    3. Just took a look at the list of words and its a very good one. Very interesting. I did notice, however, a small mistake in the definition listed for "Consort". The listed definition is "Wife of the deceased", which I believe is incorrect. My understanding of the term "Consort" is that the spouse, namely the wife, died before the husband. A woman who outlived her husband was therefore a "Relict", ie, the "wife of the deceased". I apologize for being so picky. I just thought I would forward this since Consort and Relict are quite often found in both Wills and on grave and tombstones and the terminology can be confusing. Sorry for the delay in answering your message. I don't know if I can help much. I will answer some here and when I get caught up, I will try to send anything that I have. My great grandmother was James Savannah Hicks (married William Stager and then William Gossett). I know almost nothing about her. My father, the oldest of his generation is dead, plus neither he nor his siblings liked her. They all say that she was physically dirty, nasty house and was mean. So much for a loving grandmother. James Savannah Hicks Stager Gossett died January 2, 1942. At the time she was living in Rome, Georgia (Floyd County, about 75 miles northwest of Atlanta, not far from the Alabama state line). Floyd County is where she spent her adult life and all of her children were born. At the time of her death she was living with one of her sons from her second marriage. (I am descendent from her first marriage.) James Savannah Hicks was the daughter of James Hicks and Louisa "Lucy" C. Sellers. I did not know her mother's maiden name until I ordered a copy of her death certificate. James Hicks was born March 26, 1848 and died January 10, 1922. Lucy Sellers was born August 9, 1835 and died February 3, 1907. After I received James Savannah Hicks' death certificate, I ran a search. The 1880 census came up with a James Hicks married to Louise C. with children John, Lillie, and James S. Living with them was Seller, Mary listed as mother-in-law. They were living in Weakley, TN. James S. is listed as a son, but the age is right to be James Savannah and if she was not in sight when the census was taken, it would be a logical mistake. Plus she was called James or Jamie a great deal, as well as Savannah. Also, I know for a fact that she had a sister named Lillie. Lillie also lived in Floyd County and was around when my dad was little. She married a man named T.S. "Bush" Washington. Backed up to the 1870 census. I found James and Louise married in Weakley. They had one child- John who is four. It has them as being married in January of the census year. So either John was illegitimate or Louise had been married before. I also found a Joseph and Mary Sellers in Sampson County, TN. (They have a Nancy Matthew and Nancy's two children living with them.) O.k. Let me know what else you want. I have: 1. More on James Savannah 2. Tombstone pictures 3. Census information - 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1930. 4. Death Certificates - James Savannah, James Hicks If you do connect, I would love any information that you have. I look forward to hearing from you, Mary Hall (I live in Floyd County, Georgia) mhall@rcs.rome.ga.us

    1. [SELLERS] Documents Signed With an "X"
    2. Very interesting stuff...Thought I'd pass it along -Ed Hudson "X" THE SIGNATURE OF THE LITERATE In the Middle Ages, when most of the population was illiterate, it was common practice to use the X as a substitute for an individuals signature. Later, the practice was taken up by well educated people quite capable of signing their name. In fact, it was not uncommon for kings and queens to sign with an X. The X became an important symbol for many reasons. The sign of one of the twelve apostles, St. Andrew, was an X therefore using his mark indicated you would honor your agreement in his name. Also, according to the Encyclopedia Americana, Volume 1 of the 1965 edition, the Romans crucified St. Andrew on a decussate (X shaped) cross which then came to be known as the Cross of Saint Andrew. It is also, like the swords of the early knights, a visual representation of the Cross of the Crucifixion. So the use of the X was deeply rooted in Christian symbolism. The early settlers brought many customs from England to the Colonies. Therefore, you must consider the religious temperament, English custom and the education level of the parents and children of an individual to try to learn whether he could read and write. Do not be surprised if an important document, i.e. will or deed, was signed with an X instead of the signature of someone known to be educated. It was a common practice and, in some cultures, a document would not be considered legal and binding without it. When going through early American court records keep this in mind. Do not automatically assume a person was illiterate if he or she signed with a X. In fact, it could prove to be quite the contrary. I am a descendant of these guys through Emile Sellers who was the son Lewis Matthew Sellers according to Ed's research. I have been watching for any information on these guys because it pretty much stops at the senior Matthew. I have a family tree compiled by some of the Sellers clan who reside in Abbeville, Louisiana and they do not list the junior Matthew as Louis Mathew. I think there is a bust in our tree because they have the father of Matthew senior as being the controversial William Sellers who lived in Tarboro in 1750. Please keep up the good work on researching this line of Sellers. This is the first time I see an interest in this line. The descendants of Emile ended up settling down in an around Abbeville , Louisiana. Thanks Again. Clyde Sellers Hi Clyde and Marie, The only info I have on these folks comes from a note posted by Mary Wiley Campbell on the St. Martin County/Parish Louisiana page of Marie's Sellers Family Genealogy site, and several family trees posted on Ancestry.com. Ms. Campbell says the Louisiana church records of the marriage of Mathieu (Matthew) Sellers and Marie Reine Aucoin state that Mathieu's parents were Mathieu (Matthew) Sellers and Esther Neel. The family trees I saw state that the full name was Louis Mathieu Sellers, born in Charleston, SC on March 15, 1772. I have no proof that these assertions are accurate, but the trees are very detailed, and appear to have come from family records, especially regarding the family of Marie Reine Aucoin. I have e-mailed Mary Campbell and the poster of the most detailed tree in an attempt to find additional data, but I've received no reply. As to the business about "William of Tarboro", it's been obvious to me for years that the man's full name had to be William Benjamin Sellers, and that he merely went by Benjamin. This is now proven by an entry in an old Bible started by the Hartwell H. Sellers family, and now in the possession of Carlah Drury. "William of Tarboro" was not a myth, but merely a confusion about the man's name in various books and records. As far as I'm concerned, this debate and speculation is over. Others may continue to beat this dead horse if they wish. The problem I'm having now is that, if Louis Matthew Sellers was indeed the son of Matthew Sellers and Esther Neel, then my previous information on these folks is wrong, at least as to dates. If I discover anything more definitive on these folks, I'll let you know, and I would appreciate it if you'd do the same. Take care, -Ed Hudson ehudsoniii@aol.com

I did talk to a man named Steve Due who knows her, and asked him to suggest to her that she could take the Bible to Kinkos or a similar copying/printing/publishing company. They could photograpically reproduce the family entries without harming the Bible for a modest fee. I know that both your Sellers group and I would love to have a copy. I haven't heard back from Steve. As far as I'm concerned, however, Carlah has already attested to the Bible's authenticity, and had provided us with as much of the family data as she could decipher. I believe that she is a person of integrity, so that constitutes sufficient proof for me on the William Benjamin Sellers matter. The actual age of the Bible is uncertain. The Title page says that it is comformable to the edition of 1611. This merely means that it conforms to the King James version of the Bible, which was first published in 1611. The Title page also says : English Edition Printed by Kneeland and Green Boston, Mass 1772 #412 This may very well be the year this particular Bible was first offered for public sale. If so, perhaps it was purchased originally by Matthew Sellers and his wife Ann Corbett, who entered Matthew's father's (William Benjamin) and grandfather's (Matthew) name to start a family record.
