    1. Seaman and Gibson families of Poughkeepsie and Palmyra, NY
    2. Johnna St Clair
    3. Hi Lists: I apollogize in advance for this very long winded posting - I would like to ask for advice regarding researching Seaman families in and around Poughkeepsie. I am having a very hard time finding anything on my Solomon GIBSON who supposedly married (about 1810) Susan SEAMAN (aka Mariah ?). Solomon is found in 1810, 1820 and 1840 in Washington Township, Dutchess County. In 1830 he is in Sandford, Broome County and then moves to Ohio about 1847. I have these hints but no proof that their child, my 3rd great grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Gibson was born in Poughkeepsie in 1817. Also no proof, only hints that Mary Elizabeth's brother, Edward Emmet Gibson was born in Hyde Park in 1833. The LDS IGI says that Mary Elizabeth was married to RW Cobb in 1836 in Palmyra, Wayne County, NY. I have not found this marriage document, however. RW Cobb's parents ran a fulling and carding works on the banks of the Genesee River in Ontario County. During approximately the same time period this Seaman family was in the woolen goods trade. Perhaps RW Cobb met ME Gibson during a business transaction? Albert Seaman (born in Poughkeepsie), his wife Elizabeth, their son Leonard L. Seaman, his wife Mahala and grandson Seneca L. Seaman are all buried in the same cemetery as Mary Elizabeth Gibson and her husband. The Palmyra Vienna Street Cemetery in Palmyra, Wayne County, NY. I am thinking that perhaps Mary Elizabeth Gibson was a neice of Leonard L. Seaman. She had a brother named Albert and a brother named Lewis Leonard. Lewis Leonard had a son named Lewis S. Gibson. Another intersting thing that came up in my searching is that Leonard L. Seaman lived in the Cullen Rogers house during the 1840's. Mary Elizabeth Gibson Cobb named her 4th child Cullen Rogers Cobb b. July 40 1843. I have several questions: What was the religion of this Seaman family? Where can baptism and marriage records be found? Why did they move to Palmyra? Did Quaker converts commonly change their names? Can anyone suggest sources to look for info on them? Such as books of records which might be either online or in print? Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions, Johnna St Clair

    2. Dear Seaman Researchers, Copied from Dick Eastman's online newsletter: Enjoy Free Access to NEHGS' Register Online The following is an announcement from the New England Historic Genealogical Society: NEHGS is pleased to offer free access to its New England Historical and Genealogical Register database on NewEnglandAncestors.org over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend! Normally only available to NEHGS members, the Register database will be accessible to everyone from Thursday, November 25 through Sunday, November 28, 2004. We encourage all NEHGS members to spread the word about this offering, and we hope that those of you who are not members find a veritable feast of ancestors in the Register database! Published quarterly since 1847, The New England Historical and Genealogical Register is the flagship journal of American genealogy and the oldest journal in the field. The online database includes issues from 1847 to 1994. The Register has featured articles on a wide variety of topics since its inception, including vital records, church records, tax records, land and probate records, cemetery transcriptions, obituaries, and historical essays. Authoritative compiled genealogies have been the centerpiece of the Register for more than 150 years. Thousands of New England families have been treated in the pages of the journal and many more are referenced in incidental ways throughout. The articles in the Register range from short pieces correcting errors in print or solving unusual problems to larger treatments that reveal family origins or present multiple generations of a family. Look for details on how to obtain free access to the Register in a special eNews bulletin to be sent out Wednesday, November 24. A link will also be available on that date on the home page of our website, www.NewEnglandAncestors.org. Posted by Dick Eastman on November 20, 2004 at 06:00 AM Thanks, Dick, for the info! Surnames: Seaman & Langdon Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IYGBAIB/598 Message Board Post: According to John Langdon's journal, he married Phebe Seaman the summer of 1778 in Nine Partners, Dutchess County, NY. John was born in Hempstead, Long Island, where he was preceded by three or four generations of Langdon's. His journal states that Phebe's parents were Charles and Hester Seaman. Several of John and Phebe's children predeceased them and were buried in Quaker cemeteries, so, presumably, they were a Quaker family, but I find no indication that either John's fraternal or maternal ancestors were Quaker. Hence, I presume that Phebe's family were Quaker; however, even with the assistance of the head librarian at Earlham College, I could find no trace of these Seaman's or the Seaman-Langdon's in Quaker records. It was suggested that perhaps they were Hicksite Quakers. At any rate, does anyone have a Charles and Hester Seaman in their lines who were in and or around North Castle, Westchester, NY, around 18 Nov 1760 who could have been Phebe's parents? Is there an! y chance Phebe and her father, Charles, were descendants of Captain John Seaman's Quaker lines? I'd appreciare any thoughts/help. Regards, Ed Rockstein 4G grandson of John & Phebe

    3. What all do you know about the LINN, GADDIS & SEAMAN families? In VERY preliminary analysis I find they are probably related to a John SEAMAN who resided in VA and PA. I think they were originally Quakers from NY. I believe that the aforementioned Wilson D. SEAMAN is also somehow related to these families. Does anybody know if there was a relationship between the Seamans and Gaddis' family at that time other than living next door. This is why I ask. I have Rees GADDIS b 1755 Frederick, Virginia m unknown and d aft 1840 in Campbell County, KY his sons: Rees GADDIS abt 1780 m Louisa SMITH in Kentucky (had son Rees GADDIS b abt 1800) John GADDIS abt 1781 d 1807 m Abigail SEAMAN dau of John SEAMAN(John SEAMAN was a native of Virginia was supposedly of "Welsh" descent and was an early settler of Cincinnati) and had son Rees GADDIS, my ancestor, b 26 Sep 1807 nr Xenia, Greene County, Ohio d 26 Mar 1891 Colfax, McLean County, IL and m Martha Ann BENNETT. We can find no further information on Abigail SEAMAN or her Father, John so any help would be appreciated. The BENNETTS, DILLONS, and FISHERS who intermarried in this family all came from Clinton County, Ohio and were there at this time migrating later to McLean and Tazewell County, IL. Any help would be appreciated! Marianne ++++++++++++++++++ Bob, In my previous posting I inadvertently omitted several of Wilson and Nancy Seaman's daughters, i.e., Prudence, b. ca. 1834 in Clinton Co., OH, and Mary, b. ca. 1840, Clinton Co., OH. One of Wm. D. and Nancy Seaman's neighbors in 1840 in Union Twp., Clinton Co., OH, was Reece Gaddis, obviously the namesake of Wm's son Reece Gaddis Seaman.
