Thanks, Marie. Here is an address for the Fort Smith , Arkansas Public Library in case you do not have it yet. Click on the link and click Sebastian County Marriages. There are some Sellers marriages on this. Type Sellers next to brides and clck start search (do not add anything else), do the same for grooms. You have to stroll down the page then when you get to the bottom stroll back up and hit next if there are more than one page of Sellers. Sebastian County may sound like an unlikely place for finding Sellers but remember my grandmother, Fannie Sellers and her family were in Sebastian County after leaving Texas. http://www.fspl.lib.ar.us/genmain.html Jo Ann ----- Original Message ----- From: "marie sellers hollinger" <[email protected]> To: "SELLERS" <[email protected]>; "HOLLINGER" <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, May 28, 2007 1:26 PM Subject: [SELLERS] MEMORIAL DAY > REMEMBERING ALL who are not with us today. > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
REMEMBERING ALL who are not with us today.
In a message dated 5/28/07 9:42:31 AM Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: > Now in the transcription I found at genforum, the Killian in brackets was > after William Killen´s name, which would make sense. i.e. explaining that HE > was a Killian. So, it looks like I have to order the original bond to see > what´s going on. At any rate this new find clarifies that John Moore was > witness and not minister. In respect to early N. C. marriage bonds. The bondsman was the person who promised to pay security (usually $500) if the marriage did not take place - one of the parties reneged on the agreement. Generally you find that this person is some kind of relative, brother in law, parent, cousin, occasionally a neighbor. The witness is generally either the county court clerk or a local Justice of the Peace, who the bond was written by and the security sworn too. Later you will find local minister's also filling that role, but early bonds it is more than likely the clerk or a JP. John Moore was a Justice of the Peace in Lincoln Co., NC in that period. He appears as witness on a number of bonds in Lincoln in that time frame. The Nathan Thompson - Elizabeth Black bond number is 0000762229 (reference number for the bond at the NC Archives) The bondsman for the marriage of Morris Cox and Elizabeth Black was Wallace Alexander. (Note that the Alexander family was another prolific settler family group into that area, like the Killian's were, except they were Scoth-Irish instead of German speakers. The western frontier area on NC was settled primarily by the Scotch-Irish and the German speaking groups. By the 2nd or third generation the two groups were intermarrying, although you do see a little bit of that already happening in earlier Virginia/Pa families who settled frontier NC. But they tended to keep themselves segregated within their own communities in the early settlement period) (Of course, the English speaking settlers were the ones running the government, court clerks, justices, politicians, and the German names were anglicized, which really can get things confused when researching these families. Like the two Sellers groups, one German, who were in old Tryon[Lincoln/Rutherford] county and pushed west into Rutherford and then into Haywood Co. And the English speaking Sellers who appear to have been in Mecklenburg county, then into Burke, and also moved into Haywood/ Macon Co., NC. It's a conundrum!) > As to sons of Andreas = Anrew Killian, there appear to be 6: Leonard > (accounted for); John (partially accounted for - online trees give 7 > children and no Elizabeth, though he is supposed to have had 8 children and > his wife was named Elizabeth); David, Samuel, Andrew and Crate (not in birth > order and all apparently listed in his will). > The William Killian who was bondsman to the Nathan Thompson - Est(h)er Black bond was most likely a grandson or great grandson of Andreas Killian. Andreas Killian died in 1788 in Lincoln Co., NC. He named 12 children in his will. The children believed to have been by two different wives. 1) Margaret b. 1721 m. Michael Price 2) Leonard b. 1723 m. Mary Margaret ? 3) John b. 1726 m. Elizabeth Zimmerman (anglacized Carpenter) 4) Jean m. William Lawin (Lawing) 5) Crete (Lucretia?) m. a Hager, possibly George Hager 6) Andrew (Andreas), Jr m. ? 