I found reference to the burning at the stake of Seaman, Carman, and Hudson in Fox's Book of Martyrs which I found at the following url: http://ccel.wheaton.edu/foxe/martyrs/begin.htm A search for Thomas Carman Martyr on Google also produced other sources for Fox's Book of Martyrs. I also found a woodcut of the martyrs on the Carman website: http://home.att.net/~carman_family_history/articles/art04.htm I did contact David Henry to obtain a photographic copy of the woodcut (as is mentioned in the above url), but he said he no longer has them available. 2. I had heard that some of the Seamans had been burned at the stake, but did not know a name. Helen Elizabeth Vogt wrote a book on the Descendants of William Seaman of Washington County, PA and NJ and it is mentioned in the book. Since I don't have a copy of the book I don't know exactly what it says, but I think that the LDS can get a copy that you can read. If you have more information on the William Seaman who was burned at the stake I would love to know since my great grandmother was a Seaman. Carol Loar

    2. Thanks to all for your help and especially to Sheila. I think she solved my mystery in more ways than one. I did not know my g-grandfather John Henry SEAMAN had lived in St. Clair, Michigan and never would have thought to look there. All their children were born in Grundy Co, Illinois and then Clare Co, Michigan and him and his wife were buried with some of the children in Midland Co, Michigan. They must have moved sometime between 1910 and 1920 because they were in the 1920 census for Midland Co, Michigan. I certainly will check that out! Secondly, this also proves that this is indeed the right Sophia and Henry LOHMANN and family because her daughter Dorothea Seeman did indeed marry Johannes KNACK and they lived in Minnesota. Henry was suppose to have died in 1906 and I don't see Sophia or Henry Lohmann in the Midland Co Cemetery, so my best bet for them both is still in Will Co, Green Garden Twp, Illinois. Pretoria Maxwell Michigan Sheila wrote: "From my personal notes: Sophia Lohmann died at the home of her son, John H. Seaman at St. Clair, Michigan on 30 October 1911. Services were held October 23 (no place given). She lived prior to her death, with her daughter, Mrs. Knaak at Butterfield, MN and had just been with her son in St. Clair 40 days when she died. (source: Joliet Weekly News - Frankfort column - 2 November 1911). I'm sorry I have no info on Henry. Hope this is of some help. Sheila S-K

    1. [SEAMAN-L] Re: Spouse of Jonathan2
    2. Carolyn M. Seaman
    3. I wish we could finally settle this one. Ardon Seaman in his 1866 genealogy of the descendants of Capt. John gives no name for Jonathan's wife. A copy of the 1698 Hempstead Census which appeared in NYG&B in 1880 was in error when it stated that Jonathan's wife was Jane. The error was corrected in 1914 with a republication of the 1698 Census (also from NYG&B) which clearly states that his wife was Grace. Mary Powell Bunker, in 1895, in her _Long Island Genealogies_ apparently using the erroneous information, gives the name of Jane, as does Mary Thomas Seaman, as you noted. (It is understandable that MPB used the erroneous data but MTS should have rechecked her sources.) According to my records it was George D. A. Combs who stated that the wife of Jonathan Seaman was Grace Jaycox. (Combs was an active genealogist in the 1920's who contributed regularly to NYG&B.) And as an aside, two sons of the original Combs settler in the New World, married two daughters of Capt. Solomon Seaman and Elizabeth Linington, probably making George D. A. Combs another descendant of Capt. John. Maybe this is one error we should "put to bed." From my reading of what we now have, the wife of Jonathan2 was Grace (?Jaycocks).

    3. Listers: Mary Thomas Seaman cited the census list of 1698 when she wrote her book, and lists the wife of Jonathan2 (John 1) as "Jane or Jerie". On the rootsweb.com/nynassa2/census page this family is enumerated page 1 column 2, with Jonathan seman, Grace seman, David seman, Jonathan, John, Elizabeth, Grace, Caleb, Joseph, Hannah, Sarah. Is there another document that has the wife of Jonathan mentioned? Can it be that Grace was written in such a way that it might be read as Jane, or, vice versa? Marilyn

