Angeline Seaman Stubbs died in 1870 in Queens Co. NY. Her children were placed with a guardian that she had designated. I have not established a positive blood link between Angeline Seaman Stubbs and my line, but the families were neighbors and shared friends/contacts. I continue to search! None of the names you listed sound familiar, but I will continue to keep an eye and ear out , as well. Since my John Wesley Seaman married a Seaman, I have a whole knew bunch of trails to follow! 1. [SEAMAN-L] George W. Seaman, Lt. CSA
    2. Marilyn Steber
    3. Listers: I have been looking for "Uncle George" in all the wrong places. George was in the 2nd Kentucky Rifles during the Civil War. His unit ranged along that area where Western Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky meet. They guarded the Salt Works at Saltville. George was with Preston, Cosby and Marshall. Civil War aficionados know about the terrible things that happened in Saltville, and that a guerrilla named Champ Ferguson was alleged to have gone into a hospital there and murdered Negro soldiers as they lay wounded. When Uncle George was captured by the US Colored Infantry in Adams County, Ohio, he was sent to Lexington prison with a letter that called him Notorious Guerrilla. He did appear in court in Lewis County, KY after the War and the cases against him were dismissed. He had ticked off a lot of people in those parts, stealing their horses, etc. so I doubt if he would have stuck around to face being murdered by his fellow Lewis Countians, the majority of whom were Unionists. I just hate to admit that he may have changed his name after the War. That is a cop-out for a family history buff to do when she can't find someone. Unless I start looking for George in all the penitentiaries, I just don't know where else to go. I have looked at every contemporary George W. Seaman in the country, and May have missed a couple in the Far West. So, if anyone finds a George W. Seaman who was born in 1835 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania and moved with his parents to Jackson Co. WV and to Kentucky, please "give a holler." One good thing comes of this search: I am beginning to concentrate on Kentucky Civil War events. One never knows where obsession leads! Marilyn Steber San Diego

    1. Re: [SEAMAN-L] Pennsylvania Seamans
    2. Mary, After I posted my Seaman names I got an email from my aunt. I had asked her to tell me all she could remember about the Seamans. Here is what she said: My grandmother mother's name was, MABEL OZELLA FERGUSON and that she was (she thought) of 11 children. My grandmother ARVILLA MILLICENT SEAMAN, lived in Union City, PA for 11 years. At 11 her father HARRY J. SEAMAN moved with his family to LAREDO (WEBB COUNTY), TEXAS. She had a brother named MELVIN J. SEAMAN. My great grandfather's mother was named HARRIET GRAHAM, and she was born in BUFFALO, NY. My great grandfather was born in NORTH EAST, PA (this is the name of the city not a place) and he had two brothers. One lived in NEW ORLEANS & the other in FLORIDA. She said she would copy all her information and mail it to me. Well she has told me that before and I never got it. She is a very big procrastinator. So we will see. I will give thanks to the thee, O Lord, among the peoples, I will sing praises to thee among the nations. For they steadfast love is great above the heavens, thy faithfulness reaches to the clouds."(RSV)

