Hi, I found my Seaman family in the 1880 US Census living in Oyster Bay, Queens, NYC: STEPHEN SEAMAN age 34, wife MARY EMMA SEAMAN age 29 and daughter MARGARETTA age 7. That would mean that Stephen was born abt. 1845/46. I know that my g/grandmother Margaretta had a younger sister named Ada. Margaretta married William Fling and resided in Glen Cove, Long Island NY. Her 1st husband was Edward Blake. She lived to be 101. I have not been able to fine out for sure who Stephen's or his wife Mary Emma's parents were. Can anyone help me? Thank you, Sharon Carter
Hello Marty, Carolyn and List: I know this is not who you are looking for, but I have a Susan Seaman b. 1784-1784 (unknown parents) married Solomon Gibson abt 1800-1810. They were in Washington Twp 1820, but then they disappeared. They had at least 7 children. One of whom was Mary Elizabeth b 1817 in Poughkeepsie. One child was male, the rest all female. Mary Elizabeth went to live in Wayne and Ontario Counties when she married Rensselaer Cobb and raise a family. Perhaps this Susan was a relative of your William? Did William stay in Dutchess Co.? Was he Quaker? Johnna St Clair > Marty, > > This is all I have on this couple. Wish I had more. > > "William H. (Perhaps Capt. John Seaman himself?). There is an entire branch of Seamans on the tiny Island of Dominica in the central Caribbean. Of which I am a member. As the family story goes, our patriarch was a sailor of some sort who came to the island and started a family there, but left after some time. There is no time frame to the story , but I believe it could have been Capt. John. Incidentally, John is also my father's name.... Yet another John Seaman. :) Any connection to the rest of the family would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Shannon
Hello, All. Let me throw another monkey wrench into things. Many of the Seamans in the New England States came over directly from England, as did many of those that settled in New York. Some of the New England Seamans went to PA when that territory started to open up, but there were Seamans from Germany there as well. The German families settled mostly in Berks County, which later was partly given over to Northumberland and Lehigh Counties. Some PA Seamans moved on to Ohio and other states as they opened up. And along the way, there are a variety of surname spellings attributed to them all. The original German name was SAEMANN. I have also found SAEMAN, SAHMAN, SEHMANN, SEHMAN, SAMANN, SAMAN, SEEMANN, SEEMAN, and SAYMAN. Mary
We are holding a SEAMAN family reunion in Shelby, Ohio on Sunday, August 31 at noon. All are descendants of James Grummon SEAMAN, Sr (early-mid 1800s) NY/MI and most are in the line from his grandson Samuel Silas SEAMAN in Ohio. Did any of your Seaman family move to Vermont in late 1700's or early 1800's????????? I have a Lucy A Seaman born in 1827 in Barre Vt. Both parents are supposed to have been born in NY. Pat
Pat, hello. I have been researching a very specific branch of the Seaman family in a very specific date range. Unfortunately, I can not help you because all the research I've been doing is in New York about 1830-1860. Lucy A. Seaman does not ring a bell, but then agan I'm not as in depth as some of the people out there. YOu could try contacting Jim Rubbins. I did not find him to be very polite, but he does have a great deal more information than I do. Good luck in your search. Hello. Perhaps this will help unravel the mystery. My ggGrandfather's name was Benjamin Jonathan Lewis Seaman (no relation to those from New England). Many of his ancestors were named Johann (John) Ludwig (Lewis), Johann being their christening name, and Ludwig being their first name. Each man was then often given a middle name as well. As time went on, the christening name was used as the second name in public life to help stop all the confusion of so many men having the same name. So perhaps your ancestor was christened John (after St. John) Robert Charles Seaman, or even John Charles Robert Seaman. He could have used a different name or sequence depending on with whom he was speaking. Hope this didn't add to the confusion. ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Friday, June 06, 2003 7:26 AM Subject: [SEAMAN-L] Re: Seaman from Norfolk, England This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I have found everyone on the 1881 and 1901 census - my problem is that for some reason even though the father was a policeman none of the children's births seem to have been registered, Parish records do not seem to be there either, In the census the father's name changes from Charles in 1851 to John on a wedding certificate to Robert on the 1881 census to Charles on the death certificate! I am trying to find the mothers maiden name and marriage of Maria to Charles//Robert/John Seaman.

We are still searching for any information about Ann Eliza Seaman. She was born about 1817 in Ohio and possibly had a sister named Hester (I suspect her mother was named Hester, too). She married Daniel Mason in Logan Co. OH in 1835. They had children: James Tipton, Clorinda and Hester (AKA Esther) Mason. They lived in Logan Co. OH until about 1855; then by the 1860 census, Ann Eliza was living in Tipton, Iowa with no sign of her husband Daniel. She died in Salem, OR in 1900. We know that she was related to Smith, Levi, J.H. and George Seaman, all of Logan Co. OH but we are not sure exactly how. Anyone out there know of any connections with this family? We have photos of some of these family members, but they are not specifically identified. We would love to share our information on this family with others who are researching them! Bob & Nancy Noble
