Mary Thomas Seaman would likely have access to the following book about the REYNOLDS in which a mar. to Phoebe Seaman [b.1766] is discussed: Reynolds, Marion Hobart, The History and Descendants of John and Sarah Reynolds, (Brooklyn, N.Y., The Reynolds family association, 1924), 415. SUTTON REYNOLDS of Billings (Beekman Township), Dutchess Co., N. Y., was b. 1765; d. there in 1832, "an old man." We do not know the name of his father, but we believe that Sutton was a grandson of John4 Reynolds (No. 42) who m. Hannah Sutton. John had a son (No. 147) and another grandson named Sutton (No. 359) who lived at Chappaqua, Westchester Co., N. Y.; and the old record published under the biographical sketch of John4 speaks of his son John5 (b. 1734) who lived in Fishkill, Dutchess Co., not so many miles from Billings. John4 also had, among other sons, Joseph and James of whom he knew little. Sutton, we are inclined to believe from the 1790 Census of Beekman Township, was possibly son of Joseph. The four Reynoldses then in Beekman were: SUTTON: himself, 1 male under 16; 4 females of which one was probably his wife. JOSEPH: himself, 1 male over 16; 1 under 16; 4 females; 1 slave. GRIFFIN: himself, 1 male over 16; 4 under 16; 3 females; 1 Indian; 1 slave. Griffin Reynolds was of entirely different descent, as he came of the JAMES OF NORTH KINGSTOWN, R. I., Line; James was probably his brother or father, though he could have been the James (No. 146) in this book. But Joseph and Sutton, we think, were father and son, most probably of the John of Watertown Line. Sutton m. Miss Phoebe Seaman, around or before 1790, who was b. about 1766, daughter of Samuel Seaman. Capt. John Seaman received from Charles I a Colonial grant in 1637 at Hempstead Plains, L. I. His descendants were prominent in the Indian and Revolutionary Wars--twenty-two were in a single L. I. Company in the Revolution. This Captain John Seaman, d. 1694, m. 1: Hannah, dau. Saml. Strickland; m. 2: Martha Moore, descendant of Rev. Christopher Young; had eleven children. Samuel2 Seaman, son of John, m. Phebe Hicks (dau. of Thomas) who was b. 1640, and had Samuel3 who had Samuel4, b. Westchester Co., N. Y.; d. Dutchess Co.; buried Hyde Park in Quaker Cemetery. He m. Freelove (???) and had Phebe, b. about 1766, who m. Sutton Reynolds. An Eliza or Elijah Reynolds of Verbank, Dutchess Co., around 1828, was niece or nephew to Sutton Reynolds, and "cousin to Mary Reynolds Johnson." Egbert B. Johnson, grandson of Sutton, remembered Sutton who d. when Egbert was about eleven. This Sutton Reynolds who m. Phoebe Seaman has often been confused with Sutton Reynolds (No. 147) who m. Anna Carpenter. The latter's record is well known; but of the former we know but little. Sutton and Phoebe had: 1. SUSANNA. 2. ELIZABETH, (Eliza?) 3. CATHERINE, m. James Johnson, about 1818, as first wife. She d. before 1820. 4. MARY, b. Dec. 26, 1793, at Billings, Dutchess Co.; d. Aug. 1867; m. James Johnson, as his second wife, March 13, 1820. He was son of Samuel & Sarah Johnson, probably of Monmouth, N. J. James' father d. when he was quite young, leaving him and twin sister Mary and older brother Joremiah, who m. Catherine Lake. Lived Dutchess Co. James enlisted in War of 1812. He and Mary buried Wash. Hollow, Dutchess Co., N. Y. Mary & James Johnson had: 1. Egbert B., b. May 13, 1821; d. Jany. 1906; m. Cordelia Haight, Nov. 29, 1845. 2. Catherine, m. Reuben van Vlack, Wash, Hollow, had 8 ch. 3. Henry van B., b. Aug. 18, 1827; m. Eunice Sackrider, lived Nyack; had two ch. 5. JOSEPH, b. Sept. 2, 1796; d. April 4, 1869; m. March 1, 1828, Elizabeth McDonald, b. July 25, 1798; d. Sept. 11, 1882. Children: Charlotte V., b. July 27, 1830; m. John P. Berry, 1855, and had Stella. James D., b. Oct. 3, 1838. Joseph lived in Pleasant Valley, Dutchess Co., N. Y.
