    3. Bob, In my previous posting I inadvertently omitted several of Wilson and Nancy Seaman's daughters, i.e., Prudence, b. ca. 1834 in Clinton Co., OH, and Mary, b. ca. 1840, Clinton Co., OH. One of Wm. D. and Nancy Seaman's neighbors in 1840 in Union Twp., Clinton Co., OH, was Reece Gaddis, obviously the namesake of Wm's son Reece Gaddis Seaman. [1840 US Census of Union Twp., Clinton Co., OH, p. 297] I suspect that this family "may" somehow be related to the family of Dr. Valentine Seaman, a prominent physician and surgeon of New York City, & President of the Medical Society which was the forerunner of the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons. From Shrady, John, Dr. "Contributions to the Medical History of the City of New York": "Dr. Valentine Seaman was born in Queens County, Long Island, April 2, 1770, his father being Willet Seaman and his mother Mary Searing, also of the same county, both of whom were of Quaker parentage. Near the close of the Revolutionary War Valentine's father went to New York and established himself as a merchant and offered many inducements to his son to join him in business, but medicine had more allurements and Dr. Benjamin Rush of Philadelphia gained a pupil." "After his graduation Dr. Valentine returned to this city and married Anna Ferris in 1794, by whom he had eleven children." "The first white child vaccinated for smallpox in New York was his own son, he having lost his first child by small pox . He was induced to visit Jenner, the result of which was that the two became fast friends throughout their lives." According to my records, Valentine Seaman had, among others, a son named James Valentine Seaman (James V. Seaman). Possibly he is the namesake of Wm. D. Seaman's son, James V[alentine?]. Seaman, who later became a physician in Iowa. I would be interested in anything further that you may discover about this family in the future. Regards, John M. 2. Sorry.... There are a whole lot of "SEAMAN" surnames in Ohio starting around 1825 with the opening of the Erie Canal. Being born in 1810 would have meant that they probably came west on horseback. Looking for land records might help you locate the family in a particular county. 1. Re: [SEAMAN] Re: Sylvanus Seaman/Seamans/Simmons
    2. Anita, have you tried searching Long Island, NY for info on your Seamans? This goes back several centuries earlier, but there is a Sylvanus Seaman of Hempstead, LI, who was one of ten children of Mary and Thomas Seaman. Thomas was the son of Captain John Seaman by his second wife Martha More/Moore. (From the book Descendants of Capt. John Seaman of Hempstead, Long Island, NY according to Mary Thomas Seaman) I mention this because of the English naming patterns, which were continued for generations. If you can get back a few more generations, try longislandgenealogy.com Type in Seaman, and you'll get some hits. Try J Rubins' site link there too. I have found several Sylvanus Motts, one dying in Freeport L.I. between 1900 and 1906. My John Mott married Sarah Seaman in 1688. There was so much inter-marrying on Long Island, that it might be worth a try. Even if you don't make aconnection yet, it is interesting reading! Good luck, Paula

If you contact the Owen Sound Public Library ( their website is www.owensound.library.on.ca), they have researchers who will give you more local information. I think Collingwood is actually not in Grey Twp. Collingwood also has a website and you can click right into the library website. Hope this helps