Frederick later married Kathering Graef, William was already married to Amanda Johnson, John later married Katharina Sundheim and Bertha later married William Quinn. Along with the family is shown a 2nd Charles Seaman, son of William and Amanda, who was born in 1899 but died in 1900, shortly after the 1900 Census was taken. Baptism records from First Immanual Lutheran Church, Ashland Ave. Chicago, IL show the family as surnamed SIEMON, however it comes down as SEAMAN through descendants. William and Amanda nee Johnson Seaman were my grandparents; having sired Mildred Seaman in 1901 and Evelyn Seaman (my mother) in 1905. Amanda died in 1910 giving birth to another child, Amanda, who also died shortly thereafter. Evelyn Seaman married Fred R. Busse on 11/21/1928. I am their only child. Both are deceased. Charles the elder was son of Johann Siemon (1806-1886) and Charlotte Siemon (1807-1893) who's maiden name is unknown. I'm sure both immigrated from Germany sometime during the 19th century. In 1910 Charles & Minnie are shown living at 1545 S. Homan Ave. William still resides with them along with his daughters Mildred & Evelyn and Amanda (who has not yet succomed). Also residing at that residence is Elsie Seaman, daughter of Fred Seaman, who died in 1907. There is no indication of her mother, Katherine Graef. I am interested in anything one can find on the Graef's, the Sundheim's or, especially, the history of Johann and Charlotte Siemon. Also on what Charles' wife Minnie's surname would be. I have been unable to locate anything through online investigation. Other surnames that come up in baptismal records are Drews and Wolf. Other names beyond those listed above are Wilhelmine Drews, Caroline Wolf, Ferdinand Siemon, Louise Johnson and Johann Sundheim. There is also baptismal information re. Ethel Siemon, daughter of Friedrich Siemon and Caroline Wolf, however I do not believe this Friedrich is my Frederick. Any assistance anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated. I'm at a blind end. Thanks, Jim Busse

    3. Perhaps someone can help with this. I have a loose piece of paper here with no indication where it came from. Perhaps someone can tell me the book source and supply me with the data from the pages I do not have. The page I have has a page number "380" at the top, then it lists 4 unrelated marriages. Then there is a paragraph header that says "The Seaman Family". The first paragraph starts out saying "The Seaman and some other families of which it is proper I should write, do not belong to Egg Harbor, they having first settled in Ocean county ..." It then goes on to speak of Joseph SEAMAN who came to Long Island from West Creek and of his building on land that belonged to someone else (Bartlett)and of Joseph's son Benjamin. I have only a photocopy of this page & nothing following although the written piece carries on. Can anyone help me figure this out? Terry ===== Terry Wilson 40 S. 3. You data and mine match on the ancestors and descendants of Phoebe Seaman; however, I'm reading the letter a little differently that you have. . . . Phebe Seaman[.] Sarah Colwell['s] Father was her [Phebe's] Brother. Sarah [Seaman Colwell] had three Brothers. . . Following this train of thought, Phoebe Seaman Reynolds had the following siblings: Samuel C. Seaman b. 1 Nov 1756, Poughkeepsie Albert Seaman b 1762, Poughkeepsie Andrew Seaman, b. 1764 Benjamin Seaman b. Dec 28 1776 Stephen Seaman, b 10 Feb 1782 Henry Seaman Of these brothers, the only one who had a daughter named Sarah for whom I do not have solid marriage information is Samuel. I think she may be the Sarah Seaman who m. a Colwell. It looks like his name was "Arche". My reading of the letter is prompted primarily by the fact that the author does not use possessives anywhere in the letter. (See . . .Bert Oldest Girl Death. . . which should read Bert's oldest girl's death) Now a question: I only have the name "Freelove" for Phoebe's mother. Do you know who Samuel Seaman's wife, the mother of Phebe and all the sons, was? Please let me know if this helps. 3. The Nathaniel/Sarah Powell Seaman parentage has been suggested often but I have never found any documentation for it. To the purists, William Seaman stands as an orphan without any parents. But the suggestion, first proposed by Ardon Seaman in 1866, that William Seaman, son of Nathaniel, "went to Pennsylvania" seems to fit with the William Seaman who m. Amy Disbrow. I have also never found any information on her. Should you discover any new data, please let us all know.