7) George 8) Bunia m. James Pritchett 9) Daniel m. Mary (possibly Cline or Beaver) 10) Samuel m. Barbara Hager 11) Christianna m. John Barringer 12) Elizabeth m. Michael Hank On the topic of migrations, it is surprising when you don't find other related families living in the new area where you find your ancestors migrated too. As new lands opened up for settlement in the move westward, splinter groups would move. Maybe one or two of the family would go out west and then they'd send letters back home extolling the better living conditions, good farm land, etc., and some of the sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews would decide to pack up and move out to join them. Looking for opportunities, more land. (With families traditionally producing 10 to 15 children good land and prospects for generating income tended to dwindle over time, as the new generations reached adulthood.) Sometimes a few of them didn't like the place and would move back "home", or pick up and move westward again..but generally some of the neighbors and kinfolks would always move and cluster together. Of course, once the clustering started, they began to intermarry amongst themselves all over again. Fortunately they also picked up a few new bloodlines in these moves to help dilute the concentrated genepool. They liked their cousins. Following family lines form many of these mini migrations, which started in the western settlement area of NC soon after the Revolution (although the same pattern was typical since family groups began to emigrate out of Europe to the Colonies), I've just become accustomed to looking for family connections in the places another connecting family member is found. I've found people I didn't have a clue as to what became of them, and suddenly there they are five states away. And then I ask myself, okay, why are they here and who else is living here with them. Sometimes the connections aren't very clear until you start digging into them in more depth. Charmaine ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Charmaine, Yes, I noted Samuel Thompson in St. Francois MO also and the Justina M. daughter caught my eye. Only problem though is his age. Samuel Thompson, son of Nathan Thompson and Esther Black was b. 15 Mar 1790. But mistakes have been made before on censuses. I tried to follow him in later censuses but could never find him or Justina. There were some other of Jane´s brothers who went to MO, Lorenzo Dow and Thomas went to Daviess Co. MO. Jane seemed to stick close to family because she was in Tippah MS in 1860, where here brother JW Thompson lived. Maybe she went with Mr. Sellers to MO and he died there or along the way and her children joined her there. Margaret Minerva Sellers Ross, my ggggrandmother, was widowed 25 Aug 1848. She was pregnant and my gggrandmother, Martha Verlinchia Franklin Ross who was b. 6 Jan 1849 in TN. Note that Margaret Minerva Sellers´s brother John Sellers had child James R. who was 8/12 in 1850 and b. MO. I tend to think the family went west together. Yes, and perhaps Jane migrated to where a brother was living. It´s interesting that you found other North Carolinians from the old neighborhood in St. Francois. I have also noted how people followed one another around. The Ross family who the Sellers children md. were in Lincoln NC from around 1785-1806 and then went to Bedford TN, part of which became Coffee Co. TN. As to the Killians and why William would have been bondsman for the marriage of Esther Black and Nathan Thompson, I have tried to figure out the connection. I looked up data about the Killians and though I have found no proof of a connection other than the Killians and Blacks living in the same area early on I did find one tree that said that Esther was Esther Killian Black (now the tree itself is not online at ancestry anymore and I don´t know if the person just assumed (due to the bondsman) that Esther was a Killian. I´d sure like to know!!! I think I have Esther´s parents pinned down as being Thomas Black and Elizabeth UNK. When Elizabeth was widowed, she married Morris Cox (who was also widowed). Morris Cox was the brother of Rebecca Cox, who was the mother of Sarah Bonham who was the mother of Oliver Franklin Ross who md. Margaret Minerva Sellers. So, family ties again, with intermarriages. I noted that Andrew Killian (besides Leonard who was father of William) had another son, John who md. an Elizabeth and that they had 4 sons and 4 daughters. Perhaps my Elizabeth UNK was Elizabeth Killian? John was b. 1725/6 so he could be the possible father of Elizabeth UNK who had child Esther b. 1769. Thank you so much again for your help! Linda: Since many of these early settlers to the western portion of N. C. flow together, so to speak, I was curious who might also show up in 1850 St. Francois Co., MO, where the widow Jane Sellers and her children were living. First I have a question. Is there a relationship with the Samuel Thompson, age 55, born NC who is listed on