Hi Marie, I saw this at Ancestry.com... Not sure if it has been posted or not. Jim Ancestry.com. Shelby and Moultrie Counties, Illinois Biographical Dictionary [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2003. Original data: Portrait and Biographical Record of Shelby and Moultrie Counties, Illinois. Chicago, IL, USA: Biographical Publishing, 1891. GEORGE W. FLUCKEY is a resident on a farm located on section 17, of Tower Hill Township, Shelby County. His father was Adam Fluckey, who was probably a native of Pennsylvania. His mother was Mary Sellers. After marriage they settled in Perry County, Ohio, and from there moved to what is now Morrow County, Ohio; there they died. They were parents of seven children, of whom our subject was the second in order of birth. He first saw the light of day in Perry County, Ohio, August 12, 1830. His early life was spent on a farm in Morrow County, Ohio, and there he learned the duties incident to farm life. Mr. Fluckey was married October 2, 1856, to Miss Arvilla Brown, their nuptials being celebrated in Morrow County, Ohio. By her he became the father of three children, whose names are: Sarah E., Ira A., and Winfield S. The first named is the wife of Charles Summers. Ira married Melinda Fagg. Mrs. Arvilla Fluckey, died in their home in Morrow County, in April 1862. Two years later. He again took upon himself the duties and obligations of marital life and was united to Edith A. Bennett. She also was a native of Morrow County, Ohio. Six children cluster about the home board. Their names are Isaac N., Lewis B., George B., William E., James A. and Bertha A. The removal from Ohio to Shelby County, this State, was made in April 1868, and at that time they settled in Tower Hill Township, of which place our subject has ever since been a resident. He has always been engaged in agricultural pursuits and is the owner of three hundred and seventeen acres of land. Mr. Fluckey has erected a very attractive residence on his place. It is tastefully built and conveniently arranged. This place is graciously presided over by his wife, who has been his aid and helpmate in gaining the position which he at present enjoys. He of whom we write is held high in the esteem of the people in the community where he resides. A thoughtful and earnest man he is genial and whole-souled. Several local offices in the gift of the township have been thrust upon him and his service as a School Director has been appreciated by the fact that he desires to keep abreast with the times in educational matters, seeking to make the standard of the schools in his district, irreproachable. In politics he is an adherent of the Republican Party, the views as taken by that party of commercial affairs and general government being such as harmonize best with our subject’s theories. Religiously both he and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in which they are ardent workers and generous supporters.
SHERRY, thanks. Interested in any SELLERS/FLUCKEY kids and where went. We must prove their documents also, if no source given. Did I see an 1805 Huntington Co, Pa birth for Jacob SELLERS 1805 ?? I am going to see if the person who contacted me about the graves is still on the Shelby Co. IL list where I am already a member. I found a 46-page family page for the Fluckey family, including three Fluckey/Sellers connection. It looks to be well done but without any proofs. The Shelby Co. IL family is there as well. Although I see no connection between the Rodman/Sellers of the family below and the Rodman/Sellers of Shelby Co. IL (Robert Sellers/Nancy Rodman), I suppose you have to think it possible. Think I saw some mention somewhere of Fayette Co. PA. All the lists seem to have the family somewhere (but all over) PA. Maybe finding Fluckey or Sellers in PA is possible. Unfortunately, I do not know if the connection predates OH. There is a mention (in a Morrow County bio, I think) that the two families--Sellers and Fluckey traveled together from another county in OH. With three total marriages, it is not surprising. I do get the point that it is necessary to pin them down in PA. Has anyone looked at the PA archives online? I'll have a look. MARIE and ALL, I THINK this is same family as John Sellers 1775/1839. They appear in Cumberland Co. PA records first, then Mifflin. See what you think. No time to copy more tonight. MARIE, Fluckey info (without proof) states that George Fluckey married in Philadelphia but later lived in Huntingdon Co. PA which is adjacent to Mifflin. Might make Sellers/Fluckey neighbors in PA. I have been looking at PA/Arias, Mother Bedford and some other sources, including a book on Bedford--immediate parent county to Huntingdon. I may have some indication at least that during the Revolution and shortly afterward, the Sellers family was in Cumberland Co. (parent county to most counties in the area), perhaps close to Mifflin (circumstantial evidence) and later in Mifflin. Of course, having the right names does not prove absolutely that these are the right Sellers, so...I cannot find George Fluckey in the early PA census at all, and the only Isaac Sellers I found in the ARIAS militia cards is the one who married Mary Blackmore, went to Mason Co. Hi Sherry, The information you seek IS AVAILABLE and has been for years. You can find it in most librarys and the reference book can be purchased for about $50.00. You need to introduce yourself to "The Handybook for Genealogists" published by The Everton Publishers, Inc. It is LOADED with answers to all of the questions you pose as unknown or uncertain plus much more helpful information to a genealogist. This is a very handy book for genealogists. ........... Marie and All, This will be the last note of the nightmaybe even for a day or two. I need to work out some of these relationships, but I thought you might like to look at http://www.minerd.com/bio-miner,_marysellers.htm. This Mary (Miner) Sellers was the wife of Isaacs son James S. Sellers. Her mother was a Fluckey, so it looks like there are at least two Sellers/Fluckey connections. Need more time, but family states that the immigrant was George Fluckey, a Hessian soldier. Reportedly, there is a book on George Fluckey. The page contains info on Mary, James, and James second wife. There are also some interesting links. Also, if you are looking to reunite the Bible with some family, maybe the webmaster (or contributors on ancestry) could help. I am certain that someone would LOVE to have it. Sherry
Ray, Thanks for the tip, but I am already aware of the book, although I do not own it. I do have maps showing changes for some states (such as KY) that I work in frequently. Otherwise, I look it up. I was only suggesting that there is a lot of confusion out there. Beginning and even genealogists do make mistakes, but sometimes the confusion starts with the record itself. Again, unless I find William Pile/Piles/Pyle/Pyles family (he is just an inlaw), I will never be absolutely sure what Knox Co. NC refers. He gave the info and the Soldiers' Home (Civil War) just recorded it. At another point, I had one of my greatgrandmother's sisters born in an odd place called Lanesville, IN. Since the kids were born in two states and several towns within one of the states, I was puzzled at the distance but never really questioned the entry, until I found that there had been two towns of the same name until the name was later changed for one of them (to Lawrence) and the town I wanted was actually close by. The original record, however, still reads Lanesville. I get questioned all of the time because this same greatgrandmother was born in Shelby Co. IL while some others were born in Shelby Co. IN. It is not a typo, but I will bet anything that there are some who "correct my mistake" in their own genealogies. I could give other examples but hope I clarified my point. It is just too easy to slip up. Again, thanks for mentioning THE HANDYBOOK. It is an excellent tool. Marie, I agree that listing a birth county can be tricky. I think that it is possible that someone born in a particular town or city passes that information along to descendants. When a family member looks (maybe a century or two later) for that place on a map and determines the county, he or she may be unaware that county boundaries changed and sometimes changed dramatically. That could be true in PA and definitely is true in states like KY. I see the same VA marriage listed in multiple counties. It takes some backtracking to figure out what the original county was. Sometimes even the state changes. I have one in-law who gave his birthplace as Knox Co. NC. I think it might now be TN, but I do not know for sure. I also agree with you that there is no proof of place listed--not even the state as far as I can tell. I am amazed that you can remember as much of the county changes as you do. I always have to look it up. This is not my family, but if I get some time, I will see if I can puzzle anything out. Sherry
