    1. [SELLERS] Sellers in Augusta County, Virginia

    3. 1880 Augusta County, Beverly Manor Township, Virginia Jacob Shirey, W, M, 55, farmer, VA; Lucy A. Shirey, W, F, 57, VA Michael, you said you could not find what happened to Elizabeth Magadelene Sellers that married Jacob Shirey. I would venture to say that she has died by 1880 and Jacob is married to a Lucy A. Unknown. I'll try earlier census records and see if he is married to Elizabeth M. Sellers. Elizabeth Magadelene Sellers born March 1823, Augusta County, Virginia, is a sister to Jerome H. B. Sellers, children of John Conrad Sellers and Catherine Brown. Georgia

    3. Georgia, I sure can clarify that :-) First off, Jerome H.B.'s son was Theodore Epps Sellers (30 Aug 1876 - 3 Jan 1938). My initial entry into my own database incorrectly listed him as "Thomas", hence the error on WorldConnect. Unfortunately, since I'm not all that experienced with doing updates to the records uploaded there, I haven't been able to update the WorldConnect record and thus correct erroneous family info. That original record was found in my Grandmother's family history which she put together in 1975. Since the record of the name supposedly was taken from the Sellers Family Bible, I didn't think to question it. However, I did question its validity once I saw the Census records myself awhile back. Only in the last couple of months when I found his gravestone in the Scottsville Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Albemarle County, Virginia, was I able to 100% prove that his name was Theodore and not Thomas. Given Jerome's penchant for naming sons after his own brothers, I should've known the name would be Theodore and not Thomas. Theodore Epps Sellers is buried with his second wife, Sallie Thomas. Unsure where his first wife, Dalia Montgomery, is buried. You are correct as well that Jerome had a brother who was also named Theodore Sellers. Theodore Napoleon Sellers (12 May 1830 - 26 Jan 1918) married Jane Dunkum and had 6 children. To the best of my knowledge, Dr. Theodore N. Sellers was the last living member of the family at the time of his death in 1918. The only sibling I can't account for is Elizabeth Magdalene Sellers (March 1823 - ?), who married Jacob Shirey. After her marriage to Shirey, they both pretty much dropped off the face of the planet, so to speak. Hope that helps :-) Michael -----Original Message----- From: Georgia Fletcher [mailto:chick@blzwire.com] Sent: Thursday, October 09, 2003 12:13 PM To: SELLERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SELLERS] Jerome H. The census records call him Theodore Sellers, who also had an uncle Theodore Sellers, brother to Jerome H. B. Sellers. This is all according to census records. Can you clarify? Thanks, Georgia

    3. Georgia, Thanks again for the info. Interesting how the name appears and its various spellings over time. Thanks for taking a look. Much appreciated! Yes, my line of Sellers is of German descent. From what we can tell, the family line is traced as far back as Heinrich Zeller (17 Aug 1704 - ca 1773) and wife Anna Maria, who came to America from Germany in 1738. Heinrich began appearing in Virginia in the Elkton and McGaheysville area in late 1749 - early 1750 on land records as "Henry Seller". Most notably, he is listed in the Peaked Mountain Church records as the baptismal sponsor for several of his grandchildren in the early 1750's as well. I'm thankful that his son-in-law, John Jacob Nicholaus, is the apparent author of these early records. Hope that wasn't too long-winded of an answer ... :-) Michael Sellers -----Original Message----- From: Georgia Fletcher [mailto:chick@blzwire.com] Sent: Thursday, October 09, 2003 10:16 AM To: SELLERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [SELLERS] Samuel Howard Sellers It was written as Zellers in 1920 Greene County, Iowa for John Newton Sellers. I still cannot find Samuel Howard Sellers in 1920. Are your Sellers of German descent? This is certainly them. No doubt about it. Am I reading this correctly in that the name was listed as "Zellers" for the 1920 Greene County, Iowa Census? That's the first I've seen or heard of the name being used as "Zellers" instead of as "Sellers" by that generation of the family. Though it originated as "Zeller", its been some form of "Sellers" without a 'Z' since the late 1700's.... 3. Want to pass along that I located the burial location of Robert Lee Sellers, son of Samuel Howard Sellers and Clara M. Bruce. Robert is buried in the Mt. Vernon City Cemetery in the Mt. Vernon Township, Davison County, S.D., same as his father, mother, and step-mother who I listed earlier. I missed his record the first time around as it is spelled as "Sellars", with an 'a' instead of with an 'e'. Robert's info reads as "Sellars, Robert L, Age 32, 1905 - 1937, buried in Block/Lot, 54-7". Also buried in the Mt. Vernon City Cemetery is Nora Eva (Dunham) Sellers, first wife of Samuel Howard Sellers' oldest son, Jerome Bruce Sellers. Her info reads as "Sellars, Nora E., Age 72, 1892 - 1965, buried in Block/Lot, 54-7". Again, hope this is helpful to others and not just a boring read ... The following info is found for them from the cemetery: LNAME FNAME MNAME AGE BIRTH DEATH BLK/LOT SELLERS Frances 49 1879 1928 69-2 SELLERS Clara May 49 1864 1913 69-2 SELLERS Samuel H 75 1865 1940 69-2 Notes for Frances Sellers show that her maiden name was Cullen and that she was the daughter of "Daniel & __(Wynant)". 3. Georgia, Perhaps you have already answered this, but I guess I missed it. If so, please overlook my ignorance. Wondering if you had a chance to look or had found additional Census info for the 3rd brother, John Newton Sellers and wife F. Gertrude Lowell in Iowa. I see below where you kindly forwarded the info you found for them from the 1930 Greene County, Iowa, Census. It appears that Samuel Howard was in Iowa perhaps as early as 1895. We found William Arthur as a laborer in Madison County Iowa on the 1900 Census. So, at least two of the brothers were in Iowa during that time. Now, I've only seen the 1930 Census info for John Newton and Gertrude being in Greene County but haven't see anything else pointing to where they were earlier than that. I suspect they, too, were in Madison County early on but have no proof as of yet. Gertrude certainly was as her State of Birth is listed as Iowa. John and Gertrude married on 7 Feb 1901, so they will appear apart until the 1910 Census. Beginning on the 1910 Census, they should have two daughters with them, Margaret Virginia (born 18 Feb 1902) and Marguerite Allison (16 July 1907). I'm guessing that John was in Iowa by the time of the 1900 Census but again have no proof to back that up. I apologize in advance if I'm being quite the pain on this. I very much appreciate the help and info so far. It has meant a great deal. My Great Great Grandparents, Jerome Howard Brown Sellers (14 Nov. 1825 - 27 Feb. 1910) and Margaret R. Bell (2 Nov. 1832 - 17 June 1907) were both born in Augusta County, Virginia and had 14 children. Three of the children left Virginia and moved to the midwest. Samuel Howard Sellers (17 Feb. 1865 - 2 Aug. 1940) married (1) Clara M. Bruce and (2) Fannie Gulton and lived in South Dakota. Samuel and Clara had 6 children that settled in Mt. Vernon, Madison, Hot Springs, and Yankton, South Dakota and Clarenson, Illinois. John Newton Sellers (13 Jan. 1869 - 7 Aug. 1945) married Gertrude Lowell and lived in Iowa. John and Gertrude had at least two children, and they settled in and around Emmettsburg, Iowa. William Arthur Sellers (6 Mar. 1870 - Feb. 1935) married Ida Harrell. I don't have a record of any children nor where exactly that William Arthur Sellers and Ida Harrell settled in Iowa. Travelling in 1981 with my grandfather Whitfield T. Sellers, who's father George W. Sellers was a brother to the three sons listed above, I had the pleasure of meeting most of the offspring of these sons. I'd love to hear from anyone who might be a descendant of these sons. I have quite a bit of info on the offspring of these sons of Jerome H.B. and Margaret R. Bell Sellers but not much info on the final resting place of the sons nor really anything about their life. Michael Sellers

