Georgia, I was able to get a transcribed copy of Jerome Bruces Sellers' obit over this past weekend, which I'm including here for anyone interested in reading it. It contains answers to some of the questions I/we were searching for in terms of where the family went to in Iowa after leaving Virginia along with when Samuel Howard Sellers took the family from Iowa to South Dakota. Daily Republic, Mitchell, SD, March 9, 1982 Bruce Sellers Mt.Vernon - Funeral services for Jerome Bruce Sellers, 85, will be Wednesday, March 10 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Mt.Vernon. Burial will be in the Mt.Vernon cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. Mr. Sellers died at Mt. Vernon March 7. He was born March 4, 1897 in Winterset, Iowa to Samuel Howard and Clara May Sellers. In 1910 he came to Mt.Vernon where he had since resided. In May 1930 he married Eva Dunham. She died in 1965. In 1968 he married Evelyn Patterson. He cared for his father until his death in 1940 and for his mother-in-law, Mrs. Dunham, until her death a few years later. He was of tender disposition and loved his family and friends. During World War I he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the United Methodist Church at Mt. Vernon, the Odd Fellows Lodge and the Mt.Vernon American Legion. Survivors include his widow; three sisters, Mary Johnson, Madison; Leona Hartman, Hot Springs; and Lucile Svoboda, Clarendon Hills, IL; and several nieces. Georgia, After checking my notes, I was able to locate the identity of the Thomas A. Sellers and Oscar D. Sellers who are listed as grandsons in the household of Mary M. Gilmore. Both Thomas and Oscar are related to me as cousins. We share the same ancestor in Heinrich Zeller, however, that's where the lines diverge. I descend from Heinrich via his son, Adam Sellers. Thomas and Oscar descend from Heinrich via his son, Peter Sellers. Thomas (A)lfred Sellers (23 Aug 1855 - March 1921) and Oscar (D)avid Sellers (Sept 1861 - 1944) were both sons of John Peter Sellers (2 Sept 1827 - 1910) and Lydia Catherine Gilmore (1835 - 4 Nov 1866) and were grandsons of Emanuel Sellers and Sarah Warble. Thomas married Milliam A. (Millie) Shifflet (1879 - 1939) and Oscar married (1) Isyphene C. Rodgers and (2) Virginia Catherine Sowers. Thomas and Oscar had two full sisters in Sarah (born 1857) and Minnie (born 4 Nov 1866). Unfortunately, its possible that their mother, Lydia, died giving birth to sister Minnie. Minnie's given birthdate of 4 Nov 1866 matches the date given for when Lydia died. Minnie married Jeremiah Long. After their mother's death in 1866 their father, John Peter, married Lydia's sister, Mary J. Gilmore (20 Dec 1830 - 1907). John Peter Sellers and Mary J. Gilmore were married on 20 Aug 1867 and had a son, Charles Zebulon Sellers in June 1869. There is a gravesite for a "Charlie Z. and Mary J. Sellers" in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery which is that of Charles Zebulon Sellers. Its unknown to me whether the "Mary J." was his mother or a wife that could've been named Mary J. as well. Its odd that the parents, John Peter Sellers and 2nd wife Mary J. Gilmore, appear on the 1880 Rockingham County, Virginia Census, Stonewall District as well with children Minnie A. and Charles Z. living in the household. Why the other two boys, Thomas A. and Oscar D. were living with their grandmother is a complete mystery to me. The two boys are in the household of their grandmother, Mary M. Gilmore, while the other two children are at home with John Peter and Mary J. Makes one wonder where daughter Sarah was ...? Hope that's of some help and interest to someone .... Georgia, Like you, I recognize who most of these people are. I'm certainly familiar with the family of Theodore N. Sellers, his wife Jane, and their 6 children. Son John V. was actually John (D)unkam, and he married Lula Shaver. Son Edgar (B)rown married Mary Julia Mauzy. Son Theodore (N)orton married Louise Yates. Daughter Margaret (C)atherine married James Sipe and is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville. If memory serves me correctly, their son eventually sold their land on which the Coors Plant is currently built in Rockingham County. Daughter Ada (L)ee never married and is also buried in Mt. Olivet. Son William married Rhoda Swartzel. I'm also very familiar with the Wood family and its own interesting connections to the Sellers. As seen from the Census, John (I)som Wood married Elizabeth Magadalene Maggard, daughter of Annie P. Maggard who is living in the household as well. Annie (P)ersilla Maggard was nee Sellers. She was indeed a sister to my 4 Great Grandfather, John Conrad Sellers. Annie (22 March 1802 - 18 Oct 1889) is buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Anna and John Conrad's sister, Elizabeth Sellers, was also living with them. Elizabeth (1 Nov. 1791 - 4 June 1884) never married and is also buried at Mt. Olivet. All of the Wood's were eventually buried at Mt. Olivet as well. Here's where it gets interesting. John I. Wood's sister, Martha E. Wood, married John Wiklif Sellers, son of John Conrad Sellers and Catherine Brown. I recently spent a month tracking what happened to Martha and John which took me from VA to Texas and back again. A third Wood sibling, George, married Leonora Bell, daughter of William H. Bell and Eveline Shields. William H. Bell's sister and hence Leonora's Aunt, was Frances S. Bell. Frances S. Bell was