page 152B. He is widowed with a small child in the household named Justina M. Thompson, age 4, born MO. Jane Sellers is listed on the next page 153A..and there is the daughter Justiana Sellers age 15. I also have a comment. About the end of the 1820's a small migration of loosely related families from western NC began to move into Missouri. One family was that of George Cathey, Jr. Most of the children accompanied him and his wife. William Cathey whose daughter married Nathan Thompson Sawyer remained behind in Macon Co., NC. You find the Cathey groups spread around several MO. counties in 1850. Another group who migrated into Haywood Co., NC were the McFarland's, who then moved across the border into Greene Co., TN, and that eastern TN area. George Cathey, Jr's son George Cathey married Anna McFarland (born TN). They later appear in Cass Co., MO. Needless to say I was surprised to find a couple of this McFarland family groups also listed in St. Francois Co., MO in 1850: Three McFarland's listed living in St. Francois Co., MO in 1850 - Jacob M., John H. and William A. McFarland, all lived in the same Buncombe/Haywood Co., area as Nathan Thompson, et. al in 1800/1810. Several other NC born individuals who look like they may also belong to the same groupings, but I have to compare with earlier censuses and such before I can be positive. Just wonder if there is some undiscovered family connection which brought Jane Sellers and her children to settle in St. Francois Co., MO. I noticed the question about the Killian name spelling. Some of these Lincoln Co., NC Killian's marry into another one of my lines, and it was a very prominent surname is old Lincoln Co., NC. There is Killian's Creek, and there was the old Killian Meeting House. You still find the area fairly inundated with the Killian family surname, although you will find it spread through out the western NC counties now. But, just a little strange to see a German speaking individual serving as bondsman to one's who weren't. Is there some kind of inter marriage with the Thompson or Black family lines in Lincoln Co., NC (or the earlier Tryon Co., NC, which was abolished after the Revolutionary War, with part of Tryon taken to form Lincoln and the other portion forming old Rutherford Co., NC )? We need a male descendant for DNA to link to the family of Robert Sellers Sr. of Burke County, NC. This will probably be difficult. Hi Pat, I am sure it was William Killian. I found "The History of the Killian Family in North Carolina" online and the history writes that William Killian was the son of Leonard Killian and that William always spelled his name "Killen". Leonard Killian was son of Andrew Killian who came from PA and who was "granted" land by William Sherrill (1749). William Killian md. Mary Goodwin 28 Aug 1788, Lincoln Co. NC. They moved to IN. Dear Charmaine, Yes, Elizabeth Thompson married late and the Ute Sherill she married was the much older one in the census. Interesting that you also found a Ute Sherill who md. an Enloe as Thomas Thompson md. an Enloe also. Yes, it has been said that Nathan Thompson was bd. at Soco. I didn´t know it was next to the Cherokee reservation. Some of the Thompson descendants tried to claim "Indian money" via Esther Black (her father, Thomas Black was claimed to be part Cherokee). The claims were denied and I am not sure they were true either. I had not seen the Ute Sherrill estate reference. I only recently confirmed that my Jane was the daughter of Esther Black and Nathan Thompson so I need to look more into the collateral families as it is possible that if Mr. Sellers died prior to 1840, that Jane and family were living with relatives. Thank you so much! Appears to have been a family name that was used by descendants of the original Uriah "Ute" Sherrill who first settled in old Rowan Co., NC. In 1830 there was a Ute Sherrill listed on the Haywood Co., NC census. He is younger and has a wife and 3 children: Ute Sherrill 1 m 30 to und. 40; 1 f 0 to und. 5, 12 f 5 to und. 10, 1 f 30 to under 40. There was also a Ute Sherrill who married Issabelae (Isabella) Enloe 16 Aug 1829 Haywood Co., NC. I think that the Ute Sherrill who Elizabeth Thompson married 3 Jul 1831 Macon Co.,NC is the much older one(may have grown children and grandchildren at that time): 1830 Macon Co., NC census p. 7A Ute Sherrell 1 m 70 to und. 80. Elizabeth Thompson would have been about 55 at the tiem she married him. This may be the same Ute Sherrill who appears on the 1790 and 1800 Burke Co., NC censuses. N C State Archives has some estate records indexed by county on their site (not all counties listed): ah.dcr.state.nc.us/archives/FindingAids/Macon.htm. List