    3. I was thinking the same thing in terms of Boyd possibly being in the military during that time. I haven't tried finding WWI draft registration records in Virginia before. Are there any online sources readily available that you know of? By the way, in the earlier message I called James Montgomery Sellers (1837 - 1871) an "older brother" to my Great Great Grandfather, Jerome H.B. Sellers. I misstated. That should have read "younger brother" as Jerome was the oldest child in the family. Both are buried in the Augusta Stone Church cemetery, New section, in Ft. Defiance, (Augusta County), Virginia. We are in the process of building a wonderful web site for the ACPA, which will debut in a presentation at the Cemetery Workshop/Conference on Nov. 1. This site will be dedicated to sharing all kinds of material on PRESERVING, RESTORING AND CONSERVING Alabama Cemeteries. It is CHOCK-FULL of all kinds of GREAT things. Many of Alabama's cemeteries are being lost to the elements of mother nature, neglect and vandalism. The ACPA is working "hand in hand" with the Alabama Historical Commission to make sure that you have all the information you need to help preserve Alabama's Cemetery Heritage. One of the main missions of the ACPA is to encourage individuals, families and community groups to ADOPT a cemetery and take steps to help restore and preserve it. Issues on monument theft and vandalism are covered, as well as steps to take to ADOPT a cemetery. The site will have articles and "step by step" instructions, not only on the techniques of preserving and repairing cemeteries and grave markers, but also on the processes of establishing a non-profit Cemetery Association in Alabama, including by-laws, Articles of Association, and how and who to submit these to, so you can preserve your cemeteries for all time. Much of this information may be adapted to cemetery plights throughout the nation. Also a section on the Alabama Legal Code pertaining to laws that address the protection of cemeteries. AND VERY IMPORTANTLY, the ACPA has established an on-line CEMETERY REGISTER - A method/form for you to REGISTER cemeteries and burial surveys with the ACPA ON-LINE!. These REGISTERED Cemeteries will be recorded in the ACPA database, not only as a method to document them, but will be accompanied by a searchable database, so the guests to the ACPA web site may search cemeteries by name and county. It is the goal of the ACPA to REGISTER every cemetery in the state of Alabama. Once you register a cemetery, you may return to your original registration and up-date it with additional information as you discover it. We will also have a BURIAL LISTING database that will allow individuals to submit their cemetery burial surveys, also searchable by name, cemetery and county. ALL OF THIS will be presented at the Alabama Cemetery Workshop Conference on Nov. 1. Meanwhile, please visit the site and sign our GUESTBOOK to be notified when the full site will be fully operable and to receive further information about the Conference and ACPA Membership. http://www.alabama-cemetery-preservation.com or http://www.alcpa.net LAST BUT NOT LEAST! become an ACPA COUNTY REPRESENTATIVE! The ACPA is establishing a County Representative to act as a liaison for the ACPA in each County. We have JUST opened these volunteer positions up and they are GOING FAST! If you have Internet access and email and live in an Alabama county that you would like to represent, and are interested in preserving and recording the cemeteries in your county and would like to know more about this very important volunteer position, please contact me, or the ACPA County Coordinator, Ted Urquhart.