    2. I have been on this list for awhile but have just been an eavesdropper because I haven't seen much related to my searches. I have some questions now? It seems that alot of the Seamans lived in NY. Does anyone have some Seamans in PA. My great grandfather was named HARRY J. SEAMAN & he married MABLE FERGUSON. They had two children: ARVILLA MILLICENT SEAMAN & MELVIN ? (middle name unknown) SEAMAN. They lived in Erie, PA and in Union City, PA before coming to Texas. They moved to Laredo, Texas when my grandmother ARVILLA was a little girl in elementary school. She was born sometime between 1902- 1904. If anyone has any information on this family I would greatly appreciate it. I know that their is still family in PA but I have no idea who. If I remember correctly my grandmother had several sisters. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cathy Brown Hicks Texas Psalms 108:1-4 "My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast! I will sing and make melody! Awake, O my soul! 3. I have checked out the letter I received in 1998 from the Greater Ridgewood Historical Society. An archivist in the society named George P. Miller had read my inquiry about Stephen Seaman that I had written to the Queens Library. Mr. Miller said that his Society had quite a bit of Seaman material, and that he had checked his "holdings" to see if he could give me more information. No mention of any book source was given. He supplied me with the 4 additional children besides Jackson, Stephen, and Smith, and gave the impression that there had been 10 children born to Stephen and Abby. He also used the 1928 compilation by Mary Thomas Seaman to say that my Stephen must be the man whose lineage was (Isaac, Obadiah, Samuel, Thomas, Capt. John.) He gave no specific proof though of that connection. To further support my Stephen being Isaac's son, he wrote that Isaac had a son named Smith and a daughter named Catherine - Isaac also had a sister named Catherine, and his mother was Deborah Smith. Isaac had a brother Stephen ( who married Martha McCoun in 1759.) Stephen Seaman (1792-1877) apparently named his children after his family, including Thomas, for his g-g-grandfather. Mr. Smith said he could not determine the birthplace of Stephen, but his grandfather was of Hempstead. Isaac was of Hempstead als, but his second wife, Lucretia Mowbrey was of Islip in Suffolk County. I tried to see if the Society had a website where I could verify his sources, but had no luck. Their address is 1820 Flushing Avenue, Ridgewood, NY 11385-1776. Phone # - (718) 456-1776. To answer your question about a published church record for the marriage of Stephen and Abby Ann Nichols....I use as my source the testimonies in the 26 pages of documents I received from Washington, D.C. from Stephen's Pension records. In the documents, Abby Ann was asking for her husband's $8 pension from the War of 1812. She had to produce witnesses to prove she had married Stephen some 61 years earlier, since it was stated there was no church or government record of the marriage. I think I sent you a packet of those documents, Jim, several years ago. If I didn't, I would be glad to send you copies. My scanner isn't working at all, but I could send all the wills I find to you to scan into the Seaman database. I have your address in California somewhere. Being as I am still a novice, could anyone give me tips on what to look for if I visit area cemeteries to photograph Seaman gravestones. Pleasant Valley Presbyterian Church cemetery and Crum Elbow Friend's Meeting House are near where I live. Would the churches have possible burial information that might be helpful, or do I just wander around the cemeteries reading headstones? Kate

    3. I spent a few hours in the Dutchess County Probate record room today. I found Samuel's will and made a few copies of it. Also found a Phoebe Seamans and a Benjamin. Samuel mentions his wife, Abigail, as his executor. Maybe her whole name was Freelove Abigail.....It was written Nov. 9th, 1810. It doesn't mention any children specifically, but asks that his wife "bring up, clothe, and educate his three youngest children." In my Seaman book, it lists Stephen as the youngest, being born in 1782. That would make him 18 yrs. old when Samuel wrote his will. Maybe the youngest at that time were the unnamed sons. This Samuel must have been well connected. His witness is Bartholomew Noxon, which is a huge name around here. Funny, Samuel made a mark for his name....and it was spelled Samuel Simmons. In Phoebe Seamans' will, it mentions a Sutton and a Job (Joseph?). My book shows Phoebe marrying a Sutton Reynolds. Alas, no luck with my Stephen. I think Samuel's son Stephen is the one who lived in Ballston Spa, NY, and not in Glen Cove, where my Stephen lived. Marilyn, send me your address so I can send all three wills to you. If you can tell me which cemetery in Hyde Park Samuel is buried in, I can go find it. Hyde Park is right up the river 10 miles or so. The books at the Dutchess Cty. Probate are in very poor condition. One nearly fell apart as a page was being copied. I jotted down several Seamans from the record book with wills spanning the years 1841-1893. I would be glad to copy them for anyone. Walter - 1841 Robert - 1845 Jacob- no date William - 1864 Richard N. - 1882 William H. - 1883 Job-1885 Egbert C. - 1888 Jacob-1894 Charles-1888 Jacob-1889 Caroline-1893. Hope this will be of help to someone. Kate
