The New England Historical and Genealogical Register July 1943, pp. 290-294. [The text is full of spelling and grammatical errors. I’ve tried not to add any typos of my own. :-) ] In 1845 John Langdon, living at 6 Eaton Street, in the West End of Boston, Mass., kept a diary, now owned by the New England Historic Genealogical Society. This small book, 4 by 5 3/4 inches in size, bound in boards and labeled "Steward’s Diary for 1845. Published Yearly By Hyman L. Lipman, Stationer & Blank Book Binder, No. 139 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia", contains, on its closing pages, the following account of John Langdon and his family: John Langdon now Being 90 Years & 4 1/2 Mo old Born at Hempsted Queens County State of New York Septr 30th 1754, but now Living in the good City of Boston, Was Maried to Phebe Seaman in Dutches County State of New York in the Year 1778. We have been Blessed with Ten Children, Five Sons and Five Daughters. We lived together nearly Sixty-three Years. My Wife Departed this Life in this Room 6 Mo 10th 1841 Aged Years 80..6..22. Phebe Langdon Born at North Castle in Westchester County State of New York on the 18th November 1760. We where Married in Dutches County about 20 Miles above Poughkeepsie the latter part of the Summer 1778. We were Blessed with Ten Children. Five Sons & 5 Daughters Three eldest born in Ninepartners Dutches County. viz Samll Jones Gerherdus Clowes and Catharine Clowes L. Samuel Jones Langdon our Eldest Son was Born in Dutches County State of New York 1779. and left home the 1st of March 1797 for Europe and was prest on Board a British Man of War. and Retain 15 Year, and now if alive or is the 16th of April 66 age or 66 Year of Age. Catharine Clowes Langdon was Born being our Eldest Daughter on 2nd Mo (February) 15th 1781. Died in New York the first day of the Year 1796 Aged nearly Fifteen Years. Buried in Friends Burying Ground in Liberty Street But was taken up after a Number of Years and again Buried in Friends Burying Ground in the Bowery, as was an infant Mary Langdon Aged about 8 Mo. 3 Gerherdus Clowes Langdon was Born at Ninepartners Dutches County State of New York 2nd Month (February) 12th 1783. Was Married to Amelia Green They had 5 Children 3 Sons and two Daughters. Own’d a No of Houses in Brooklyn 2 of 4 Story, and 2 of 3 do. all of Brick 2 near the Brooklyn ferry and 2 in Willow St. Died 11 Mo (Novr) 30th 1842. Aged 59..9..15 Days. 4 Benjamin Seaman Langon Born on Long Island, Queens County of State of New York. Born 4 Mo (April) 15. 1784. Married Jane Brush Daughter of Judge Jaramiah Brush of Huntington Suffolk County State of New York. They have 2 Children a Son and Daughter left to them, having lost 4 or 5 Children 2 or 3 Grown and 2 Children Young One Daughter about 5 Year Old was Killed by a Carriage running over her in the Street on a 4th July. They now live in New York near the New Ferry at the foot of [Chatham crossed out] Catharine Street. I have Written a Letter this Day, He was 61yr 16 of 4th Mo April 1845 Wrote to him Said B.S. Langdon. 5 Sarah Allison Langdon Born in Huntington County of Suffolk State of New York 9 Mo (Septr) 5th 1785. Married to Captn Wm Thomson on Septr 5, 1807 the Day She was 22 Year Old in New York Died at Brooklyn, 11 Mo (November) 30th 1840 Aged Years 55..2..25 Days Leaving 3 Sons and one Daughter But one of the Sons was lost at Sea in June 1841. The first 5 Children we had Were all Born before their Mother was 25. 6 Phebe Rowland Langdon Born in Queens County and State of New York 7th Mo 15. 1790 Married to Captn Abiathar Young in New York. And Now lives here with her Sister in Boston and her Father, who is Years 90..5..24 days old. 7 Hetty Green Langdon Born in the City of New York, on 2nd Mo (February) 7. 1794. Married to Captn Wm Lithgow in New York in 1817. She has 2 Children a Son and a Daughter Phebe Langdon Lithgow. Who is now Married to Tolman Wiley who Reside in Boston. But her Son Wm Reside in New Orleans in Business. 8 Mary Langdon Born in New York 12th Mo Decr 29th 1795. Died Aged about 9 Mo Buried in Liberty St. then Reintered and Buried in Friends Burying Ground in the Bowery. 9 John Barton Langdon Born 9 Mo (Septr) 9th 1797 in New York. And Died Aged 29 Years nearly. Died in Brooklyn Buried in Friends Part of the 4 Acres Laid off for the Diffrent Societies in the City of Brooklyn near the Navy Yard. 10 Wm Langdon Born at New Town in Seretoga County in State of New York on 12 Mo Dec.r 1800.