Ute Sherrill estate records 1840. Probably died early in the year prior to the census being enumerated. There are a few Sellers estate records listed for Macon also, but all later than the Sellers you are searching for: Sellers, J. A. 1860 George N. 1871 L. R. 1893 Mary B. 1909 Phil 1909 If you see any you find interesting, you will have to write the NC Archives in Raleigh for the actual packet. I found Elizabeth Thompson Sherril listed as E. Sherril on the 1860 Jackson Co., NC (Webster Twp.) census, head, living with her brother N. B (Nathan B.) Thompson. They are still there in 1870, now listed in Qualla Town Twp (this is by the Cherokee Reservation. I think I noticed that Nathan Thompson the father is buried at Soco - (Soco Gap which runs down the mountain from old Haywood/Macon Co land into the Cherokee Reservation as it is today) Elizabeth still listed as head of household, now 84, with her brother N. B. Thompson, 75 and a hired man doing farm work. I don't find either one of them in Jackson, or adjacent counties by 1880. If you don't have this census info I can abstract it. I have that James Sellers was born about 1792 in North Carolina and went to Tennessee. He married an Unknown Thompson and had the following children: Nathan Sellers, James Sellers, John Sellers, Ester Sellers and Minerva Sellers. It is interesting that Jane Thompson is the daughter of Nathan Thompson and James Sellers and Unknown Thompson named their first son, Nathan Sellers. Also he has an Ester Sellers and Nathan Thompson was married to Esther Black. The James Sellers of Lawrence County, TN in 1840 and 1850 ends up in Maury County, TN by 1860. Maury County, TN, is where most of the sons of James T/Y Sellers that died in Chatham County, NC circa 1805 ended up shortly after the death of James T/Y Sellers in Chatham County, NC. All of this is from early family history and I have been unable to trace this line. Could Ester Sellers be Ruth E. Sellers? That is the same Nathan Thompson but I have not found a pension file. I have all of the children and almost all of the marriages (but not Jane´s marriage!) from the Buchanan bible records. Nathan Thompson md. Esther Black in Lincoln Co. Now that James Sellers living in the same neighbourhood as Nathan Thompson in 1830 looks very interesting! I am not sure of the exact date of birth of Margaret Minerva Sellers - in the censuses her age variation would indicate that she was b. 1824-1828. If she was b. 1824 the data would fit. The boy under age 5 would be brother John W Sellers and there was another boy age 5-10 (I don´t know of other siblings but have always considered that possible). The ages of James and his wife would fit. So that looks like a great possibility. I have not been able to find a family that fits in the 1840 census, neither in NC or TN. I also looked in MO and MS. Rute E. Sellers was b. 27 Sep 1839 in Rutherford Co. NC. In 1850, Jane is alone. It is possible that Mr. Sellers died before the 1840 census and Jane was living with a relative? Thank you so much! Marie: I looked for this John Sellers - 1830 Haywood Co., NC - earlier tonight, and do not find him as head of household in 1840 (Haywood or Macon). Also took a look at 1820 Wayne Co., KY. Why you may ask...... Nathan DeHart, who I mentioned as a neighbor of Nathan Thompson, in Haywood and Macon Co., NC, left Burke Co., NC (married 6 Nov. 1803 Catherine Christine Ramsey in Burke Co., NC) and went to Wayne Co., KY. Lived there a number of years and then migrated back to Haywood/Macon Co, NC by about 1830. There are several other families migrated and spent some time in Wayne Co., KY and then returned to western NC, before 1830. It's very odd. There is a John Sellers listed on the 1820 Wayne Co., KY census: John Sellers 2 m 0 to und. 10, 1 m 45 + -- 1 f 10 to und. 16, 1 f 26 to 45. This may be a second marriage for this John Sellers. There is a marriage listed 14 June 1813 Wayne Co., KY John Sellers and Sarah Roberts. It is curious, but don't know if he belongs to the Burke Co., NC Sellers or not. He is not in Wayne Co., KY by 1830. Nathan DeHart's oldest child John H. DeHart b. 26 Nov. 1804 Burke Co., NC, died in Swain Co., NC. Married a Jane Roberts 18 Oct 1823..appears in KY before they all returned to NC. Robert Sellers, son of Robert Sellers, Sr of Burke Co., NC took this route through Wayne Co., KY on his migration into Indiana. Robert Sellers married Sarah "Sally" Hall, the sister of Rev. Joshua Hall who married Sarah Sellers, sister of Robert Sellers, who are found in later Macon Co., NC (I mentioned them in an earlier post in relationship with James Sellers family in 1840.). There were a number of Hall heads of household in 