Surnames: Seaman, Shaw, Wandell Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/IYGBAIB/507.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Jim, Perhaps you can help me find some info on my great great great grandfather. His name is John Seaman he was born about 1802. He married Melissa Wandell in October 1825 in Newburg, Orange County, New York. They lived in New York and then settled in St. Louis, Missouri by 1860. They were coopers and traveled alot. Melissa died in February 1883 in St. Louis, Missouri. They had eleven children, of whom I have the names of only 5. They are John A., Harim, William Albert (my great great grandfather), Thomas Crosby, and Cornelia. William Albert married Louisa Shaw and raised a family in St. Louis, Missouri. Thomas Crosby married Ellen Margaret Shaw and moved several times until finally settling in Kentucky. Can you help me?

It can't be done via the Historical Society, they say there isn't any information. This is one time a genealogist must make the trip to NY and do his/her own research.(and it will probably take more than a week of researching). There is lots of information and it can't be done overnight. Wish I lived up there. Mary

    3. Eric, Originally, yes, I'll agree with that statement; but, by the 1800's the PA Seamans had started to spread in all four directions. Although chances are those those in Tioga Cty. were from England, I don't think I would make that assumption. I've missed some clues by assuming our PA relatives couldn't be in the North, South, or West. 3. Jack, I take it no one has responded to you previous message. Don't take it that you are being ignored, or that no one cares. Sad to say, Seaman is a name much like Smith, very common and prolific. My ancestral SAEMANNs turn out to have had their name misspelled 250 years ago as SEAMAN, among about 8 other spellings. As if that weren't enough, my gggrandfather decided to change it again so that is was spelled phonetically the way it was pronounced originally: Say Man. There are many, many SEAMAN families in this country; and they came from many different areas overseas: England, Ireland; Sweden; Australia; Prussia; Bavaria...the choice is yours. Sometimes I think it is a miracle that any of us can find our beginnings. I will, in my digging, keep an eye open for Joseph J. Seaman and family and put anything I find on this site. That is the best I can offer. Lucky hunting.
