON, ?? , WASH POST, WASH DC" reference nor with the Staunton County reference that has been made. Jerome H.B. and Margaret R. (Bell) SELLERS lived on the farm in Churchville until their deaths, and both are buried in the Green Hill Cemetery in Churchville, Virginia. I believe Staunton County was once the area immediately surrounding the now-independent city of Staunton. However, that area is no longer "Staunton County". Georgia, No, Samuel Howard Sellers didn't divorce Clara. Clara May (Bruce) SELLERS, daughter of Richard and Judith Amelia (Keith) BRUCE, died on May 16, 1913. It is assumed that since both of Clara's parents were born in Kentucky that she was as well. Thus, neither of the Census records from 1920s for the two "Clara Sellers" are for her. The fact that Clara was born May 1, 1864, which would have made her age 56 for the 1920 Census, also shows that these two Census records aren't for her. While in town, I reviewed an exhibit at the Big Springs Museum in Caledonia, Livingston County, New York which profiled African American families that migrated from Culpeper, VA between 1870-1900. Some of the names included in the exhibit were COLES, BANKS, WILSON, NELSON, BENTLEY, MICHEAUX, ALEXANDER, SHELTON, CARPENTER, SIMMS and POLES. I am researching the SELLERS, PRICE, LEWIS and WHITE families in Culpeper, VA and Livingston County, NY. If your family migrated from Culpeper, VA to Livingston County, New York, I can put you in contact with the families of the same surname. There is a very rich African-American history in the Livingston County area and the local families are very nice. Please feel free to forward this message to those who might be interested.
