A few give clues to later residence but not many. In the case of my King relatives, I had John King's Rev War Pension file to work from. Agree that some of these names are very common, so pension files or something similar probably needed to identify the Sellers men definitively. I am suggesting that this would be useful for those we can identify, listing whatever proof exists. As an example, I would list Leonard Sellers from Washington Co. PA who went to Bracken Co. KY. There is at least good circumstantial evidence that the man can be correctly identified. Sherry marie sellers hollinger <mari@netins.net> wrote: SHERRY, thanks HOW did you connect/link/prove back? I did it years ago, before public computers, in part from his Revolutionary War records and pension application. Sabert Sollars indeed had a very full and active life, right down to being part of Joseph Robidoux' Fur Trading business in the Blacksnake Hills where St. Joseph, Mo was established as other settlers came to settle around the post. I'm sure their are other records to be glean from the areas he lived in that will provide more details about him. I'm sure that one day they will likely appear on the internet perhaps through Mormon efforts. I keep hoping to find some additional records in the Shenandoah that make mention of my Ignatius Sollas. I have not even been able to locate a marriage license for him and Elizabeth. There are early Tax Rolls in Frederick Co., VA that he is present on. I would dearly love to see these transcribed and all available on the Internet, but to date nothing has shown up. It would good to study all those recorded on it from the 1780s to 1800. Bob Robert C. 1. [SELLERS] Some tips for using ARIAS info
    2. SHERRY MAZZETTI
    3. Marie, Here are a few tips for using the information from ARIAS: 1) The printed volumes of the Pennsylvania Archives, which have gone through several printings, list some of the militia companies complete with all members. These lists are useful for finding relatives and neighbors. You can look for individual soldiers in the printed volumes, but you should realize that they are very incomplete--at least, I found them so. The books are available in many good university and genealogical libraries. 2) The online abstract cards for militia members indicate the county from which the man served and often also indicate the Battalion, Company, and Class, sometimes with the Captains name. There is a separate index of Rev War militia officers, and some of the cards in this index list not just the county but the township for the officer. As an example, my John King served, in one instance, under Captain Thomas Davies of Bedford County. Davies card shows him as Captain of the 2nd Co., 1st Battalion from Providence Township 1780-1783a clue to where my ancestors may have lived. I have also learned that militia members were divided into classes according to county geography. Not sure that class always equals township, but I believe so. Usually contemporary tax lists for the counties were also divided into classes, and if tax lists exist, you can match the service class to a tax list class. In another period of service, John King served in the 5th class. Unfortunately, contempora! ry tax lists for the 5th class in Bedford do not exist, but lists for some other classes do exist for the period shortly after the war. I used them to exclude some townships. In some instances, the numbers of certificates issued after the war are listed. I used the series numbers of certificates issued on 14 March 1787 to link John King with Richard King and a few of their officers listed in John Kings pension record. Although I do not have the register page to look at, since the PA Archives will not send a copy, the cards also indicate the volume and page, and these were also the same. My point is that comparing the information from the card abstracts can help determine whether Sellers within counties are likely to be related or not. 3) The biggest weakness of the online abstracts is that it is an alpha only list. You cannot sort the names by county, battalion, officer, etc. which would be most useful. 4) Finally, for those interested in PA Sellers during other time periods, there are also online abstracts for other major wars at the ARIAS site. Hope this makes sense. Sherry

George W Sellers and Margaret Wilson Sellers lived in Middletown, Dauphin Co., PA in the early 1800's. I know from census data that Margaret was born in 1800--no clue as to the birth date of George. I also know from several sources that Margaret and the children moved from Middletown to Hollidaysburg, Huntingdon Co. (now Blair Co.) in 1835. George was not with them. I can only assume that George died sometime between 1833 and 1835 in Dauphin Co. I have been unable to find any record of his death from the Dauphin Co. Historical Soc. or from the Clerk of Court. I have been able to track their children and grandchildren to the present time, but am unable to find the parents of George. Unless they had a pension file, it is very hard to prove, Our SELLERS probably interested in what you have. Will link these files to the counties which may help, WE probably should have a file listed on each county page, thanks, marie, iowa -----Original Message----- From: SHERRY MAZZETTI [mailto:sherrymazzetti1@prodigy.net] Sent: Friday, March 05, 2004 12:35 PM To: SELLERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SELLERS] Rev War Sellers listed in PA Archives (ARIAS) >From the Pennsylvania Archives Revolutionary War Military Abstract Card File (online). Finally, it is clear that the same soldier was sometimes listed under different spellings. The list below does not indicate how many cards were found online. Some have only one; others have many. I have listed the surname once, the first name once (including some variants), and the county or city once for each man. Finally, I can identify some of these men in our Sellers files. Think it would be a good idea to match as many as we have recorded elsewhere. Sherry S

    3. I have several Sellers names from the same source (ARIAS) noted by Sherry: Sellers, Philip Lancaster Co., 7th Bn, time of service June 26 to July 23 1781--Commander: Capt Abraham Scott--for duty at Lancaster. Sellers, Philip Lancaster Co., 3rd Bn, Commander Col. Lowery, Company commander Capt Robert McKee--served at Middletown. Sellers, Philip, Lancaster Co., 10th Bn, Commander Lt William McClure--duty:substitute for John Parks. I have a feeling that these three Philips are the same man. Sellers, David Phila. City, Commander Capt. Elija Weed, dated 1780-1781 Sellers, David, Cumberland Co., 4th Company, Aug 6, 1781--no duty station noted Sellers, George, Washington Co., 5th Company, service 1781-1783--no duty station noted Information in these abstracts is sketchy at best. There was one entry for a non-Sellers member that included a statement, "He leaves or his crop fails." Kinda funny, but it alludes to the pressures that many of those militia men faced other than the war itself. Carl Sellers

Just noticed the posting. He met and married Sadie Cox in Coleridge, NC. I know he worked in a mill in Enterprise, Al. I suspect he may have gone to work at a mill in Coleridge. It had a rather large mill during this time period. He moved the young family to the NC coast. We believe he was involved in boat building. Had a heart attack when he was young. I've been able to find some information on the Marsh side of the family but unable to learn anything about the Sellar side.