the 2nd wife of John Conrad Sellers after the death of his first wive, Catherine Brown, in 1842. Interesting and confusing all at the same time! Unfortunately, off the top of my head, I do not recognize the identity of the Thomas A. Sellers and Oscar D. Sellers listed as grandsons in the Mary M. Gilmore household. I'll have to take a look at my notes once I get home this evening and see if I have anything there. I'll keep an eye out, too, for any Hickles that might appear in the mix somehow as well. Will post what, if anything, I find as soon as I can. Georgia, I think its an excellent possibility that the 1850 Census record is for Elizabeth Magdalene Sellers and husband Jacob Shirey. This Jacob Shiry in 1850 appears in the household of (I'm assuming) his mother, Elizabeth, age 61. Ten years later, the Jacob Shirey on the 1860 Augusta County Census has his mother, Elizabeth, Age 72, living in his household. I think it would be a safe assumption to say that the 1850 Jacob in Rockingham Co. and the 1860 Jacob in Augusta Co. are one and the same. Since we only see one Jacob Shiry/Shirey and not two separate Jacob Shiry/Shireys living in each county for both the 1850 and 1860 Censuses, I think the assumption is an even safer one to make. And, additionally, the ages listed for Jacob and Elizabeth for the 1850 Census are nearly correct for what they should be for the Jacob Shirey and Elizabeth Magdalene Sellers we're looking for. You are most definitely correct about Rockingham County. It shares a border with Augusta County. This line of Sellers was from Rockingham County and did not move into Augusta County until Elizabeth's father, John Conrad Sellers, moved the family there in the 1830's. John Conrad Sellers appears on the 1830 Rockingham County Census but then appears on the 1840 Augusta County Census. He bought a farm just outside of Churchville, Augusta County. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate the land records for the property to determine exactly when he bought it and from whom. So, Elizabeth, born in 1823, would've been about 10 when the family moved from Rockingham to Augusta County. In fact, the farm in Augusta Co. that they located to is no more than 10 miles or so (if that much) from the Rockingham Co. line. I guess the assumption now would be that Elizabeth married Jacob in 1843, and they were living in the household of his mother as late as 1850. If the Jacob Shiry/Shirey of the 1860 Census that was married to Lucy A. and that had a daughter, Sarah E., born in 1852 or 1853 was the same Jacob Shirey/Shiry that married Elizabeth M. Sellers in 1843, whatever became of or happened to Elizabeth occurred at some point between 1850 and 1852. Question now is, what happened, when, and where is she buried? I'm sounding like an annoying broken record, but I certainly appreciate your patience, help, and efforts! In 1850 Rockingham County, Virginia, I found the following: 1850 Rockingham County, Virginia 56 1/2 District Enumerated on November 14, 1850 Image 289 and 290 on Ancestry.com census records HH#449 Elizabeth Shiry,61, F, VA; Jacob Shiry, 22, M, VA, farmer; Elizabeth Shiry, 25, F, VA; Daniel Shiry, 20, M, VA Many times when they have the age out of sequence like this, it is because it is a daughter-in-law rather than a daughter. I realize the ages are slightly off but it does have Elizabeth as two years older than Jacob and your records show her two years older also. Don't discount this as being Elizabeth Magdalene Sellers Shirey until you can prove it is not. Am I correct about Rockingham County? Is it close to Augusta County? Elizabeth Magdalene Sellers was born March 24, 1823, was a sister to Jerome H.B. Sellers, and both were indeed children of John Conrad Sellers and Catherine Brown. Elizabeth married Jacob Shirey on November 21, 1843. Beyond that, I have no other info concerning them. I have no record of any children and no record of what happened to them after that. Again, thank you for the effort in finding Jacob on the 1880 Census. That's the first info of any kind that I've really seen about him. Very much interested in anything additional that you can magically find about them :-) Thanks for all your efforts and assistance. Its been greatly appreciated! Georgia, I found Jacob and family listed on the 1860 Augusta County Census as part of the "Valley of the Shadow" website's info. 1860 Augusta County, North Subdivision, Virginia Page #1000, Dwelling #1260, Family #1265 Jacob Shirey, W, M, 33 Day Laborer Lucie A. Shirey, W, F, 40 Sarah E. Shirey, W, F, 7 Mary J. Shirey, W, F, 4 Jacob F.E. Shirey, W, M, 1 Elizabeth Shirey, W, F, 72 It appears that this is the same Jacob and Lucy that we've found on the 1870 and 1880 Augusta County Census. In 1860, however, it appears that they had another, older daughter, Sarah E. Shirey, and Jacob's mother, Elizabeth, was also living with them. Sarah does not appear on any Census after 1860, so that leaves me wondering what happened to her. The 1860 Census info would push Jacob and Lucy's marriage date back to at least 1852 since daughter Sarah appears as age 7. If this Jacob Shirey is the one that originally married Elizabeth Magdalene Sellers, then we're down to basically a 10 year window of trying to determine what happened to Elizabeth between her marriage to Jacob in 1843 and his marriage and child with Lucy A. by 1852 or 1853. I have not been able to locate Jacob on the 1850 Augusta County Census ....