1820 Wayne Co., KY. Seems odd, but I don't have enough documentation on this Sellers to make sense of the possible connection, if any. GEORGIA, just a note to you and all. I see or extracted on the 1830 Macon Co, NC census, page 19= A. JOHN SELLERS = 1m 0-5, 1m 5-10, 1m 15-20, 1m 30-40; 1f 0-5, 2f 5-10, 1f 10-15, 1f 30-40; 1s , page 19 Could he be an Abraham John Sellers? He may be indexed on ancestry as A John Gillow ? Looks like Seller =Didn't recheck tonite. We also have a JOHN SELLERS 1760/70 here with David, John Samuel Sellers. Some could connect to our Lincoln Co., NC PA SELLERS ? I haven't followed thro on 1840. I'm sure someone has. Advise thoughts, As we/I haven't followed many of these Pa kids either. I am finding people that say his father is Abraham Lenda "Jesse" Sellers but Robert Sellers Sr. of Burke County, NC also had a son, John Sellers. Robert Sellers Sr.'s son John might possibly be the John that was in Rutherford County, NC. I am inclined to think that the Margaret Sellers, widow, in Haywood County, NC, was the wife of John Sellers. James' brothers, Abraham Sellers and Isaac Marion Sellers both married in Haywood County, NC Georgia ----- Original Message ----- From: "linda peacock" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, May 27, 2007 4:56 AM Subject: Re: [SELLERS]Margaret Minerva Sellers of Sellers Family from NC, TN & MS, with a brief period in MO - update - Jane Thompson was MM Sellers´s mother Hi Georgia, Did the James Sellers you are mentioning live in Haywood Co. NC in 1830? Have you listed the dates of the births of the children before? Were there other children (need Justiana). I guesss it is possible that Ruth E was Ruth Esther but she always went by the name Ruth. He does sound interesting. Is it possible that this James died before the 1840 census? I checked my database and I do have a Mary Sellers born 1787 in Burke County, NC, daughter of James Sellers and Charity Unknown, that married an Unknown Thompson. This James Sellers would be a brother to the John Sellers that married Margaret Unknown. Both James and John Sellers are sons of Robert Sellers Sr. of Burke County, NC. CHARMAINE, Thanks for the helpful documents. YES, when we don't have ALL documents, makes you think we don't have all possible info! marie, iowa -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Sunday, May 27, 2007 10:58 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [SELLERS] Margaret Minerva Sellers of Sellers Family from NC,TN & MS, wi... There are several marriages listed in Haywood and Macon Co., NC for Thompsons who fit the bill to be children of Nathan Thompson. I haven't worked this Thompson connection to a great degree in connection with a number of the other families who moved from Burke/Rutherford and are found living near each other, intermarrying. Haywood Co., NC marriage bonds: 7 Jan. 1815 Thomas Thompson and Nancy Enloe - bondsman: Asaph Enloe (this is the "Sersop" Enloe who is listed 2 households from Nathan Thompson and next to James Sellers on the 1830 Haywood Co., NC census) 11 Aug 1820 Polly [Mary] Thompson and Alexander Crisp bondsman; Jacob Shuler (note Shuler's are neighbors of Nathan Thompson in 1830 Haywood and 1840 Macon Co., NC) 20 Nov 1823 Esther Thompson and Joel Sawyer bondsman: Alexander ? - think this is Alexander Crisp. You mention this marriage - interesting side here, one son of this marriage, Nathan Thompson Sawyer married a daughter of William Cathey. William Cathey followed the same basic migratory route. He was the son of George Cathey, Jr. George Cathey, Jr and his family were in Burke Co., NC 1790, moved into Buncombe 1800 (area which became Haywood in 1808, then into Haywood. William Cathey moved into Macon Co.) 30 Jan 1824 James Thompson and Betsy Wilkins 25 Feb. 1825 Jesse Thompson and Rachel Welch bondsman: Nathan Thompson Macon Co., NC marriage bonds: 3 Jul 1831 Elizabeth Thompson and Ute Sherrel bondsman: Andrew Welch (note that Jesse Thompson had married a Rachel Welch in Haywood in 1825). This is Nathan's daughter who appears living in his household in 1840 Macon Co., NC - Elizabeth Sherrill age 64 born Lincoln Co., NC. Any idea who the 14 year old Henry Rader, born Burke Co., NC is in this household in 1840 Macon Co., NC. Is it possibly a grandson? No listing for a Thompson (sometimes also spelled Thomasson) and Sellers marraige in either county, not Burke or Rutherford counties either. Possibly the marriage took place in Buncombe Co (Buncombe still hasn't any marriage bond records available on line, and Buncombe still hasn't published any source material) Or, the bond was damaged or destroyed and didn't survive. Or was by bann instead of bond.
